Ian Hislop and Helen Lewis go head-to-head about Scottish hate crime law. An interesting listen. Helen gets it, but Ian and the other male host are appalled at JKR's 'misgendering' and defensive of Monroe Bergdorf in particular.

To me it seemed clear Bergdorf made the list for something specifically said, a deft example of exposing the ideology rather than Bergdorf's very existence, which is what they seem to think was being called into question.

Private Eye has its moments and obviously some very good GC cartoons but this explains why they have never really got stuck in. Still a blind spot for some.

Another News Agent podcast proving the point. Beams and motes Ian, beams and motes.

Interesting to listen. These two condemn ‘bogus representations of the self’ - they say ‘we’ve failed’ b/c ‘they get away with it’. Be fantastic to hear them apply the same logic to the acceptance of men who self-identify as women.

The whole tone there is very telling.

I'm not saying anything about Nigel Farage's politics, but him having gone to Dulwich College is not as interesting as the fact that he didn't go to university. He left school young to go onto the Metal Exchange, which might be part of the City but it's somewhere that's defined by incredibly pressured work and high risk. It's not a feather bedded part of the City.

The public schoolboys who went to Oxbridge and high status careers invariably see Farage as basically a barrow boy. Someone who might have come from privilege but chose to be low class.

There's an awful lot of unexamined class work in that little clip. I wonder who would be acceptable as an avatar for working class voters.

And as with class, so with sex.

Rory fawns to most male interviewees and guns for female ones. Something about his own view of his place in the pecking order.

He supports feminism in that he accepts that some women are as clever as clever men like him, and is happy to admit them to his elite circle. That’s as far as it goes.

Yes - and this is very much a boys’ public school attitude. But the women will never be part of the inner circle if they let themselves down by doing conventionally female things such as becoming mothers.
