@Dineasair that's beautiful.

Dineasair · 29/04/2024 12:45

midgetastic · 29/04/2024 12:38

It's not outrageous- it's a natural consequence of trying to have a so old but slightly fairer system than the uk one where by a government with less than 40% of the vote has an overwhelming majority

For a whole country to be held in sway to a party that only a tiny fraction of the population voted for is outrageous.

lechiffre55 · 29/04/2024 12:46

@Dineasair
You may be fuelled by cups of tea, and you may be only one tiny cog in a giant machine bursting with tiny cogs, but your voice and your vote count just as much as even the largest of cogs. Its all the little cogs that form the frame that supports the giant cogs like JKR. Without the little cogs, there is no place for the big cogs.
You are right about women warriors. Attacking women's and children's rights is the act of fools, and it never ends well for the attacker. Humza being a perfect example, the First Minister of Scotland being forced to resign because of his self indenture to gender greens being shattered by The Cass Report.

InvisibleBuffy · 29/04/2024 12:46

And while a route through this week’s motion of no confidence was absolutely possible, I am not willing to trade my values and principles, or do deals with whoever simply for retaining power.

This implies he wasn't willing to accept Ash Regan/Alba's terms. Since Regan kept specifics out of her demands and simply asked him for progress on independence and to uphold women's and children's rights, I'd very much like a journalist to ask him to confirm which of these are against his principles.

JL690 · 29/04/2024 12:49

Ironically because he would not have survived votes of no confidence because he actually did the right thing for once by ending the travesty with the Greens.

AliCantI · 29/04/2024 12:51

But will the travesty of the Greens continue? Aren’t they going to be sat there all smug turning their noses up at any prospective leader that doesn’t wave the pink and blue flag?

JL690 · 29/04/2024 12:54

That will probably depend on the second no confidence vote, on the Scottish Government. If the SNP lose that the honourable follow up is a Holyrood election.

TerfsWereRight · 29/04/2024 13:01

PurpleSparkledPixie · 29/04/2024 09:39

Last week, Yousaf abruptly ended a power-sharing agreement between his Scottish National Party (SNP) and the Green Party,
Why did he do that? Surely you end such an agreement after a general election if you've won enough seats, not before.

Because the greens had called an EGM to vote on ending the agreement, and the feeling was they would probably vote to do that. So the SNP decided the optics were better if they ditched the greens before the greens ditched them.

quantumbutterfly · 29/04/2024 13:04

..and thanks too to Elaine Miller for pointing out how terrifying a bunch of women saying 'oh d'ya bloody think so..' can be.

Plus whenever I hear about her I remember to do my exercises, it's a win-win.

TerfsWereRight · 29/04/2024 13:05

I do think that gender issues are a part of this, but it’s worth pointing out that the key focus of the green revolt was about the SNP ditching the climate change targets - despite what you would guess from the leadership and the loudest voices in the party, a concern for the environment is still the driving force for a lot of the membership.

For sure the SNP and the greens have made themselves unattractive to a lot of voters through gender issues but it’s not the only or even the main issue, just as it wasn’t the main issue in Sturgeon’s resignation.

I do think that there will be pressure to find someone less fanatical about gender issues to take over, and that labour will be more hesitant about gender woo, so that’s a big win.

If the SNP can get a government together, they will need non-SNP votes to get anything through parliament, and in most cases this will only come from the greens. So yes, they are still likely to have some power.

MarieDeGournay · 29/04/2024 13:08

I'm 'monitoring' [sounds so much better than sitting in front of the TV with a cuppa] the Sky and BBC coverage, and there's barely a mention of the pastel-blue-and-white-striped elephant in the room in the assessment of what went wrong.
He referred to having 'underestimated the hurt' caused by his decision to end the power sharing arrangement - Green hurt feelings, presumably? They've been acting very hard done-by. Interesting that in his emotional resignation moment, he seems to still care about the Greens' hurt feelings more than anybody else's.

Ash Regan on now being very statespersonlike, speaking apparently more in sorrow than in anger [nice touch, Ash!]about HY's choice of resignation over talking to her and Alba..

Dineasair · 29/04/2024 12:45

For a whole country to be held in sway to a party that only a tiny fraction of the population voted for is outrageous.

If we had first past the post as in Westminster, the SNP would have a massive majority and would be able to do whatever they want. PR is fairer and generally results in more balanced politics, although in this particular situation it does give a disproportionately big voice to some more than extreme voices. The minority partner does not have a lot of power, as can be seen in the total failure of the greens to do anything in line with green politics in the current government. Probably the greens are amplifying the gender woo in the government but it’s really the SNP who are driving it.

The trigger was the rainbow greens calling for an EGM over the cass review. Not the climate targets.

I wasn’t sure about this post but then I thought, what the hell, I’m going to have my say.

The Scottish Government were told that Scottish women wouldn’t wheesht, they didn’t listen, and the SNP and Greens have both paid the price. Labour backed them to the hilt, voting for both the GRR and the Hate Crime laws and we won’t forget that.

I have been the tiniest of cogs in what is growing to be a very large wheel, but even the tiny part I’ve played has saved my sanity, and I’m a near seventy year old granny who has never been involved in any kind of activism before the gender stuff. It’s been a great joy to stand shoulder to shoulder with young, vibrant and very angry women, and they give me such hope.
I am in awe of women like JKR, Joanna Cherry, Lucy Blackburn, Johan Lamont, Ash Reagan, Helen Joyce and all the other magnificent women warriors who have been on the frontlines of this fight, and it is a fight.

I have said this elsewhere but I will say it again, Celtic women are a fierce mix that includes Pict, Briton and Viking, our ancestors were warrior women, defenders of the home and of our children. We are defiant and we won’t sit down, we won’t shut up and we will never, ever give up.

The stupid politicians should remember that women like K J Keen, Maya Forstater, Keira Bell, Julie Bindel and all the other wonderful frontline warrior women fighting for the safety of women and children in England, are the daughters of a country that gave the world Boudicca, and the pushers of this ideology aren’t the Romans, however much they would like to be.

I know that some of you don’t like such an adversarial approach but it really has felt that we are fighting a war in Scotland and it’s a war that we have to win, for the sake of our children and our grandchildren.

👏 👏

The EGM was about both and it wasn’t just the rainbow greens who called for it. See, e.g., this article: https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/24283157.inside-story-green-rebels-want-rid-leadership/ about how concern over the climate change issues is driving the revolt in the greens.

'It is toxic': The inside story of the Greens in meltdown as rebels demand leaders go

The anger among Green Party rebels is palpable. Some are close to tears.

I’m not sure he really cares about any of it - I think his concern about hurt green feelings is damage limitation. The SNP need the greens to vote through anything they want to get through parliament and they’ve seriously pissed them off. So he needs to say enough for Patrick Harvie et al to continue to support him without losing the support of their party. It’s all just politics.

Rainbowshit · 29/04/2024 13:18

No that's a rewriting of history. The rainbow greens triggered the EGM.

Thank you, well said, nothing has made me prouder than being a part of the resistance. It’s so hard when even the ones that I’m fighting for are being fooled by this, heartbreaking, but that won’t stop me.

No that's a rewriting of history. The rainbow greens triggered the EGM.

It wasn’t just the rainbow greens. They did call for an EGM but so did other people in the party who were motivated by the climate issue. I’m not trying to deny that gender issues weren’t an important factor of that this isn’t fantastic news for us, but I’m not sure it’s helpful to overstate how much gender issues are driving all of this. It’s part of a bigger picture.
