It is that time of year again, time to make stuff up and call it trans history!

Stonewall are starting us with the absurd fact that Joan of Arc lived and died over three thousands years ago

1479 - 1458 BCE: Joan of Arc was willing to die at the stake rather than stop wearing men’s clothing.

Feel free to pass it on or make up whatever rubbish you like!

Why do we need Trans+ History Week?

What is Trans+ History Week?  Founded by QueerAF, Trans+ History Week (6 – 12 May 2024) is a week to learn and celebrate the rich and long history of trans, non-binary, gender diverse, and intersex people. It is a time to...

Joan of arc wore mens clothes? I always assumed her armour was pink, I feel so silly now.
So if we extrapolate that trousers are for menz are we going to trans anyone in a kilt or a long robe...what could possibly go wrong?

I wore trousers yesterday. And not a tiny hint of pink anywhere. Clearly I was in man mode. Nothing to do with them being appropriate for my plans.

TempestTost · 08/05/2024 17:07

I don't think she did actually wear men's clothing.

Fargo79 · 08/05/2024 17:10

How embarrassing. Ignoring everything else, that's just such a woefully incorrect summary of Joan of Arc's life and death. It would be funny were it not so disrespectful. And the date. Facepalm. Genuinely, my 9 year old would instantly recognise the glaring error there.

In the name of the wee man I thought you were paraphrasing to make a point, but no that is what Stonewall have actually put for Joan of Arc!!

What the actual Fuck!!

c 1479 - 1458 BCE: Joan of Arc was willing to die at the stake rather than stop wearing men’s clothing.

It beggars belief!!! I mean ... WTF - sorry I'm completely speechless!!

Crouton19 · 08/05/2024 17:58

Oh, she was fighting for fashion rights all along! How did I not know that already!? Silly me.

turbonerd · 08/05/2024 18:30

Wait till they find out what the Romans wore. And the greek.

Has anyone shown them pictures from Saudi Arabia? Long flowing dresses galore!

GlomOfNit · 08/05/2024 18:31

Presumably she also fought in the Trojan War... Grin

(Disclaimer: The 'Trojan War' (in as far as we could even call it that) is generally supposed to have taken place at the end of the Late Bronze Age in the Aegean and not in the 15th century BCE, where Stonewall places Jean d'Arc. I used to teach this stuff, sort of lucky I don't any more as archaeology is among the more captured of academic disciplines these days.)

GlomOfNit · 08/05/2024 18:33

Also - and correct me if I'm wrong, I never claimed to be a medievalist - Jean d'Arc wasn't actually fighting for the right to wear gender non-conforming clothing.

FOR FUCKSAKE

Queering the binary of 'before' and 'after' is an essential progressive project.

They are either queering the binary of before and after, or they're performing diversity (or inclusivity or something) without actually thinking about how to do it effectively. BCE and CE are used by Jewish people, and by others who don't want to refer to the era in which they live as 'the year of our Lord' when they don't recognise Jesus as their Lord. Tokenism. Just like the rest of their version of inclusivity.

FlakyPoet · 08/05/2024 19:22

God the phrasing of this “It is a time to reflect and educate on trans history and identities”.

Its like being told to sit on the naughty step.

Wouldn't he be a transwoman?

Cismyfatarse · 08/05/2024 19:37

Jesus was trans.

Archimedes was trans.

In fact all notable (wo)men who neglected to wear trousers (often because they hadn't been invented) were trans.

PermanentTemporary · 08/05/2024 19:38

Oh what fun reading that link.

The Galli, 'priests in the cult of Cybele'? Non-gendered? Lovely.

They were self-castrated eunuchs who then wore women's clothes. True, there have been various cults of self-castration over the centuries as I understand it. I would consider self-castration to be about as gendered an activity as it is possible to imagine. Certainly, the idea of men wanting to castrate themselves as an extreme outcrop of destructive sacrificial religious beliefs, a practice which crops up only to die away again for obvious reasons is an interesting thing to draw attention to.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 08/05/2024 19:43

QueenOfTheEntireFuckingUniverse · 08/05/2024 19:35

You're right. No wonder so many people utterly fail to grasp the terminology.

INeedAPensieve · 08/05/2024 20:53

My eyes have rolled so far back in my head they've fallen out.

It really really fucks me off when history is changed, particularly strong historical women being changed to suit an ideological modern agenda. There's so many amazing women already lost to history because of men erasing their stories without the ones we DO know about getting their truths retold.
