James O'B is hosting a phone in now about the Scottish hate crime law and JKR.

He is framing it as an issue of affording kindness to those who don't deserve it (eg sex offenders) as an unwanted but necessary consequence of affording kindness to those who do.

He seems oblivious to the issues relating to though policing.

In the past he has been very selective on who he lets on. So I'm not sure there is a chance of alternative views being aired.

He was so close to getting it by the end of his monologue but talked himself back round. He doesn't want to see it.

GiveHerEffervescence · 02/04/2024 12:36

He’s awful

FrontEnd · 02/04/2024 12:37

He's an absolute knob.

GeorgeOrwellsTurningGrave · 02/04/2024 12:40

I wouldn't give him the listernership. What a privileged tool he is.

Brainworm · 02/04/2024 12:43

I expect we'll have an hour of people discussing their distress as a result of being trans or a relative/friend. I expect what they share will reflect genuine challenges.

What he won't do is present compassionate people who can articulate the challenge of being expected to affirm other's self perception

JOB is terrible on this topic, I can't stand him but just caught the end of his show:

  • carefully selected callers ✅
  • sad voice (probably with head tilt) ✅
  • lack of critical thinking in the subject ✅
  • thinks a man can be a woman and you're mean if you say they can't ✅

He is married with 2 girls, presumably is happy for them to change with a transwoman (penis and all), and compete in sport against them etc etc.

Brainworm · 02/04/2024 13:38

I can't believe there was't a single caller offering a coherent explanation to fill him in.

In the future, he will say, I did many phone ins and no one explained, so you can't blame me for not having picked up on it.

He did seem a little bit more open today than with his past few phone ins. This was framed as 'I can't help thinking I am missing something because JKR is a decent and clever person'. I wonder if this is Phase 1 of taking more of a middle ground position?

With the attention coming from the Scottish bill, I would love to hear discussion move on to analysing what is happening when we do/don't use preferred pronouns and/or refer to people as their 'acquired gender'.

I wish they would openly explore what meaning people give when someone refers to a natal male as a woman. JOB's espoused position is that the meaning is that of 'being kind'. Do other people hear this think you are being kind, or do they think you believe it? What about the transwoman? Do they think you are being kind, or do they think you see them as a woman? Does it matter to them, or to you? What if it does?

I think JOB's typical audience would find such a discussion really interesting!

No, he's presenting himself as a, "More in sorrow than in anger" social commentator. Adopting the hateful bigot rhetoric would be self-evidently unreasonable so he's opted for this tactic.

Has he ever asked himself if it's possible that staff are screening out callers? In the same way as Tim Davie claimed to have never seen any complaints? And EDW's open letter that it's known that GI-influenced CS staff screened out consultation responses etc.

Trouble is James is a man affording kindness to male sex offenders at the expense of women and at no cost to himself. He doesn't appreciate how much women are already burdened with kindness, kindness that is mostly taken for granted or abused.

RethinkingLife · 02/04/2024 14:28

If James O'B had been interested in an informed discussion, there's a list of women he might have contacted. It's telling that he and his staff didn't.

Maya F, Allison B, Lucy Hunter-B, Helen J, Sonia S, Susan S, Joanna C, KJK, Rosie D…

This. With bells on. Or should it be balls?

God JOB really is the very worst a man in broadcasting can be. Odious misogynistic MF.

duc748 · 03/04/2024 01:23

I just started listening to that, and I got half-way through, to the point where JOB pretended not to understand what the well-known phrase, social contagion, meant, and I just thought, fuck off with all that!

QueenBitch666 · 03/04/2024 01:41

Hateful man 😡

Abccde · 03/04/2024 07:55

My reading of it.

He sounds as if he is trying hard to convince himself that it's ok for men to be in women spaces.

Most Tories think its not, so he has to have a different opinion.

His gut is telling him its wrong, he knows he would not want his daughter to share single sex spaces with these men. He is trying to convince himself that these are all males suffering with extreme gender dysphoria who have 'fully transitioned'. He is deliberately ignoring that those would have always have transitioned are a very small percentage now.

He can't have a women caller on, who is no longer goes for the gym, or stays at home in an abusive relationship because the refuge had a man in it. He can't have the young women on who no longer play the sport they love, because of a man self identifying into the female category. How could he argue against any of that? He couldn't. He know they are right he just can't say so because he is shit scared of the backlash. But he tries (very badly in my opinion) to play both sides. But the fact he only has callers from one side is telling. He was horrible ro KJK but she's an easy target and has said stuff that means he can push back. But he can't do it to the majority of us.

Anyways, I might be wrong, but I think it's more cowardice than genuinely believing that men can become women.

He deliberately excludes women's voices (unless they are trans supportive) in this area.

Trans activists are the ones most likely to use this law to silence others - overwhelmingly women - but the only women he had on had a trans child. That's not good journalism but it's the same every time. If he has someone from the 'other side' it will most likely be a man who is a bit of an idiot- never a compassionate, kind, well spoken women.

fiftyandfat · 03/04/2024 08:20

He has a really annoying way of pretending not to understand anyone, especially women, who disgree with his misogynistic views.

One PP has described JOB as 'hateful'.

In my experience, I'm always disappointed when someone with a self-proclaimed reputation for rationality develops a bias and cannot explore it. It's not an uncommon phenomenon (see 'skeptic' movement and humanists).

Profound regret and disappointment from me, nothing approaching stronger emotions.

Haven’t listened to LBC since Steve Allen left/ was fired. Pity he couldn’t have found a slot elsewhere. He was fab, just perfect at sparrow’s fart, heading into a 12 hour shift.
