Gender neutral toilets

Alistair Campbell on Instagram chose as his tree of the day a toilet door with Gender Neutral on it. He can't see the issue apparently.

I wanted to explain succinctly but kept deleting, any ideas? Basically I don't think he's thought about the subject from the female perspective.

What a subject for my first post here!

Currently he's got 3,500 likes but 3,400 comments and 500ish RTs, which is (a) about five times more than the most contentious post he's made in months and (B) I think technically a ratio, which again hasn't happened in months.

Will he listen or think about this? will he fuck. But it's interesting.

Blackcats7 · 27/04/2024 08:13

I thought he was probably parroting his daughter too. Very disappointed in him. Now consigned to the twat pile.

Violetparis · 27/04/2024 08:27

I think he knows exactly what he is doing and is deliberately winding people up. He's probably hoping for a comment from JKR to generate more publicity for himself. Can't stand him, he's an arrogant, aggressive arsehole.

OceanicBoundlessness · 27/04/2024 08:37

In a mixed sex toilet I've:

Witnessed men pissing with the door open

Wanted to leave a cubicle and stood quietly listening knowing me and the person coming in to the room would be alone in a small space and tried to work out if that person is a man and if so is likely to be any risk and how to time my exit.

Had a drunk man aggressively ask me what I was doing in 'his' (meaning the men's) toilet

Been told be staff to use the disabled loo if I'm not comfortable. I have no need for a disabled loo and don't want to make life harder for disabled people by making their resources more scarce.

Even worse than mixed sex loos I really hate to loos where there are still two rooms, one marked urinals, basins, stalks and the other basins and stalls because there's an even higher chance you're going to find yourself alone in the women's mixed sex loo with a wrong'un.

sashagabadon · 27/04/2024 08:38

I have a theory that many of the male commentators like AC that support gender ideology do so because they have opinionated daughters in their 30’s. Daughters that have not yet become mothers and are privately educated and london elite based.
They bow down to their daughters opinions on this matter - see also Jonathan Ross- and yes I agree when the daughters change their minds they will too.
this phenomenon happens to women with adult daughters too - see Jane Garvey a- but not as profound as they know about navigating life as a female and I bet much prefer single sex loos!

Pleasealexa · 27/04/2024 08:59

So disappointed as his lack thought on this subject, as be has waded in with no attempt to see this from a woman's perspective. It also questions his thinking on other issues. I've unsubscribed/unfollowed.

Violetparis · 27/04/2024 09:07

I think some commentators are more concerned about being seen to follow the latest fashionable view in their elite media circles than protecting women and girls. I don't understand those either who think they can't express a different viewpoint to their kids, so what if you don't agree on everything, nobody does.

And Tom Holland (historian, not actor) has supported JKR on Twitter/X.

Strangely enough I was listening to one of the first episodes of TRiH last night and JKR was mentioned in relation to the 17thc witchhunts. It was said that she was a good example of what happened to women who dare speak out of turn (think this was from 2020)

Countrylife2002 · 27/04/2024 11:34

Campbell’s co editor of the New European, Matthew D’ancona, is good on this though, so at least he has someone in his network speaking truth.

Mavenss · 27/04/2024 11:40

Stripybasket · 26/04/2024 20:36

There's an absolute arsehole on the thread who is driving me mad. Honestly what is wrong with people? This is not a hard concept to understand. Women commenting should really know better.

What thread?

Is he? I gave up reading the New European, because it was such a sausage-fest, and studiously ignored women's rights issues.

Countrylife2002 · 27/04/2024 12:19

@MissLucyEyelesbarrow yes article in the other week where he’s praising maya , JK etc

Jewel1968 · 27/04/2024 12:48

I have just been for a swim and I was walking behind a young teenager wrapped in a towel and no swimsuit underneath (most of us leave our swimsuits on in the shower and remove in the more private cubicle). Approaching us was a young man who reacted in a shocked way to the teenager. He looked uncomfortable. It's the first time I thought - men don't like this either.

Pretty embarrassing for a bloke if he gets an erection in swimming trunks. It's easy to label all men as pervs, but both men and women can feel strong sexual attraction if suddenly confronted by someone attractive and semi-nude. Women have the advantage of it not being obvious to onlookers. And, if she was school-age and he is an adult, he was no doubt also conscious of the inappropriateness.

MotherOfCatBoy · 27/04/2024 13:35

I was so pissed off about that Insta post that I commented. Don’t think it’ll make any difference but I think it’s important for people to see the reaction in the comments.

Womanofcustard · 27/04/2024 13:36

I’ve read a lot of comments on here saying ‘basically I think he’s (AC) a good bloke’.
Remember Iraq and the Dodgy Dossier?

Jewel1968 · 27/04/2024 13:47

@MissLucyEyelesbarrow and with her being young she is probably a bit clueless. Whilst I am used to it after many many years I know if I had a choice I would prefer single sex and I suspect most men would too.

HidingUnderARock · 27/04/2024 16:47

Is there any mileage in requiring cubicle doors to open outward? I realise that might require more space in the basin area, but recently a lot of toilets are almost impossible to enter or exit as the door almost touches the bowl as it opens.

Excellent. There speaks a wise man with a wife and 2 teenage daughters.

That’s the first time I’ve seen the AC tweet. What an absolute bell end. No surprises, he has always been one. I expect nothing else.

Good for him. It doesn't seem to have occurred to Mr Campbell that all his arguments for gender neutral toilets are concerned with the way men mess up the facilities.

One day men will be asked to change their behaviour, rather than just pushing the problem onto women.

That's exactly what I said to him on Twatter.

He's always been a total prick, why would you expect him to change?

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/mixed-sex-wards-breach-nhs-streeting-b2534608.html

If Labour recognise that mixed sex wards are not right, hopefully they will recognise the problems with toilets next.

Jewel1968 · 29/04/2024 09:37

I know there are some countries that have mixed sex toilets and have had them for years. I think I read somewhere that having mixed sex toilets all the way from childhood to adulthood normalises it and men behave respectfully in this context. That may be true ( am sure a psychologist could explain) but the fact is this country hasn't had mixed sex toilets and if you suddenly introduce them you introduce problems.

I think in the UK we separate the sexes at about age 4. If you want to introduce mixed sex toilets you would have to do it slowly and carefully. Even then I am sure there could be issues. I suspect design would be important too.
