Labour won't back Tory pledge to protect single-sex spaces

Apparently women already have enough protection. Try telling that to the women who were left to deal with man in the women's loos in my local M&S the other day. He wouldn't leave until one of them phoned the police. There needs to be an absolutely clear 'no men in women's single-sex spaces' law. Any grey area leaves predatory men space to manouevre.

Women have suffered due to Tory policies for many years. Have you been in a prison recently ( and I’m not talking about the presence of trans women there) ?
Have you heard of cuts to benefits ? It’s becoming increasingly difficult to get pip. Have you seen the state of maternity services ? Women killed by men because of not enough policemen. Surestarts shut as well as libraries. I’d agree with you if everything was fecking hunky dory but it isn’t.

This is why so many people, including me, feel politically homeless. Of course we don't want the revolting Tory policies to continue to destroy our country- but how can we vote for a party which is determined to put the demands of the TRA lobby in place of the rights of women?

This absolutely.

Rosaluxemberg · 03/06/2024 15:11

@justasking111 get a star. How brave of you,

Rosaluxemberg · 03/06/2024 15:14

You clearly give not a shit about women. A huge number of women have been affected by Tory policies and austerity. Your own daughters are unable to live abroad, work abroad, because of Tory Brexit. Can’t afford to buy a home. Your own grand daughter could die because of horrendous maternity care. But hey tories know what a privileged wealthy woman is.

I've been working in a Cat A male prison recently. Is that good enough for you?

Mr Healey told Times Radio: “We will not want to amend the Act, it’s not needed. The Act, incidentally, was a Labour Act in 2010, that was opposed by the Tories, but it already provides protections for single-sex spaces for biological women.“It already provides a definition of a woman, and sex and gender are different.

Well in that case a Labour government isn't needed either then.

Just as service providers are allowed to provide truly single sex services but tend to choose not to, billionaires are allowed to pay extra tax to fund public services, or help people out of poverty, but tend to choose not to. Apparently someone being allowed to offer you the thing you really need is enough now.

Maddy70 · 03/06/2024 15:24

Because its unworkable and its already protected in law. Who is going to be checking genitals at a changing room?

There should be safe spaces for everyone

@BackToLurk and conditions are A1 there then ? And the criminal justice system is functioning well ? What happens if a loved one is attacked by a prisoner released early because of Tory inability to build more prisons ? Provide rehabilitation?

Sorciere1 · 03/06/2024 15:29

Labour is able to secure women's rights and do the above.
But they don't want to

RebelliousCow · 03/06/2024 15:40

Rosaluxemberg · 03/06/2024 15:05

That’s not what’s happening though ?

Yes it is!

It further embeds the concept of 'gender identity'; muddles the difference between sex and gender; and will further create a climate in which same sex attracted children or those on the autistic spectrum will be led to believe they are " in the wrong body".

I guess most GC women are wealthy or healthy enough to not need NHS care. Talk about fiddling whilst Rome is burning.

Don't be ridiculous!

Different types of issue can be important at the same time.

Plus, you're going to be very disappointed when Labour is unable to transform everything in the way you are hoping they will.

No. They are fucking awful. Which is why I advocate for fixing male violence in prison rather than placing males in women's prisons. There are many categories of vulnerable male prisoner, not just ones with a trans identity. The whole system needs overhauling.

There is one line on prisons on Labour's website. in relation to building prisons, but it's only 2 years since they were talking about halting the prison building programme. We'll see if they come out with more, but frankly I'm not sure any political party gives a flying fuck about prisons.

I'd like to see Labour committing to the clarification that sex in the Equality Act means biological sex. I don't think that's a massive ask. If they can't do that, I'm unconvinced about how much they care about women tbh.

That is what single sex spaces are for women. 'Third' spaces are what is required for those that don't 'identify' with their sex.

I guess most GC women are wealthy or healthy enough to not need NHS care. Talk about fiddling whilst Rome is burning.

And nurses were also up in arms about being compelled to share changing facilities with a male. Those nurses voices count too. And the severely disabled women that can't be certain what a 'same-sex' carer means in practice, a carer who will be providing intimate care, those women count. If they are wealthy they can buy far more autonomy.

RebelliousCow · 03/06/2024 15:46

Labour is going to have to be publicly answerable to their claim that biological sex is already protected in the law - when the inevitable cases start to come through. They are just making everything more painful that it need be for themselves.

Oh do one with your tedious whinging about 'checking genitals'.

We managed to have women only facilities for decades without genitals being checked.

I don't get the whataboutery of arguing that because other things also need attention we shouldnt care about women's rights?

Are these posters also on other forums haranguing men who are considering holding their nose and voting Tory?

Or just here to scold women?

(Edited for clarity)

Or Tory. Useless fuckers. I'm so angry they haven't sorted this out over 14 years. They don't get a fourth chance.

I guess most GC women are wealthy or healthy enough to not need NHS care. Talk about fiddling whilst Rome is burning.

You don't seem to have bothered to read the article. It concerns NHS Wales, health is devolved, and Labour has always been in government in Wales. The dire straits of the health services in Wales are 100% due to a Labour government who have been in power since devolution!

The truth that our Welsh Labour run NHS consistently scores below the evil Tory run English NHS on all targets. The Welsh government had millions to spare to lower the speed limit to 20mph (and to move it back to 30mph in all the places where, as predicted, it caused delays and extra pollution), but didn't prioritise finding the money to set up a few more care homes, so that hospitals could discharge all the poor buggers who are not well enough to look after themselves, but no longer need round the clock medical supervision.

Wasn't it the Labour government under Blair who brought in all those PFI contracts that are still draining the resources of our health boards, and lining the pockets of Labour cronies in the private sector?

So don't try and kid us that anything will change when Labour get into power. They have no intention of getting rid of the despicable 2 child benefit limit, or protecting the disabled from the cruelties of the DWP benefit denial factories. All they are going to do is make it so that disabled old women like myself who request same sex intimate care get massive blokes in wigs turning up demanding I let them wash my nether regions, because it validates their identity. Fuck that!

Do you wanted it sorted out?

Labour have already responded. No change on this. So that’s the mandate you’ll give them.
