JKR - Private Eye podcast

Ian Hislop and Helen Lewis go head-to-head about Scottish hate crime law. An interesting listen. Helen gets it, but Ian and the other male host are appalled at JKR's 'misgendering' and defensive of Monroe Bergdorf in particular.

To me it seemed clear Bergdorf made the list for something specifically said, a deft example of exposing the ideology rather than Bergdorf's very existence, which is what they seem to think was being called into question.

Private Eye has its moments and obviously some very good GC cartoons but this explains why they have never really got stuck in. Still a blind spot for some.

Good lord. That's gross. What a horrible, bitter little man.

Just a reminder of Jo brand on HIGNFY

hislop knows full well men aren’t women but because it’s something that is primarily disadvantaging women he thinks it must be by definition trivial and not worthy of his manly intellect because after all it’s only women isn’t it

Unfortunately I think that you are right.

Such a shame.

Actually IH reminds me of a colleague (male of course). Incredibly intelligent but uses that intelligence to verbally shut down other people for no other reason that they don't agree with them. And the other people happen to be mostly women 🤔 My male colleague is now at the stage where no woman wants to work with him.

illinivich · 05/04/2024 08:54

I think liberal men can get their head round the idea that some men may abuse the system for their own benefit more than the idea that women need to be able to be a separate class from men.

They can see that isla bryson may have found trans for an easier time in prision, but cant see any benefit a man might have just for identifying as a woman and being a media personality.

So space is needed to avoid extreme physical threats, but not for anything else.

Given how bbc panel shows had to be made to include women, youd think hislop of all people would understand that its far more complex than that.

VaddaABeetch · 05/04/2024 08:59

I agree that the more ‘attractive’ the trans woman the more some men are willing to believe that the TW has some sort of womanly essence.

i think it’s as simple as the men are attracted in some way to the TW are thinking with their mickey & believe they manly men that they are could never be attracted to a bloke.

Like the judge in the Tara Hudson case, whose comments gave the impression that he found the long blonde wig and silicon implants highly persuasive evidence of womanhood.

I think I’m remembering the name correctly.

'Pet interests' - do they mean women's rights? Or freedom of speech? I understand PE don't care much about the former, but you'd think the latter would be of interest.

Quite.

Have just listened back and the context was a joke about JKR joining the Garrick Club, where it would be funny because she could just "bore on about her favourite pet subjects" and fit right in.

A throwaway gag, but a depressingly revealing one.

MB only got away with doing 2 unacceptable things (taking a female specific role AND breaking an important safeguarding practice.

I've seen this a few times, but can't seem to find anything about the safeguarding fail. Could you tell me what it was? Thanks.

Abhannmor · 05/04/2024 09:13

PE is very useful but it is very male . And very posh essentially . Francis Wheen and Paul Foot RIP used to tackle serious stuff. The others were the ' sneerers'.

They used to have a section called 'Wimmin' showcasing 'loony feminist nonsense' which admittedly could be funny sometimes. I'm not sure Butler was ever in it. Loony but unfunny perhaps.

Still no matter how pretty MB is , he is a bloke. And feminists shouldn't pick on blokes you see. I'm afraid that's as deep as Hislop goes.

Helen Lewis gets all the issues and has been speaking up for a long time, but she also doesn't want to admit any affinity with the likes of us. She is very sneery about KJK (who has made more impact than a thousand HL articles ever could) and sneery about this board (despite the impact it has had in helping grassroots women get organised and get funded). Check out a recent Blocked and Reported episode with her about Terf island.

I watched that episode live. I’ve despised Ian Hislop ever since.

The irony being that Bergdorf has had far more surgery that Paula Yates ever had to create his 'look'.

I watched that episode live. I’ve despised Ian Hislop ever since.

It was all of them. Aside from whoever was sitting next to Ian Hislop, who just cowered. Four men repeatedly talking about a woman's breasts to her obvious discomfort, despite her asking them openly to stop.

What utter, utter shits.

ApocalipstickNow · 05/04/2024 09:31

There will have to be a point when men like this realise that if they accept the highly reworked constructed transwomen as being women because they pass then they have to accept all the others as well.

Or none. It will be interesting to see how anyone justifies both Bergdorf and Izzard as being women.

(There’s probably something interesting about sexism and constructions of femininity/beauty to be found here as well, just what do these men consider being a woman to be? And is this at root of the “that lesbian/old woman/athletic woman looks like a man (because I wouldn’t fancy her)” school
of misogynistic thought?)

bluecomputerscreen · 05/04/2024 09:43

the irony is that harry potter is full of institutional capture and the danger of it.
and how hard it is to go against it.

but it's only a silly children's book isn't it

RoyalCorgi · 05/04/2024 09:45

Hislop is a "reasonable man" - like Louis Therous and Jon Ronson and Adam Buxton and all the rest (see Victoria Smith's article: https://thecritic.co.uk/the-sadness-of-sceptical-man/) who just thinks that if only women were nice and reasonable and could stop being so extreme we could all just come to a compromise with the trans activists. Why do we have to bang on about our rights in that hysterical, irrational, womanly way so much? Why can't we just be clever and reasonable like men?

The sadness of Sceptical Man | Victoria Smith | The Critic Magazine

Poor Freddie de Boer. It must be annoying to be a self-styled voice-of-reason type who’s thrown his lot in with trans activism — on the basis that it’s “kind” to do so — only to have trans activists…

Yes Hislop was very disparaging about JKR's work.

NonCrimeHakeIncident · 05/04/2024 10:08

I would like these men to be presented with a picture of MB happily posing with MB’s meat and two veg out, alongside a glam photo of MB’s face. And then see if they still fawn and think we must always use female pronouns for this poor, misunderstood yet beautiful woman.

Propertylover · 05/04/2024 10:35

What a lot of people (men) have missed is that it was a list of 10 misogynistic men who don’t believe a girl/woman has a right to say no.

IH et al are also misogynistic men so I think part of their response may be driven by NAMALT hence his dismissing TW prisoners as a very small number.

Jellycats4life · 05/04/2024 11:13

A wise Mumsnetter referred to HL’s stance on gender ideology as “slippery” and I’ve never forgotten it, because it’s so apt.

How an otherwise very intelligent woman, who wrote THE piece on social contagion a few years back, can still say TWAW (maybe not so ironically, I don’t believe I’ve ever heard her say TMAM) I don’t know.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 05/04/2024 11:47

StripeySuperNova · 05/04/2024 12:03

On Have I Got News For You, Ian Hislop made a joke about the government making a law that declares that Rwanda is safe and therefore Rwanda is safe. He likened it to making a law that a dog is a cat. He knew it was preposterous. And yet... GRA.

I wonder how many trans rapists and murderers women in women's prisons would be needed for Ian to consider the issue significant?
