Online talk Thurs 25 April 2024: "Deconstructing transphobia" - Dr Natacha Kennedy

There's an online talk tomorrow afternoon hosted by the Institute of Education (part of UCL) by Dr Natacha Kennedy (from Goldsmiths).

The topic is "Deconstructing transphobia" - "Join this event to hear Natacha Kennedy give an analysis of the different strategies deployed by those opposed to trans people's human rights."

It's from 2.30-4.30pm (which partially overlaps with the Aston University online talk). I'd be interested to learn Dr Kennedy's definition of "transphobia" and who the people "opposed to trans people's human rights" are and how they're doing that. Unfortunately I'm not free to listen in - is anyone else free to attend and report back?

It really wouldn’t surprise me. Even calling it ‘The Feminist and Gender Equality Network’ has the smirk of duper’s delight about it. Say any old shit but put the word ‘feminist’ at the front and you can get away with it.

The event is happening now. Is anyone watching?

Signalbox · 25/04/2024 16:49

Crikey that was illuminating. I managed to watch the last half hour + questions. Should have called the talk DARVO and Lies. Honestly these people are completely off their rockers.

Apparently “GCAs” are ideological cultists who are almost entirely funded by the far right and who want to remove trans rights and eradicate them from society.

I wouldn’t have minded but Natacha’s lecturing erm style was erm atrocious. How can erm a lecturer and erm someone who erm has achieved so erm much in academia be so erm incapable of stringing erm a sentence together?

Signalbox · 25/04/2024 17:06

This bit made me 😂

After ten-odd years of listening to TA dribble there's nothing there that I need to hear but sunlight etc I suppose...

Kennedy, along with Roz Kaveney of "great hairy prong" fame , was a Guardian favourite back in the day.

For those who fancy a wee walk down memory lane and an eye watering opening discussion of the ins and outs of the ladydique, here's a thread for you...you can thank me later.

Lol at someone so academically dishonest they’d pretend to be two people to give their academic paper more weight saying this.
“We suggest that the Cass Review contains unsound methodology, unacceptable bias, and unsupported conclusions. As academics and experts in the field, we regard The Cass Review as potentially harmful to trans children.“

Maybe it is a royal we, Flaky.
Perhaps Natacha identifies as the Queen/King of … I dunno … reason?

NotNatacha · 25/04/2024 19:34

I watched all of it, but I can’t listen and write at the same time.

Here are a few bits I wrote down.

In the section on the Cass report Natacha said “I’ve read pretty much all of it.”

Why not all if you’re going to lecture about it?

Natacha also said, “Most trans children are not questioning. They know they are trans.”

NotNatacha · 25/04/2024 19:42

Natacha said Natacha was misgendered in a shop, something which happens “very very rarely”. N (reluctantly, but it’s conveniently situated) went back to the shop at another time. N heard two ‘cis’ ( pronounced ‘cizz’) women who were called “Sir” by the shopkeeper so N realised N hadn’t been misgendered after all.

This anecdote was straight after the break, but I must have missed the context as I couldn’t work out why it was relevant to the lecture at all.

Apologies for the minor derail, but vis-a-vis the mention on page 1, I’ve noticed on Twitter that, as women are rising up against men in their spaces, an increasing number of men are claiming to be intersex. They never use the term DSD and it’s usually one so rare that it’s hard to find info. There was even a grifter who had been on a TV program about intersex people, but it was obvious he was lying, because the story he was telling didn’t fit the condition he was pretending to have. So they’re not just stealing from women. These grifters will take from anyone. There are times when I feel I really despise some of these men and their lies.

NotNatacha · 25/04/2024 22:52

I wrote so many notes from the talk, I would like to pass on some more.

What’s wrong with trans women getting pregnant? This [will?] be possible in a few years.) Treatment is almost the same as cis women trying to get pregnant. It’s fascism.

