Labour won't back Tory pledge to protect single-sex spaces

Apparently women already have enough protection. Try telling that to the women who were left to deal with man in the women's loos in my local M&S the other day. He wouldn't leave until one of them phoned the police. There needs to be an absolutely clear 'no men in women's single-sex spaces' law. Any grey area leaves predatory men space to manouevre.

Labour won’t change the legal framework which has got us into this mess

I’m not surprised though as they prefer gender ideology and to defend the GRA which was theirs

ArabellaScott · 03/06/2024 11:19

'no men in women's single-sex spaces'

Absolutely agree.

The time is now, Keir. Do you choose to prioritise males with genderfeels, or do you prioritise women and girls?

You have to make a choice.

OldCrone · 03/06/2024 11:25

Mr Healey told Times Radio: “We will not want to amend the Act, it’s not needed. The Act, incidentally, was a Labour Act in 2010, that was opposed by the Tories, but it already provides protections for single-sex spaces for biological women.“It already provides a definition of a woman, and sex and gender are different.

The definition of a woman in the EA2010 is "a female of any age". is a man with a falsified birth certificate which states he is female considered to be "a female of any age"?

The Gender Recognition Act doesn't make it clear that sex and gender are different. It says:

(1)Where a full gender recognition certificate is issued to a person, the person’s gender becomes for all purposes the acquired gender (so that, if the acquired gender is the male gender, the person’s sex becomes that of a man and, if it is the female gender, the person’s sex becomes that of a woman).

This is why more clarity is needed.

Cosmosforbreakfast · 03/06/2024 11:36

Of course they won't, they hate women. They've proved this over and over again. They're quite happy to put women and children in all kinds of danger, they've proved this over and over again too. An election used to be picking the best of the worst, can't even do this now, they're all coming up with more and more batshit crazy ideas.

Chersfrozenface · 03/06/2024 11:39

Well that's the problem, isn't it? In the GRA 'gender' is synonymous with 'sex', they don't have different meanings. In fact, generally at the time they didn't, hence the "gender pay gap" which was most definitely about the difference in pay rates for the two sexes

In the Equality Act 2010 those who have obtained a GRC are called "transexuals", i.e. people who have changed sex.

The law needs more than clarifying, it needs to be amended.

Abeona · 03/06/2024 11:44

That's the kind of thing I was thinking of, OldCrone. I once asked a transwoman whether he had a GRC when he was trying to get into a lesbian-only event and he went into a 'You have no right to ask me whether I have a GRC, I know my rights' meltdown. And as the other women on the door that night pointed out, even if he had given us some kind of official-looking document or whatever, we'd have had no idea whether it was genuine or not.

I've lost count of the number of once-regular, community-creating women's and lesbian events that no longer go on because women have said 'No, no men, no entry' and have then been involved in frightening, morale-sapping arguments with men determined to invade women's space, often accompanied by threats.

Point of detail: Kemi/Sunak say their plan includes making this a reserved matter. As in: Scotland could NOT attempt this by the back door again. It would be firmly shut.

This is an important point of detail IMO. We have to assume they're against all of it because they are wedded to self-ID as Dodds' policy position tells us.

But that is a key element that they probably loathe as it would mean no future UK government could meekly stand back and go "oh but it wasn't our decision" <slopes shoulders>

And the Tory’s have let what you’ve said, go on for years! They could have clarified this Act ages ago. They’ve decided to use it as a wedge issue at the election and it’s massively backfired. The minister this morning was so poor in all of her interviews, the public will be left more confused than before.

Do you prefer Labour’s gender ideology- the GP Self ID and no change to the EqA so businesses fear litigation and TRAs have more power?

So we just vote Labour and let this shit run on and on for another five years of Starmer and co keeping the current situation going by allowing Rosie Duffield to say one thing and Annaliese Dodds to say the opposite and Starmer in the middle wringing his hands and talking about toxicity on both sides? And meanwhile men go on committing crimes and being referred to as female, women have to phone the police to get creepy men to vacate the women's loos, women's and lesbian events go even further underground in order to avoid being protested by ranks of far-left Labour men...

...women have to phone the police to get creepy men to vacate the women's loos,..

Provided they're not arrested by those very police for telling a man to leave the women's toilet and refusing to apologise to the man when the police said they had to. Cardiff, October 2022

Fortunately for them, the man left when the police call handler answered. M&S staff thanked the women involved and said they weren't empowered to intervene because of company policy. Whether that is true or not, they clearly didn't feel that they could turf him out.

Yet here we are with Tories saying they'll do something, labour saying nothing needs doing.

Who to vote for , hmmmmm

Swinney angry about this part of the Tories' idea

Fuming at Sunak for saving this up his sleeve for election points instead of getting on with it 6 months ago. Now women's rights are being weaponised in a dirty campaign. I am so sick of them.

AstonScrapingsNameChange · 03/06/2024 14:34

Unfortunately politics is always dirty and keeping one's powder dry is sensible in the run up to an election.

Not helpful to the debate nor indicative of good character though but they're playing to win, not to get a badge for being the nice guys.

Unfortunately it's what our political system rewards.

Did they leave when the police arrived?
In the M&S situation, I can't see any law would have made any difference, it sounds like the bloke left when the police arrived.

What will you do, vote for the party that doesn’t want this change?

It’ll give them mandate to do their version wrt gender ideology, make it easier etc

So is Healey unaware of the Haldane ruling, or is he lying?

I hope Healey reads the Michael Foran series of tweets linked to in the other thread about this.

Just Vote Tory and own it.
Why so much frothing about it ? Just be careful what you wish for if you are’t especially well off, disabled, dependent on public services. It’s a niche topic for many who are comfortably well off, they can afford to be dogmatic about it.

This is why so many people, including me, feel politically homeless. Of course we don't want the revolting Tory policies to continue to destroy our country- but how can we vote for a party which is determined to put the demands of the TRA lobby in place of the rights of women?

Rosaluxemberg · 03/06/2024 15:05

That’s not what’s happening though ?

It's the most vulnerable women who are exposed to the erosion of single-sex spaces and services. Female inmates, women in refuges, homeless women. Wealthy women can opt out of public services. You don't care if their are men in women's wards if you can just go private have your own room.

Cantalever · 03/06/2024 15:09

What happened to "If You Want my X, Respect my Sex"?
Labour (and Lib Dems) need to listen up.

Its beyond me why they put 52% of potential votes at risk. Women are unimportant, aren't they?

justasking111 · 03/06/2024 15:10

Keir doesn't know what a woman is. I'm in Wales we have to suck it up because our police can't figure it out due to Welsh government policies.

I'm not voting labour.
