If we had first past the post as in Westminster, the SNP would have a massive majority and would be able to do whatever they want. PR is fairer and generally results in more balanced politics, although in this particular situation it does give a disproportionately big voice to some more than extreme voices. The minority partner does not have a lot of power, as can be seen in the total failure of the greens to do anything in line with green politics in the current government. Probably the greens are amplifying the gender woo in the government but it’s really the SNP who are driving it.

Fair point, but they are doing it to get the support of the Greens, so it still works out that it’s the Green tail wagging the SNP dog.

Rainbowshit · 29/04/2024 13:11

The trigger was the rainbow greens calling for an EGM over the cass review. Not the climate targets.

I wasn’t sure about this post but then I thought, what the hell, I’m going to have my say.

The Scottish Government were told that Scottish women wouldn’t wheesht, they didn’t listen, and the SNP and Greens have both paid the price. Labour backed them to the hilt, voting for both the GRR and the Hate Crime laws and we won’t forget that.

I have been the tiniest of cogs in what is growing to be a very large wheel, but even the tiny part I’ve played has saved my sanity, and I’m a near seventy year old granny who has never been involved in any kind of activism before the gender stuff. It’s been a great joy to stand shoulder to shoulder with young, vibrant and very angry women, and they give me such hope.
I am in awe of women like JKR, Joanna Cherry, Lucy Blackburn, Johan Lamont, Ash Reagan, Helen Joyce and all the other magnificent women warriors who have been on the frontlines of this fight, and it is a fight.

I have said this elsewhere but I will say it again, Celtic women are a fierce mix that includes Pict, Briton and Viking, our ancestors were warrior women, defenders of the home and of our children. We are defiant and we won’t sit down, we won’t shut up and we will never, ever give up.

The stupid politicians should remember that women like K J Keen, Maya Forstater, Keira Bell, Julie Bindel and all the other wonderful frontline warrior women fighting for the safety of women and children in England, are the daughters of a country that gave the world Boudicca, and the pushers of this ideology aren’t the Romans, however much they would like to be.

I know that some of you don’t like such an adversarial approach but it really has felt that we are fighting a war in Scotland and it’s a war that we have to win, for the sake of our children and our grandchildren.

My formidable Scottish mother, who is 84 and doesn't get out and about like she used to, and who left the SNP over this utter nonsense (because she knows fine what a woman is and isn't and she was raging about being told to deny what she could see with her own eyes), is grateful to young women like you for standing up and being counted.

Dineasair · 29/04/2024 13:57

Aye, wish I had noticed she wasn’t included in the final post, she’s amazing and we owe her so much.

She's an inspiration to us...and an embarrassment to her teenagers after 'the merkin incident'Grin

Cosmosforbreakfast · 29/04/2024 14:13

Unless it's Joanna Cherry, whoever replaces Humza will be just as bad. We really need the SNP gone altogether so we can have a government focusing on actual problems like the economy, unemployment, crime, violence towards women, NHS, education, roads, housing, infrastructure etc etc etc. A cult with their Independence and anti women's rights agenda shouldn't have any position of power.

I'm delighted Humza was forced out. Women have been forced out of single, private spaces, women have been forced out of sport, he's had a dose of his own medicine now.

Sausagenbacon · 29/04/2024 14:18

I wonder if Katie Forbes will come forward?

Oh I love this, thanks, it’s a long time since I’ve been called a young woman 🤣 Your mum sounds amazing, my mum would have been the same if she was still here, and fit enough, she would have been out on the demonstrations with me, she was teensy but fierce 😂

The trans agenda is so alien to the way that most people think (ie most people are in touch with biological, material and ontological reality) that any policies based on it tend to shatter at first contact with the voter.

Scotland was in many ways the birthplace of the western european enlightenment. Scotland has a truly admirable and extraordinary intellectual history. I always knew that the Scots would see this shower of idiots off eventually. Basically - Scots are too clever to put up with the idea for long that the bepenised can don a dress and get into women's sports.

Edited

Currently, if you live in Scotland, it would be a Hate Crime to say or write that.
Even if not recorded as a HC it could be recorded as a non crime Hate Incident.
You would not be advised of this (or even aware) but it would come up in the Scottish equivalent of a DBS check.

persister · 29/04/2024 14:38

Apparently Swinney is considering standing as a 'unity candidate' ...

whistablenative · 29/04/2024 14:47

We need the SNP gone altogether. I can't wait another 2 years for a Party that will focus on education, NHS, housing, jobs, & improve crime & drugs figures.

yes
None of the greens have an actual seat, they are all elected under the additional member system.
The greens get a certain number of seats under this system. The greens then choose internally who sits as those additional members. Given the additional members are chosen by the party it's not possible to vote them out for ordinary voters. e.g. Harvie and Slater cannot be voted out for as long as the greens get two additional member seats. The only way to get rid of them is for the ordinary voters to not vote for the greens to the point where they don't get the additional seats under the PR system.

Oh wow! I always think the best part of democracy is that you get vote them all out!

This is so anti-democratic, you have representatives who are essentially not responsible to the voters, but rather the party.

lechiffre55 · 29/04/2024 16:25

@HereForTheFreeLunch @TempestTost
Yep. Say what you like about first past the post, but voting them out is always fun. See the Tories shortly.

PR always ends up with weak governments. You have the SNP where they at least won seats, and the people in those seats can be voted out. But they are beholden to the greens who havn't won a single seat. So really the greens hold all the cards right now. And its very difficult for the voters to get those greens out. The checks and balances are gone.
PR always sounds great on paper, but often results in situations like this all around the world.

Yup it looks like Swinny, Nicola Sturgeon's longtime deputy will be the anti-Forbes candidate. He was leader 2000-2003 and led the SNP to defeat. Gilruth and others have given endorsement.

Jenny Gilruth
·
John Swinney is the best choice to be Scotland’s First Minister & @theSNP leader. I will be strongly supporting him if, as I hope, he chooses to run.

He will not be a huge improvement:

Trans rights and LGBT issues

As deputy first minister, Mr Swinney voted for the Gender Recognition Reform Bill, which would have allowed children as young as 16 to apply to legally change their gender without any accompanying medical evidence.

He was accused of misleading fellow SNP MSPs over the Bill, allegedly promising that it would be a free vote and that they could vote “with their conscience” before allegedly U-turning and telling colleagues there was a three-line whip.

While serving as education secretary for the Scottish Government, he announced in 2018 that Scotland would be “the first country in the world” to have an LGBT-inclusive education “embedded” into the school curriculum.

However it maybe gender is not a core thing for him, I suspect he was following Sturgeon's and others lead. I think he will try to do a Starmer and start reverse ferretting to some degree. Gilruth would be worse.

Back in 2017 he was being more sensible:

Bloody well said!! Politicians and institutions need to take note that they under-estimate women at their peril.

And it absolutely has been a war which we are now finally starting to win.

And we remain undaunted.

Indomitable.

Steadfast.

And we won't wheesht!

Waitwhat23 · 29/04/2024 17:56

Also, during various conversations with colleagues today, they all (unprompted by me) mentioned some variant of 'the gender thing' as having brought the SNP to it's knees. The general public are now very clued up. And they've had enough.

Boiledbeetle · 29/04/2024 18:09

The Scottish Government should really learn that WOMEN WON'T WHEESHT!
