Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Education can challenge sexist stereotypes and behaviours before ideas and incidents escalate - NEU

“Schools and colleges are in a unique position to be able to have influential conversations about topics around sexism and gender stereotypes, from a young age. Education can challenge these stereotypes and behaviours before ideas and incidents escalate.

“By trying to tackle sexism across the life of a school or college, both students and staff can be safer, and empowered to support each other.

“It is positive that teachers have been using and see value in the NEU ‘It’s Not OK’ toolkit for preventing sexism and sexual harassment.

“The rise of sexist and violent ideas online is problematic and young people are very influenced by their peers and the content driven by algorithms. Greater regulation of tech companies and quicker action on removing harmful content is needed.

“Helping young people interrogate the motivation and appeal of online figures can help students to think critically about what they see and increase confidence in reporting harassment.

“The NEU wants to see a curriculum for the modern age with a greater focus on social learning and active citizenship.

“The NEU is also working alongside other unions and the TUC on their programme on ‘Tackling sexual harassment – Building preventative cultures within the trade union movement’.”

This is in response to a motion at the NEU Conference

Anyone believe schools can do anything about the increase in sexism when children pay more attention to what they see and hear online?

Teachers fear sexism is on the rise in schools because of harmful content on children's phones.

Well I would say that schools are in part driving this with their adherence to gender ideology. They promote outdated stereotypes, tell girls that they have no right to dignity, privacy, fair sports, safety or even words to describe themselves. How can they prevent misogyny when they peddle it

The old leadership of the NEU were I believe starting to see the chaos unleashed by unhinged transactivism in schools and were becoming more cautious and measured in their approach to this issue.
I'm not sure that the current activist in charge has any such insight into safeguarding and the complexities of telling children their bodies are flawed but changing sex will cure them 🙄

They don't as evidenced by this

The National Education Union (NEU) passed a motion vowing to 'campaign and lobby the Government' to scrap the guidance.

The fact that people who are too stupid to see the link between a catastrophic rise in misogyny and thousands of young girls trying to identify out of womanhood and the inherent sexism is an ideology that says if you like pink and make up and
being subservient you must be female are in charge of teaching in this country makes me want to scream into the void for eternity!

AuntieValsRicePudding · 06/04/2024 09:43

Where does Amanda Martin fit into all this? If Penny Mordaunt loses her seat in Portsmouth (North), it may well be to Amanda Martin (Labour activist and NEU big cheese).

Would that be an 'out of the frying pan ...' situation?

teawamutu · 06/04/2024 10:48

The unions are among the drivers of misogyny (the new, woke kind) IME. Maybe look in the mirror, folx?

anyolddinosaur · 06/04/2024 13:07

Some schools are currently actively promoting gender stereotypes. Supporting the trans gender and fighting tougher trans rules illustrates their misogyny

IwantToRetire · 06/04/2024 17:04

Whilst (obviously because I am on FWR) I recognise the damage being done to children in schools by the affirmative process many have adopted, dont ever forget the TRAs thrive because of the existing and far wider spread of MRAs and their ideology.

To just comment that this is just part of the trans agenda is a huge diservice to the many school girs who have campaigned about the relentless sexism and acts of violence by boys of their own age.

Far more boys are influeced by the likes of Andrew Tate than Stonewall.

Far more girst have suffered because of the likes of Andrew Tate than Stonewall.

Not to acknowledge the deep damage being done to young women by predatory males inspired by incel culture that think feminism has gone to far seems really strange on a board that is Feminism and Women's Rights.

There is a real danger that this board will become less relevant if it becomes (which MNHQ tried to do and failed) a single issue campaign.

Even if for some trans ideology is their priority, it doesn't mean that other pre-esxisting sexist cultures aren't also important.

For those who only want to talk about trans issues in schools as I said in my OP you could read Motion 26 and start a thread on that!!

Trans ideology would never have taken hold if that faight against feminism has suceeded.

It is because men and their society continue to disrespect women that the TRA agenda took hold.

If men and society respected women they would never have jumped on the bandwagon of trans ideology.

And for them (men) more importantly by denying that there is actually a sex class of women oppressed by a sex class of men, this is an escape route because they can say there is no sex class because sex doesn't exist.

I'd been reassured repeatedly by people who know him that the new leadership did understand all the issues and was 'on side.'

