So The Women Who Wouldn't Wheesht book is out tomorrow (I have pre-ordered) and The Times today includes an extract from JK's chapter in which she lays out with searing honesty why she decided to speak out about the issue, and how the subsequent online monstering felt.

I don't know how to paste a paywall free link but this is the actual one: https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/jk-rowling-stand-up-women-trans-book-r6jlglpvq

I raised a wry smile at this part:

"People who’d worked with me rushed to distance themselves from me or to add their public condemnation of my blasphemous views (though I should add that many former and current colleagues have been staunchly supportive). In truth, the condemnation of certain individuals was far less surprising to me than the fact that some of them then emailed me, or sent messages through third parties, to check that we were still friends."

Can't help but wonder if it's Radcliff or Watson she's referring to here!

Who else has the book on pre-order and what are we looking forward to most about it?

JK Rowling: Why I decided to stand up for women

In exclusive extracts from a new book The Women Who Wouldn’t Wheesht, the Harry Potter author, a broken-hearted mother and a former prison governor tell the inside story of their fight for rights

Amazon is currently giving 1-2 months delivery time :-( might have to get it on Kindle.

They were down to three copies earlier, so obviously totally out of stock. Waterstones maybe? Although I can't imagine it will take that long to get another batch to Amazon surely!

WeMeetInFairIthilien · 30/05/2024 23:09

My eyes are leaking.

I'm wobbling between admiration for the women within, horror at their witness and sheer bloody RAGE.

I'm as southern as they come, and would hate to appropriate, but I won't shut up either.

Boiledbeetle · 30/05/2024 23:23

Currently No 1 in two kindle departments

Mine should be arriving today. That's the weekend's reading sorted! Then my brother wants to borrow it. He's gay, and in the past few years has gone from full-on pro trans/the T belongs to the LGB to full on male terf as it's become painfully obvious how much the T takes from his rights and his visibility. I like to think I've had a good influence!

Has he read Gay Shame by Gareth Roberts? That’s one on my next to read list. It covers the hijacking of the gay rights movement by the trans ideology and of course the erosion of what it means to be homosexual by some very well recognised big organisations and charities like Stonewall.

DworkinWasRight · 31/05/2024 07:41

Gay Shame is a terrific read. Roberts is a very entertaining writer.

There were 2 one star reviews when I placed my order earlier today. Of course neither were written by verified purchasers.

Nineteendozen · 04/06/2024 14:30

I have just cancelled my pre order of the audio book as the delivery date is now 13th June.
I just bought the hardback from Waterstones so I am looking forward to reading it this evening!

"The mirror world framing — whereby women’s compassion for other women is positioned as hatred for the marginalised, while “progressive” men’s hatred for feminists is positioned as “protecting trans kids” — is as insulting as it is ridiculous. "

truth!

Victoria Smith in the Critic on TWWWW, Sexed (by Suzanna Rustin) and the tranderers who claim to be feminists

https://thecritic.co.uk/this-is-what-feminism-looks-like/

I wish I had Victoria’s gift for getting straight to the nub of the issue and explaining it so clearly - she’s an excellent thinker and writer.

I'm just waiting on Zoom for the book launch event to start, apparently it's taking ages to get everyone in. Even though T*rfs are just three Russian bots hiding in a raincoat, right?

I'm waiting too. Apparently nearly 1,000 people have signed up. We must all be Russian bots.

Finally started

RobinEllacotStrike · 05/06/2024 18:47

wow that was powerful from Jenny!

YourPithyLilacSheep · 05/06/2024 18:49

Oh I was just coming on here to see who else is in the FiLIA webinar launch! That was an amazing piece that Jenny read. Just amazing.

Boiledbeetle · 05/06/2024 19:30

Really enjoyed that!

MinorDisaster · 05/06/2024 19:32

It was brilliant. If any of the women who were speaking tonight, or who wrote pieces for the book, or who organised the webinar behind the scenes, are reading this, thank you so much.

Waitwhat23 · 05/06/2024 19:45

I was a sobbing mess during Jenny's readings. The whole event was brilliant.

Waitwhat23 · 05/06/2024 20:01

And, from my notes (because I'm like that) -

It was powerful from Susan at the beginning when she said that the women at the very beginning of all this assumed that the decision makers just hadn't realised certain consequences and all that was needed was to point out the obvious and then the sense of betrayal when those decision makers simply refused to listen.

About women having less optimism in politics in general.

From Magi's poem, I loved hearing her speaking the alliteration of 'hate filled harridans'

Women's spoken words being even more powerful than reading them written down and how emotional the whole webinar was.

'Act upon our rights as is and not as if they have already been lost'.

New books mentioned which I'll add to my wish list.

Pam Gosal's comment about our Parliament being unable to cope with opposing views.

And of course, from JKR's message -

'Truly, we are the witches they can't burn.'

The whole event was inspiring.

TheaBrandt · 05/06/2024 20:06

Is there anyway to watch this online?
