So they have voted to allow women to join. What self-respecting woman would be interested in this wankery? Come on!

Those that want to be able to network and have some chance of power/influence?

Ginmonkeyagain · 08/05/2024 08:32

I think we should all apply and then turn down membership for the LOLZ.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 08/05/2024 08:37

I'm just amazed that all these men joined a club that didn't admit women and didn't realise at the time that that's what they were doing.

Ginmonkeyagain · 08/05/2024 08:42

I am stuggling to give a shit either way to be frank. I suspect the main impediment to most of us joining the Garrick club wasn't our lack of penises (penii?).

DH said over breakfast this morning - well does this mean that the WI will need to start admitting men who like to bake? Which is kind of the argument made in that article but I admit did put me in a rage, because it doesn't feel like a fair equivalent.

WI already admits men who identify as women. This is just another argument for 'well, we let you into our spaces, so now let us into yours.'

I’d be surprised if the GC allowed women who claimed to be men as members. If so, all women had to do was say they were men to be allowed in.

as pp pointed out: it already admits men so that's a non-starter.

The minute the WI is stuffed with influential judges and barristers and is a networking opportunity at the highest levels of society, then maybe we should consider letting men join the WI?

And the twats on Twitter who are saying "HA! if you support this you MUST support Tickle in Tickle vs. Giggle" as though the Garrick club is in ANY WAY similar to an app where women can talk to other women.

NonCrimeHakeIncident · 08/05/2024 15:00

I wonder if Simon Case is regretting quitting now.

The issue is, as RBG put it, that women belong everywhere decisions are made. And that includes everywhere influence is built. If the women’s institute becomes a driving political force where it is well known multiple high ranking judges and senior politicians and captains of industry hang out, then yes there is a strong argument that men belong there too, but not as strong an argument that women belong in the Garrick because currently all other such spaces do also belong largely or sometimes solely to men. So the impact of one single institute that excludes them is smaller.

Brefugee · 08/05/2024 16:22

which is pretty much what i said?

Iamnotalemming · 08/05/2024 16:58

@Brefugee @Codlingmoths You've both made the point more eruditely than I could manage at breakfast time when I just told DH he was an idiot and stormed off to have a shower. Normally he gets these issues which is why I was annoyed by him this morning. I may try again when I'm feeling calmer.

MyLadyDisdainlsYetLiving · 08/05/2024 18:39

What @Brefugee and @Codlingmoths said.

Where men want single sex spaces for reasons of privacy and dignity (hospital wards, changing rooms, support groups such as Andy’s Man club, rape survivors) I’m fully supportive. Ditto for single sex gay dating facilities if they want men only because women change the vibe.

I personally wouldn’t want to join a club full of misogynists, whether that’s the Garrick or the local golf place. But I might feel different if I had been held back in my career or business because the important conversations were all being done “at the club”. In that case I might want to make a Very Big Point and apply for membership as soon as I could. And very visibly take advantage of every single facility I could while womanning. Grin
