JK Rowling on Cass

I can't see a thread on this and I'm not on X, so I've only seen this in the DM, but it moved me to tears - the most heart-rending line being this one: "Today's not a triumph, it's the laying bare of a tragedy."

The Mail piece is making it about her vs the HP stars but, when you read her comments, she actually is redirecting apologies to those who have suffered as a result of this madness - entirely in keeping with everything JKR stands for and, again, very distressing. She references being in contact with detransitioners who have written her "heartbreaking letters of regret".

To the media types/ celebs who egged it all on, she says this:

'The consequences of this scandal will play out for decades. You cheered it on. You did all you could to impede and misrepresent research. You tried to bully people out of their jobs for opposing you. Young people have been experimented on, left infertile and in pain.'

Just love JKR.

JK Rowling says she WON'T forgive Harry Potter stars for trans stance

The multi-millionaire author hit out at stars who use their 'platforms to cheer on the transitioning of minors' after the release of the long-awaited Cass report into gender treatment in the UK.

So pleased she’s speaking out so openly now 😍

PriOn1 · 11/04/2024 06:47

She is so powerful when she speaks out. The pain she’s feeling must be echoed in almost all of us who have tried to change this. There was never going to be much pleasure in being found to be right and even now, though Cass is obviously going to have influence, I still feel there’s an incredible way to go before the rest is resolved.

Still, for all the frustration over women’s rights, I guess the sterilization of children remains the most pressing argument that needs to be won.

BottlingBurpsForGrandma · 11/04/2024 06:54

Yeah, like JK I'm heartbroken. As the trans train accelerated I wondered, at times, whether I was (and in some ways wanted to be!) wrong. All those poor kids left living a half-life.

HumphreyCobblers · 11/04/2024 06:55

I just read this. She is so eloquent and accurate.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 11/04/2024 07:02

I think her message to the Harry Potter actors was very powerful. Whenever I read clickbait artices commentary on this it's always framed as an argument between her and them, using phrases such as "controversial views" and quoting various tweets for the millionth time.

When you read the comments it's typically stuff like:

"They wouldn't be famous without her."
"So what? They don't owe her anything."
"I don't agree with her views but she is entitled to hold them."
"Good on them for calling out bigotry."
"They're spoiled brats."
"JK Rowling is just saying what all sensible adults think."
"I don't like her books but she is right about this."

She's making it clear that this isn't a spat between her and them. It's about the fact that they openly supported macabre experiments being performed on vulnerable children and dismissed whistleblowing as bigotry. And it's not her they need to answer to, but the victims of all this.

Stickyricepudding · 11/04/2024 07:05

Any word from #bekind Watson, Radcliffe etc al?

PatatiPatatras · 11/04/2024 07:16

We were all young and stupid once... being young and stupid on world stage must be difficult.
And having encouraged actual physical harm to people who adored you is a hard thing to live.

It will take a lot of bravery and courage for them to cross that golden bridge. They may yet. Give them time.

They're not that young though, they're all in their mid 30s.

FrancescaContini · 11/04/2024 07:49

Yes, @MissScarletInTheBallroom I think they’re definitely old enough to know better when publicly and repeatedly slagging off the woman behind their stardom.

afternoonoflife · 11/04/2024 08:00

She’s being quite gracious too, because iirc EW and RG did make it about her, with RG making personal comments about her being like a racist aunt or similar.

DialSquare · 11/04/2024 08:21

I hope they are squirming so bad it hurts.

I hope they are squirming so bad it hurts.

Sadly I doubt they will be.

DialSquare · 11/04/2024 08:27

I suspect you are right.

PatatiPatatras · 11/04/2024 08:59

Ahem. I consider 30s to be young and stupid myself.

Squirms, looks around for validation. Takes off in flight... shouting I'm right though.

Itsagasgasgas · 11/04/2024 11:19

I think this is another decisive move disguised as a casual one. This is the first time I have heard 🫅JK Rowling say anything which could look like she is critical of the galling behaviour of Radcliffe, Watson and Grint.

By doing this she is potentially moving this ‘dry’ medical report into the realm of celebrity gossip and widening its influence, where people love a good ‘spat between celebs’.

She is so, so clever and considered. Never a word wasted or wrongly placed, always timed to perfection.

She is a rapier of a woman, to the TRAs' bludgeons. Magnificent.

I think her message to the Harry Potter actors was very powerful.

I agree and am delighted that she's finally been able to tell them that they're unpleasant squits, sadly dead to her.

She's making it clear that this isn't a spat between her and them. It's about the fact that they openly supported macabre experiments being performed on vulnerable children and dismissed whistleblowing as bigotry. And it's not her they need to answer to, but the victims of all this.

Well, quite. They'll never admit that they're wrong, of course.

Sharing this here in case (like me) anyone else didn't realise that the story had evolved from the less direct tweet quoted above and hasn't clicked on the Mail link. I Love JK.

OnandOnforHoursandHours · 11/04/2024 12:45

Oh.

I'm strangely saddened by that. I do think forgiveness of the many who got carried away by their own righteousness is going to be needed.

I think her point is not that they cannot be forgiven, but that the forgiveness is not hers to give.

JeannieDark · 11/04/2024 12:53

@TimesChangeAgain Yes I agree, I think she's saying it's not her who needs to forgive them.

OnandOnforHoursandHours · 11/04/2024 13:56

That would make sense.

Absolutely! She's a genius!
