JKR - Private Eye podcast

Ian Hislop and Helen Lewis go head-to-head about Scottish hate crime law. An interesting listen. Helen gets it, but Ian and the other male host are appalled at JKR's 'misgendering' and defensive of Monroe Bergdorf in particular.

To me it seemed clear Bergdorf made the list for something specifically said, a deft example of exposing the ideology rather than Bergdorf's very existence, which is what they seem to think was being called into question.

Private Eye has its moments and obviously some very good GC cartoons but this explains why they have never really got stuck in. Still a blind spot for some.

28 Oct 2022 — After 36 years of writing jokes and skewering the dodgy, Francis Wheen is retiring as deputy editor of Private Eye.

Thanks, I'd missed that. Shame. I saw him at a WPUK meeting once.

I haven't listened either (sorry) but I wonder if IH is pretending the whole GC situation is trivial to cover his back. The fact that Private Eye and Have I Got News For You never attempt to discuss the idiocy of men pretending to be women and infiltrating women's spaces is due, I would say, to cowardice and the fact that so much of the media and the press are captured or pretending to be captured by the trans ideology.

I agree - it’s cowardice on the part of Ian Hislop and he’s frightened of being cancelled. Given that Private Eye makes a big deal about not being frightened of anyone, it’s pretty pathetic.

Runningupthecurtains · 05/04/2024 12:23

Why do they never follow the line of thought to it's logical conclusion? If MB is a woman because MB is 'pretty' and blokes 'fancy' MB then conversely 'ugly' women they don't 'fancy' MUST not be women, regardless of how they identify. But they don't embrace the woman they would put in that category as men, they dismiss and ignore them as beneath contempt.

RethinkingLife · 05/04/2024 12:26

Given the number of high-profile men who publicly assert TWAW, I'm baffled as to why using correct sex facilities is still touted as a safety issue.

Instead of using women as bodyguards or using incorrect sex facilities as a refuge from men, I've never understood why TW don't gather male allies around them as bodyguards to use appropriate sex facilities. Normalise the use of correct sex facilities without so much as a side-eye from other users.

Expand the bandwidth of what it means to be a man. That would be more likely to shift society.

The irony being that Bergdorf has had far more surgery that Paula Yates ever had to create his 'look'.

DS went to the same school as MB and I have seen photos of the latter as a youngster, aged 12 or so. He was a nice looking lad, but most definitely a boy, cheeky grin and all.
My DS is still very recognisable now as an adult from his school photos -- MB is totally different, not a trace of that young boy remains.
They have clearly had very extensive work done. And although I've not seen in the flesh I suspect photos have probably been heavily filtered and photoshopped.

On TV, (Celebrity Gogglebox) there's lot of head tilting, hair swishing, 'feminine' hand waving, seated, -- all very careful and performative.

MadraUisce · 05/04/2024 12:30

There was a programme about him showing only a few of the surgeries he has had - he had facial feminisation surgery on brow, jaw etc.

CorruptedCauldron · 05/04/2024 12:34

Men get confused by prettiness. Jordan penis pianist is another one who has caused confusion because he has a pretty face. Jason Manford made a fumbling tweet about how there’s no way Jordan is a man. Meanwhile Ian Hislop is a misogynistic little oik basking in the glow of smug male privilege. That Paula Yates clip should rightly haunt him.

Ta bron orom with men & their mickies. Can’t do fadas!

ApocalipstickNow · 05/04/2024 12:37

I suspect Ian Hislop’s stance is also affected by the (rightly) sympathetic treatment Private Eye gave whilst covering the story of a transwoman who had committed suicide after press intrusion some years ago. I guess that has stayed with him.

Was that the 2019 one at Bloomsbury Baptist Church? Where Maya had her first taste of public speaking post the stramash with CGD (iirc)?

It's a bit like beer goggles, misogyny makes women that men find unattractive invisible to them. Personally, I use that knowledge to sneak in and steal their wallets! Also their shoes, because, why not?

