Not sure who to vote for. Lib Dem man posted some sensible stuff about an issue on the local fb group then tried to request me as a friend, I thought I’d gauge his response on this issue. Would be funny if it weren’t so fucking tragic.

I thought that was an AI response. The last line just sounds odd and like a ChatGpt answer. But turns out ChatGPT has a better answer that while not ideal, he should have cut and pasted!

Is it only me that fears that this new study using AI to analyse brain features that can tell in 9/10 cases what sex the brain is, will be used by people to justify poorer treatment for women in all kinds of situations? Or just simply to justify their misogyny. Not just be TRAs to try to insist that you can get a "female" brain jn a "male" body, which is more important than their sexed body.

songaboutjam · 17/04/2024 19:22

I'm highly sceptical of the idea that male and female brains are near-identical, and that any differences are purely down to socialisation. The two sexes have evolved for different reproductive purposes; if women had the same childrearing, fighting or danger sensitive instincts as men then we'd have been extinct out of the gate.

A parent friend's anecdote led me to this article implying potential sex differences in neonatal attention. Another one here showing subtle sex-based differences. And cognitive differences in rats, which don't experience gendered socialisation in the same way as adults.

I don't see a contradiction between acknowledging a biological role in cognition (however limited) and rejecting the "male brain in female body" narrative. One has more evidence than the other.

CarterStopableSM · 17/04/2024 19:24

I watched a woman at nursery say to a group of 4year old girls happily playing with a remote control car 'let Jack play, you'd like a go Jack, wouldn't you' and then let him monopolize the car for the rest of the session.
That's why Jack grew up driving heavy plant (hand eye coordination ) and the girls had better writing skills not because anyone was born a certain way.

I was the first girl to learn to weld at technical college in the 90s. It was like they were impressed at a particularly skilled monkey. I'm particularly sensitive to the whole confusion between sex and gender and stereotypes. The current wave of trans arguments would not have helped anyone breaking down barriers creating opportunities.

The Lib Dems believe in nothing.
Ed Davey fought to protect corrupt post office executives and allowed innocent post masters and post mistresses to go to prison.
Vile people devoid of any integrity

Oh yeah and he knew about his dad’s conviction - actually everyone should google aimee challoner 🤮

Thatsthewayitisnt · 17/04/2024 19:39

So who do we vote for? Not one of the parties is a credible choice.

ApocalipstickNow · 17/04/2024 19:43

WhyHuntSnails · 17/04/2024 16:42

they genuinely believed that male and female brains were different and trans people clearly had brains that were not 100% in accordance with their biological sex

So what?

Even ignoring what they think they mean by 'in accordance', why look for teeny subtle differences from average brain activity while ignoring the presence of a vagina or a penis?

This should be reposted on every page.

My reply would be ‘are you smoking crack?’

Btw in case anyone is in Elmbridge and wants to know - the candidate is Kevin Whincup (am I allowed to say that?)

it’s pretty depressing there is no one to vote for. Unlike some of the other posters on the AIBU threads, I don’t think this is a trivial or cultural “one issue vote” topic. I think it’s fundamental to our beings and our future, and the country we are living in.

The response from my labour candidate..

What is a woman?
Can a man get pregnant?
Are single sex spaces important?

Same. I find those AIBU responses at odds with how fundamental this is and as such a bit strange / depressing

What does living as a woman involve?

I would love to know his answer.

I mainly WFH, seldom go out anywhere. I am female, how would I be doing it differently if I were a man?

Based on my husband to do it differently as a man by using every cup and plate whilst WFH and putting them on the side instead of the dishwasher

For those people discussing pink brains and blue brains. Not sure there is really the appetite for this amongst neurosurgeons. There are people desperately in need of MRIs etc. that they are dealing with.

This is from The Brain Tumour Charity:

‘34 people are diagnosed with a brain tumour every single day, and there are 88,000 people living with this disease across the UK.’

This was on a campaign to call for a National Brain Tumour Strategy.

