I have osteoarthritis and carry a stick when out walking (proper walking walking). It helps me balance and is essential on rough ground. It also has the advantage, in my view, of being a handy weapon to fend off unfriendly dogs or unpleasant people. I once used it to disperse a herd of probably harmless, but quite frightening bullocks.
I wonder if some of our activist friends see their sticks in the same way? As terf dispersal tools?

Fantastic news. I did a little dance when I heard. 💃🏻

Oh he was sciencing all right. And he also revealed that he was angry. Angry sciencing. The most sciencey form of science.

😂

SeanBeansMealDeal · 18/04/2024 17:35

This is amazing news. Whoever thought it would take scientists so long to consider science, let alone basic common sense?

I just hope this doesn't adversely affect the minority of children for whom puberty blockers were originally developed - those who know full well if they're a boy or a girl, but are suffering from extremely early puberty onset and so need to delay their own puberty until an appropriate time, rather than having any wish to cancel their own natural puberty, in an attempt to present as the opposite sex.

There's a webcam on George Square where I can see that around 100 fanatics have turned out for the demonstration.

I hope they've dressed warm, it's chilly for April.

Can I demonstrate against the weather forecast? They keep predicting rain and they should make the sun shine instead.

It's quite astonishing that the Scottish greens red line is the chemical castration of kids and not the u turn on climate change targets?!?!

How did they become so lost?!

Johnnywsbell admitted much further down the thread that it was an old clip, but I was taken in at first. Though I did have an inkling that Shon Faye is a good bit older than that!

Shon identifies as whatever age Shon wants to be.

Fantastic news though,

So Scotland have banned them, obviously England has and I guess by default Wales, how about Northern Ireland, how do they fit in?

Boiledbeetle · 18/04/2024 21:43

I imagine the Scottish support animals are all on overtime. Do we need a whip round for some dreamies for their dogs?

Snowypeaks · 18/04/2024 22:28

I was about to post the same response. They are spinning hard. As ever with that lot, the opposite of what they say is closer to the truth.

Topofthemountain · 18/04/2024 22:28

Further recommendations also pose questions as to whether healthcare for trans children and young people is being designed to different standards than those for other children and young people.

Yes, Stonewall, it has been. In no other area would those standards be chucked out of the window. No other area has follow-up been so poor and research so actively blocked.

It is time this healthcare is given as much due diligence as any other area.

But you don't want that, do you?

fiftypercentoff · 18/04/2024 22:40

And this bit about social transitionaing ' ensure Dr Cass’ recommendations against a ‘blanket ban’ on social transitioning is fully implemented, communicated effectively and translated consistently across policy areas

My understanding was that Dr Cass said soical transitioning is not a neutral act and there are psychological implications for the child.

What the actual!!! they have some balls (literally)

AtrociousCircumstance · 18/04/2024 22:45

Amazing news. Progress. I’m astonished.

Sounds like bluster to me. What else can the clinics say? "Oops we have been doing it wrong all along and made utter tits of ourselves as well as harming children and young people"?

But - is anyone saying this is not a sound research review? Found any real methodological flaws?

It's going to take time but in the end the Australian medical establishment will have to face facts too. It's only been a week.

They have dismissed it as irrelevant.
The laws are already passed here, they are continuing as they wish, simply disregarding the facts.

'Australia is not the UK': Major reviews into gender affirming care - ABC listen

UK's approach to gender affirming care has come under massive scrutiny off the back of two reviews into the system.   However experts here are warning that applying these findings to Australia, misses important context.  Associate Professor Elizabeth...

This report is oozing with complacency ("Nothing to see here, we are doing it right with our supportive, gender-affirming ways")
Interesting that they've had to amend that article to properly reflect what the doctor who supports the Cass report actually said.
Paraphrasing, hmm.
It feels like the outcry following Cass hasn't hit the Australian gender-affirming medical community yet, but it's going to be hard for them to keep their fingers in their ears from now on.

As the insurers start leaving the building the shine will wear off the medical establishment's complacency. Insurers like evidence, they are all about the statistics. If one Australian medical insurer went last summer then more are likely to go now. And when the outcome evidence appears in the UK (the evidence that Sajid Javid has had to insist that UK clinics hand over) it wont be possible to plead ignorance or refuse to do studies on the grounds that the truth might scare people who don't want to believe it.

There comes a point when international best practice becomes the adult version of "everyone else's mum lets them stay out late".

They can’t say they didn’t know, can they? There’s surely got to be an element of quiet thoughts to themselves of “What if we’re wrong? Will I be held liable?”?

An excellent article by Glosswitch

https://unherd.com/newsroom/puberty-blocker-ruling-hasnt-solved-scotlands-gender-problem/

There been several parents mentioned in these thread who have transed their very young children. These kids have grown having bought what they've been sold. The parents are using them as an argument for business as usual and the children must be terrified.

Puberty blocker ruling won't cure Scotland's gender problem

So it turns out that Scottish children are no more suitable for medical experimentation than English ones. Yesterday NHS Scotland responded to the Cass Review by pausing the prescription of puberty blockers for gender-confused children and — in a move...

https://www.scotsman.com/news/politics/snp-ministers-delay-ps9m-funding-for-under-strain-gender-identity-services-4596341

'SNP public health minister Maree Todd promised “we plan to provide £9 million over three years, with £2m in 2022/23, to fund new service models, address waiting times and support those waiting to access services”.
But budget documents show the Scottish Government has only allocated £2m in each of the past three financial years, including this financial year. It means the proposed £9m has been cut by one third to £6m.
The Scottish Government has confirmed to The Scotsman the £9m will now be delivered over five years instead of three years. The aims of the strategy include to “bring gender identity services within national waiting times standards” and “support the establishment of a nationally commissioned young person’s gender identity service”.'

I'm always stunned it still exists. Given the history.