Edited just to try that function

I know, but it's the mental disconnect between bloke who looks like a woman = woman, woman who looks like a man = woman of no value. Why are we expected to welcome MB but no men are inviting masculine looking women into the golf club, boardroom etc.
It's the lack of consistency they use to split people into men/ less than men. We are expected to accept all the rejects from masculinity but also keep those women they deam unfeminine. It's the heads I win, tails you lose nature of the (lack of) thought from supposedly intelligent people that I find difficult to swallow.

I think liberal men can get their head round the idea that some men may abuse the system for their own benefit more than the idea that women need to be able to be a separate class from men.

They can see that isla bryson may have found trans for an easier time in prision, but cant see any benefit a man might have just for identifying as a woman and being a media personality.

So space is needed to avoid extreme physical threats, but not for anything else.

Given how bbc panel shows had to be made to include women, youd think hislop of all people would understand that its far more complex than that.

Excellent point. The idea of "safe spaces" vs "single-sex spaces".
And then they would mess up the safe spaces by allowing men into them.

What a ripping wheeze!

I might start doing that, too.

Wallets to The Cause, shoes to the Oxfam Shop.

EpicPineapple · 05/04/2024 15:52

Rich man mansplains women’s rights to women. Shocker.

Perfect!

Though pub on the corner ("The Unburnt Witch And Her Spiteful One-Eyed Cat") is even better . . . they are more discreet about <koff> various wallet and credit card exchanges there . . .

That’s very disappointing, I’ve always had a lot of time for Hislop. I’d hoped his run-in with Brand - who rightly handed him his arse - was a temporary moment of tone-deafness.

But it just goes to show that many men, even those who would pride themselves on their liberal values and their intelligence, just DO NOT GET IT.

I was talking to a woman recently who described her experience walking round a park in the evening with her husband. There was a group of youths and her husband couldn’t understand why she was bothered. She asked him how he felt in the situation (which was that he’d seen them but they weren’t bothering them), then described how she felt: she’d clocked them, she was concerned and keeping an eye on them, they got closer and the youths got louder and more lairy and she was on high-alert, they passed by and the situation calmed down and she was less anxious, they got home and she relaxed.

His mind was blown at the idea that women would feel like that. Men just DO NOT GET IT.

OnandOnforHoursandHours · 05/04/2024 16:15

Men get confused by prettiness.

Yup.

DH, last week, a propos of the Scots hate crime bill: 'But there's a transwoman in the bass section of our choir. You can't tell at all that she isn't a woman, so is there really a problem with using the women's loos? Really?'
Me: ''Sings bass, you say.'
DH: 'Um?'
Me: 'If I hear a bass voice in the loos... why would I assume that's a woman?'
DH: 'But she's got, you know, a nice, er, figure...' [trails off and goes to make tea]

Emotionalsupportviper · 05/04/2024 16:18

@SidewaysOtter

Decent men have no idea at all how much on the defensive women have to be.

When Wayne Cozens hit the headlines, we were watching a documentary about the way his past crimes were brushed under the carpet. At one point it was mentioned how he had exposed himself to a girl in a coffee shop.

Mr Viper said "She should have thrown the coffee at him."

He was quite taken aback when I said to him "Really? You have no idea how shocking, how fucking terrifying it is to be alone with a man who is exposing himself to you. You are alone and vulnerable. This is a man you don't know. He's twice your size. He's doesn't care if anyone comes in and sees him - that's how much confidence he has. And you don't know him - how violent he is - what his reactions might be. You could throw that coffee over him and he could leap over that counter and beat the shit out of you. He could kill you. You don't logically work this out - your brain does it in a split-second and you freeze with terror. You know you're letting him get away with it , but you just take the line of least resistance because it's the safest thing to do in the circumstances."

I'm afraid I really went to town on poor Mr Viper - it wasn't his fault - he's just a bloke.

(But I've been there, been pretty badly assaulted, and I was so frightened I couldn't even scream. My throat just closed up. And shameful as it may be, even though it was 50-odd years ago, I'm just as frightened now.)

Edit for the usual autocarrot bollox

It was WPUK. I was at that meeting. Also had Meghan Murphy and Selina Todd.

Francis Wheen may have been at the more recent WPUK one on the media too.

Ian Hislop doesn't care about half the population. Huge misogynist.

Huge disappointment. I personally make a point not to watch programmes with him on anymore.
