Women's rights general conversations - Thread 8

Continuation of Thread 7.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

Women's rights general conversations - Thread 8

To repurpose the argument frequently used about loos/changing rooms etc - this can't possibly have happened because men would never go the trouble of dressing up as women to commit fraud when they could simply hack bank accounts or sell imaginary bridges.

duc748 · 30/05/2024 13:58

But if you can commit fraud, and get yer rocks off at the same time; Brucie bonus!

MouseMinge · 30/05/2024 23:24

Loving Brucie Bonus!

So many. So blooming many of them.

Interesting thing observed yesterday and today.

I was staying in a hotel. At both check in and check out the receptionist (different person each time) said 'Hello sir' as I approached the desk.

Both days I was wearing trainers, jeans, a black gilet and a very bright pink top. Hair up, no makeup, discreet silver jewellery. I'm not feminine but definitely don't look like a man (for those who've not met me, I vaguely resemble a taller Queen Victoria at around this age images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/7/2019/11/AM9WYT-2-fe5d36f.jpg?quality=90&resize=980,654).

Have people completely lost the ability to determine sex?

Were they ignoring me completely, and addressing Mr Bint who was loitering several metres behind?

Do they assume anyone approaching with purpose must be a man?

duc748 · 02/06/2024 16:33

It's uncanny, Bint; that's exactly how I imagine you! 😆

Did you say anything?

NoBinturongsHereMate · 02/06/2024 16:36

I didn't mention it, although may have raised an eyebrow. MrBint noticed and commented on the weirdness once out of earshot.

I'll be back at the same hotel on my own in a couple of days, so an intrigued to see what happens.

MouseMinge · 02/06/2024 22:35

That's really bizarre.

bignosebignose · 03/06/2024 11:57

Brings to mind this old favourite. If you were a proper lady you'd do this.

duc748 · 03/06/2024 12:05

New to me! 😃It's funny, but it's not.

MouseMinge · 03/06/2024 21:58

His reaction to being "misgendered" is just a further reason as to why why he will always be "misgendered".

Everything about you screams "toxic male", SIR.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 03/06/2024 22:51

I don't think I'll be trying that.

I may have a go at raising the other eyebrow if it happens again.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 05/06/2024 11:43

Hotel reception update. I was out of clean pink tops so the second run of the experiment had 2 variables - pink vs blue top, and lurking MrBint vs no lurking MrBint. Also, I can't swear to it being exactly the same receptionists.

Score: 0 instances of 'Sir'. Also no 'Madam'.

Alone and wearing blue I'm simply addressed as 'Hello, can I help you?'.

So either they call everyone in pink 'sir'; or when approached by 2 people they can only see the man, even if the woman is the one closer to and talking to them.

duc748 · 05/06/2024 11:50

Male or female receptionist?

Actually, I don't like being called 'Sir' much; I'd be happier with Bint's last response. How do MNetters feel about being called Madam? Sir and Madam always seem to me a phoney deference, sometimes it's easy to imagine a degree of sarcasm in there too (snooty waiters, etc).

lcakethereforeIam · 05/06/2024 12:17

Don't like being Madam'd, it's a bit high falutin' for the likes of me....and I find it terribly aging 😆..!?..😢

bignosebignose · 03/06/2024 11:57

Look at that male aggression writ large. And people wonder why we want single sex spaces

Poor customer service people

Madam is awful to me, I always think Sir is the better deal. Not that I want to use it, but for men

As the old joke goes, Ian, it could be worse; she could be black!

Bar the use of appalling Americanism 'nothingburger', that's a really good piece.

EasternStandard · 05/06/2024 14:06

How repugnant he is

NoBinturongsHereMate · 05/06/2024 14:55

Male or female receptionist?

Some of each, both times.

I'm not keen on madam, but if men are going to get sir it should be equal.
