"Awful," Martina Navratilova fumes after trans athlete wins a women’s race while other participants gracefully accept it and smile

Martina Navratilova called out a transgender athlete who won the 200m and 400m races at the Liberty League College track and field events. She took to X

This is an interesting podcast hearing her talk about Renee Richard's

People who call these men 'trans athletes' are manipulating language to hide the fact that it's men.

It's not 'trans' because women who identify as men are trans, and they are included.

It's men.

They need to stop this deceitful way of writing.

Snowypeaks · 08/05/2024 22:35

Yes, Datun. And it annoys me when threads on Mumsnet do the same. They don't even have to say "men" if they're worried about the thread being deleted, they can say "male".

And don't get me started on people continuing to use the word TW (or T W) on this platform - just say male/men. Unless you believe men can turn into women, or that woman is a word for someone who claims to identify as one, don't use that term. Language matters and that's why TRAs work so hard at corrupting and colonising it.

Melroses · 08/05/2024 22:52

They are just men running in women's races. Whatever is going on in their personal life is irrelevant. They are still impacting on fair competition for women.

Chersfrozenface · 09/05/2024 09:57

And the women competitors who lost are praised for being "graceful".

Do you know, I've never been "graceful" in any sense, thank fuck. A lot less grace is what women need.

But that makes us ultras and generally the cause of All That Is Wrong with the World as well as bringing the Refined Face of Acceptable [insert own term] Into Disrepute.

I suppose "graceful" means "cowed into silence, through fear of harassment and being sidelined." Just a guess.

But obviously the truth can't be told lest the Chosen Ones, the Righteous, the Sacred Caste be made to look bad.

So they opt for a more positive sounding adjective that chimes with traditional feminine stereotypes.

Regressive, much?

Yes and Richards changed his mind later I believe and now thinks it was unfair to compete against women. Martina struggled to beat him when she was in her prime and he was 43 ffs.

This is one of my favourite Mumsnet comments ever!

Yes it's all very "Oh noes, the mean woman wasn't smiley enough".

eurochick · 09/05/2024 15:26

Where is the graceful behaviour from the men invading women's sports? Surely if they are women they should behave like women and bow out gracefully?

Snowypeaks · 09/05/2024 16:04

Plus the implication is that they were beaten fair and square and therefore accepted defeat gracefully.

And that the winner role models and outwomans them in every womanly quality except

  • self-sacrifice
  • automatic deferral to the needs of others that so many women are taught to accept from earliest days
  • expectation that the personal needs or preferences of the support human will rarely count if there's someone with greater status in the hierarchy.

It's a tacit admission that literally no one thinks they are actually women in any sense, because they treat them like men.

I think that the word that they meant to use was 'graciously' but lots of people mix them up.

Either way - Martina is brilliant.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 09/05/2024 19:42

That's a great photo of Martina, she's not impressed.

The whole "grace" thing reminds me of a TV/movie trope I hate, where a woman either submits to rape, keeps it secret, doesn't report and/or refuses to show any aftereffects, therefore nobly "protecting" everyone else from her trauma instead of recognising it and getting angry. Of course the perpetrator gets off scot-free unless a male family member finds out about it way down the line, and exacts frontier justice despite her begging him not too 🙄

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 09/05/2024 19:44

Keep talking sense, Martina.
