I do YouGov talk topics from time to time, today's chat is on the new hate crime and public order (Scotland) act.
Not a lot of support for ScotGov on this.... in fact I've hardly seen such agreement that the legislation is disgraceful.

Will Scotland’s new Hate Crime Act make for a more tolerant society?

Can laws stop hate speech?

Sory, that's not a good link. It wants you to sign up to YouGov.

I’ve signed up and completed the survey. Definitely not a popular piece of legislation (no surprise there…) judging by the results.

It’s still live so these aren’t the final results…

Aside from anything else this is gutting and filleting the intended purpose of hate crime laws. Its turned them into a stupid weapon to be abused for grievance.

I'm not sure about the underlying reasoning or ethics of hate crime at all; so far they certainly seem to be having an opposite effect to what was intended if it was, as Yousaf said, making the country more pleasant.

(No-one is assigned a gender at birth)
misses point

It’s also a needlessly confusing question!

I missed the exact same point!

Gosh, YouGov seems quite gender critical, doesn't it?

I have very frequently taken them to task for their confusion over sex and gender
In fairness its probably the fault of the people commissioning the research but hopefully it all gets passed back to them (along with the fact that 'other' genders are going to be over-represented because of people like me who have a sex but no gender)

JanesLittleGirl · 03/04/2024 21:51

Completely missing the point but what does 'wolly' mean?

It’s a misspelling of woolly.

ArabellaScott · 03/04/2024 21:59

It's a cross between woolly and wally. Like a dim-witted sheep.

mrshoho · 03/04/2024 22:10

How this waste of space law was ever passed must surely be questioned and picked over now. So much of it appears (thankfully) to be unenforceable so wth was the point of it? This is a brand shiny new piece of legislation where much of it is impossible to uphold. The fact that we've got laws going back hundreds of years that make more sense and are still relevant makes this even more pathetic.

Yeah but I prefer @ArabellaScott s explanation.

If those results are representative of Scottish opinion I can't wait for the next elections in Scotland.