I am struggling to see how after the shit show of this conference. I'd also been told it's so bad in the neu it was near impossible to have a hint of an opposing view. Even so.

How on earth can you tackle sexism and misogyny in schools whilst promoting sexism and misogyny in schools via trans ideology ?

They're so open minded their brains really have fallen out.

WarriorN · 06/04/2024 19:18

Oh and they're banging on about menopause now; which is great but again, how can you support a movement that seeks to induce menopause in young girls?

WarriorN · 06/04/2024 19:21

A teaching union will campaign against government plans to force schools to tell parents if their child changes gender.

Members of the <a class="break-all" href="https://archive.is/o/ZAfNd/www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/03/30/teachers-union-neu-blame-israel-palestine-war/" rel="nofollow" target="blank">National Education Unionn (NEU) agreed on Friday to oppose what teachers described as the “compulsory ‘outing’” of pupils to parents.

Teachers at the union’s annual <a class="break-all" href="https://archive.is/o/ZAfNd/www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/04/04/teaching-union-is-hostile-environment-for-jews-claims-retir/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">conference in Bournemouthh also said they would campaign against a ban on any aspect of <a class="break-all" href="https://archive.is/o/ZAfNd/www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/04/05/transgender-gender-transition-schools-stonewall-lgbt/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">“social transitioningg” in schools, which could include allowing children to <a class="break-all" href="https://archive.is/o/ZAfNd/www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/04/04/parent-daughter-changed-gender-name-pronouns-west-country/" rel="nofollow" target="blank">change their pronounss or use lavatories or changing facilities of the opposite sex.

The motion, approved by the majority of delegates at the conference, was drawn up in response to draft <a class="break-all" href="https://archive.is/o/ZAfNd/www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/04/04/primary-schools-equality-trans-policies-government-guidance/" rel="nofollow" target="blank">government guidancee on gender-questioning children.

The long-awaited advice states that <a class="break-all" href="https://archive.is/o/ZAfNd/www.telegraph.co.uk/education-and-careers/schools/" rel="nofollow" target="blank">schoolss in England should not accept all requests for social transitioning and should involve parents in any decision that is made.

Speaking in favour of the campaign against the guidance, Kathryn Barton, an NEU member, said she knew of a seven-year-old who had transitioned during the summer holiday and said that “not a single pupil” had a problem with it.

Ms Barton said: “They [the pupils] very easily changed his pronouns that they used to refer to him.”

She added: “This [government] guidance instructs schools to make parents aware if a child requests a name or pronoun, except in the very rare situation where informing parents might raise significant risk of harm to the child.

“It’s OK if it’s not a significant risk, that they are just going to be verbally abused. It’s absolutely absurd.”

‘Regressive trash’

Midge Lowe, a teacher from Doncaster, said the Government’s draft guidance was “regressive trash” and said teachers must campaign for it to be withdrawn.

She said: “This guidance, refusing to acknowledge the existence of trans children, is a risk, is harmful. Refusing to allow a cautious but early social transition is harmful and encourages risk-taking behaviour in later stages of life where it presents much greater harm.”

No delegates at the conference spoke against the motion, which also stated that “schools, colleges and external providers should not change or remove <a class="break-all" href="https://archive.is/o/ZAfNd/www.telegraph.co.uk/lgbt/" rel="nofollow" target="blank">LGBT++ inclusive policies or curriculum content as ‘knee-jerk’ response to political rhetoric”.

WeMeetInFairIthilien · 06/04/2024 20:05

How can schools fight sexism and stereotypes, when they use resources like "My Dad's a she"? Where being a woman is just about having long hair, wearing dresses and painting your nails a pretty colour.

And when questioned, state that they don't promote one ideology above another (GI Vs GC), and that their resources are "well reviewed" by who??

allthevitamins · 06/04/2024 20:11

But we can't protect what we can't describe...?

AuntieValsRicePudding · 06/04/2024 23:41

Dame Dr Hilary Cass's review will be published in a few days.

I hope other papers pick this up very soon and the teaching unions finally get telt.

The article is behind a paywall but you can cut and paste the URL into archive . ph (lose the spaces) - and there's a separate thread about it on this board just started tonight.

This. The cognitive dissonance must be off the charts at NEU.