Suffragettes were a lot more violent. We [trans people] are described as being violent but we are probably the most peaceful movement.

In the Media section of the talk N said there’s a systematic exclusion of trans people from mainstream media. They are only reported when big events like the Cass report or Brianna Ghey happen.

In the Keira Bell case, the first conviction was widely reported. The second case, resulting in an acquittal, was rarely reported, eg by The Guardian.

Audio: There were 18 anti-trans articles each day. There weren’t even
18 pro-trans articles in the whole year.

Screen:
Media Propaganda - Systemic exclusion

  • In 2023 there were 18 anti-trans articles/broadcast segments in mainstream media per day. (Davies 2024)
  • That is approx. 6500 over the year
  • Almost none written or produced/directed by trans/GD people
  • Often no trans/GD person was included, no input or opinion was sought
partystress · 25/04/2024 23:17

Was this really hosted by the Institute of Education? Absolutely terrifying that this chancer has got a platform still where he can influence the people teaching our children, many of whom, sorry ‘Sara at the back’ who wishes they could get away with violence, will have pesky, white, middle class women as a parent.

BettyFilous · 25/04/2024 23:20

Signalbox · 25/04/2024 17:06

Edited

Oh brother! 🤦

FlakyPoet · 25/04/2024 23:31

I wonder what ‘Sara at the back’ had been smoking….

I got the feeling Sara may have been a stooge. Kennedy needs a supportive plant in the audience to take the mic and give the impression that this stuff is what some people believe…

Also the incel logic about ‘cis white women’ in the Just Stop Oil movement, etc supposedly having power over big pro-violence men. Next they’ll complain that it’s transphobic not to use men as honey traps.

StealthSpinach · 26/04/2024 00:59

Could that talk not be considered an incitement to violence against “cizz” women?

Crankywiddershins · 26/04/2024 06:51

@NotNatacha 18 anti trans news items per day? Would that include stories about Isla Bryson, Katie Dolatowski, Amy George, Karen White, Scarlett Blake and all the other fragrant trans ladies?

Datun · 26/04/2024 07:29

Dear lord.

I mean I've heard it before. But it's no less insane because of that.

And now everyone else can hear it too. 'Fascism'

Delphin · 26/04/2024 07:46

@Datun And no-one gets up and asks for a definition of fascism.

FeckOffAstonUniversityDoxingDepartment · 26/04/2024 08:03

Did NK say this?

KB’s case was a judicial review, so no conviction or acquittal took place, that’s criminal law language.

FeckOffAstonUniversityDoxingDepartment · 26/04/2024 08:08

And NK really can’t complain about a lack of trans voices when they’ve been refusing to appear on TV segments with GC feminists for years.

Turns out ‘No Debate’ was a daft strategy, eh NK?

Although,, tbf, Operation Let Them Speak has been working wonders for women and children.

A middle aged male in a wig talking about chemically atunting the pubertal development of healthy children isn’t a winning strategy.

If Mermaids had been run by a TW rather than a mum they would never have been as successful.

Yes, this one got me too.

I did also snigger involuntarily. It is almost like Natacha doesn’t have the foggiest clue about anything.

Oh yes. Almost the same, with no ovaries, fallopian tubes, vagina or womb or menstrual cycle. Practically identical.

FlakyPoet · 26/04/2024 09:13

The think is NK/MH has been disingenuous from the start. Has anyone taken one for the team read/analysed this self-co-authored paper? http://www.gjss.org/sites/default/files/issues/chapters/papers/Journal-07-02--02-Kennedy-Hellen.pdf

Very quickly you see citations from Kennedy and then another from Hellen. Clearly this sets out to deceive, pretending they are two separate people.

I get the sense that this is like one lengthy Derren Brown-style hoax. Seeing what you can get away with, what bullshit you can make people swallow, how you can manipulate people to do weird stuff.

I think NK/MH is as surprised as we are with just how far it’s gone.