‘A National Brain Tumour Strategy would help to address the challenges at every stage of the brain tumour pathway including diagnosis, care, treatment and research.
For brain tumour patients, it simply takes too long to be diagnosed. Moreover, once diagnosed, according to our Improving Brain Tumour Care survey results, in some areas of the country, people do not receive the care they should expect, including access to a Clinical Nurse Specialist. Their treatment options are also limited and have not changed in decades.
Brain tumours are a particularly complex disease; there are 120 different types of brain and central nervous system tumours, and they can be low grade or high grade. There are differences in how brain tumours start, develop and are tracked compared to other cancers that mean that they are often missed by NHS cancer programmes.
By generally placing brain tumours within the cancer space, we neglect nearly half (49%) of the brain tumour population. Low grade tumours, which are not classified as cancerous, are also devastating and the treatment and care for patients with these, and subsequent long-lasting impacts, can be life-altering.
The only way these challenges can be tackled is on a strategic, national level, which is why we are calling upon all four devolved nations to work together on a National Brain Tumour Strategy and national implementation plans.’

Now obviously looking at sex differences, is useful for research in to disease. But using scarce resources to determine if you have a girly brain or a boyish brain? When you can tell by sight 99.9% of the time?

Also, stating the obvious: if you are a woman and have a brain that falls into the male size range or any other parameter - YOU ARE STILL A WOMAN. Just as if you have size 10 feet, that is much more likely amongst men, you are still a woman.

(Ps I know someone who has had a part of her brain removed that was deemed to be significantly less active in men - unsurprisingly enough, she did not change sex in the process).

I am firmly gender critical but recently saw a TV discussion about this and the person who was pro-trans said that they genuinely believed that male and female brains were different and trans people clearly had brains that were not 100% in accordance with their biological sex. He reckoned that in 50 years time we'd all be hanging our heads in shame to have treated trans people in this way (similar to how our views on homosexuality have evolved).

I instinctively reject this notion but then again I'm no scientist. What if he's right? What if there is a biological element to being trans?

What if he's right? What if there is a biological element to being trans?

What if there was? What would that change?

We didn't create woman-only resources (spaces, opportunities, legal protections) for people with inner feelings of womanlyness. We created them to mitigate the challenges people with female bodies face due to (1) biology, (2) structural bias due to historical patriarchy, and (3) conscious and unconscious sexism at the individual level.

By definition, people who may have sone feeling of womamhood but weren't considered to be women (ie male people) didn't face those challenges so don't need the resources. Also by definition, female people with feelings of manhood do still need these resources.

Whether trans feelings are innate or not is a red herring when it comes to female only resources.

Sometimes I'm absolutely flummoxed by the 'direction of travel' in gender politics and wonder if I've missed something. There's a corruption of definitions and bending of the truth, delusion and warped thinking plus the likes of politicians/activists etc dancing on the head of a pin. Those saying TWAW are simplistic at best. How's it come to this??!

They're not simplistic, they're lying.

tissueboxandcandles · 17/04/2024 20:27

Ask them what they thought about the Cass review. Then ask them why they have accepted so much cash from the people who make Lupron. Then mention Aimee Challenor and maybe then ask how you can see into men's souls to determine that they are actually women. That should give them something to grapple with.

Onewomanriot · 17/04/2024 18:47

Just jumping in to say a recent study indicates that there are detectable differences between male and female brains.

https://www.pnas.org/doi/abs/10.1073/pnas.2310012121

From the abstract "Our results demonstrate that sex differences in functional brain dynamics are not only highly replicable and generalizable but also behaviorally relevant, challenging the notion of a continuum in male-female brain organization."

Great. But if your brain is in a male body it's still a male brain and vice versa.

Not sure why I got deleted for mentioning David Challoner.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aimee_Knight

In 2018, David Challenor, Knight's father, who had been serving as her election agent, was convicted and jailed for raping and torturing a 10-year-old girl, and for making indecent images of children.[24][25] Knight's recruitment of her father, despite her knowledge of the charges for 22 sexual offences, led to an investigation and Knight's suspension from the Green Party. She later resigned and joined the Liberal Democrats, but was suspended in 2019 over tweets allegedly posted by her partner concerning sexual fantasies around children.[38][39][40]Knight resigned from Stonewall UK at around the same time, leaving the United Kingdom for the United States.
During 2019, Knight went through the process of changing her legal gender through the Gender Recognition Act 2004, and the British government issued a new birth certificate recognising her as female.[46]
