London Mayoral election – voting as gender-critical

I’m voting in the London mayoral election on 2 May, and interested to know how others plan to vote.

I’m gender-critical and the only candidate I think I can vote for is Amy Gallagher, the former Tavistock whistleblower.

She’s SDP (ie relatively small minority party), so I guess won’t stand much chance of being elected. But a strong vote for her would signal a resurgence of the only party consistently against gender ideology (other than KJK’s new Party of Women, who are not standing in the mayoral election).

We’ve not yet had any information about the candidates beyond the names (& party affiliations, where applicable) of the 13 candidates, so it’s perhaps a wee bit early to decide?

Some info here, if it's up to date and reliable. I won't be voting for the man who wants all police officers trained to blue belt standard in Brazilian ju-jitsu.

I've never heard of her and can only find articles on her criticizing Critical Race Theory, and 'woke' ideology.

I'll be voting for Sadiq Khan.

There are videos of her 'standing up to woke' - such a tiresome phrase reminiscent of Lee Anderson.

Hmmm.. She's raising money on GoFundMe. From my perspective as a non-lawyer I would expect money raised for legal costs to be on Crowdjustice, which is better controlled. I will wait and see.

The SDP support GRCs and healthcare for transgender people. Britain First are a really, really gender critical party. Reform UK are gender critical but failed to fill in the correct paperwork.

Not in London but thanks for drawing attention to the SDP pledges on gender which I copy below. These seem very well thought out.

• POLICY PLEDGES:
• Transgender individuals wishing to change their legal sex should be allowed to do so. However, we support the continued necessity for medical gatekeeping in any legal change of sex marker. We oppose proposals that would allow someone to change their legal sex by self-identification only.
• We support segregation by biological sex in sport. Fair competition is not secured if male-bodied transgender athletes are permitted to compete in women’s sport and, in the case of contact sports, the risk of injury can increase significantly.
• We support segregation by biological sex in prisons and women’s refuges in order to safeguard the safety and privacy of natal females. Separate prisons or prison accommodation should be provided for transgender citizens to ensure their safety and privacy.
• Healthcare spending and resources for gender dysphoric individuals, including long-term psychological intervention, should be provided at sufficient levels. Physical or drug-based medical treatments for gender dysphoria should be prohibited for anyone under 18 years of age.
• We support the retention of biological sex and gender identity as distinct categories in public sector data gathering such as crime statistics, poverty metrics or public health research.
• We support the use of plain English for discussions of biological sex in health and reproductive care.

GRCs are immaterial if spaces, sports and services are separated by biological sex 🤷‍♀️

Under the SDP policy the only practical difference will be that trans people with a GRC will be able to use slightly different words in a civil wedding ceremony to trans people without a GRC and that their death certificates can reflect their GRC gender even if the family member registering the death doesn’t agree.

@Westfacing can I ask why re Sadiq Khan? To be clear this is a genuine question with no agenda. I’ve just so much bad I’m genuinely interested to hear something good. As I say, no agenda, real curiosity.

As far as I know, everyone supports healthcare for transgender people. If, however, we’re talking about body modification, it has to be evidence based, and a last resort not the first resort.

What is the definition of "really, really gender critical party"? What's the scale? Does it run from: "a little bit, to mild, to quite a bit, to really really", and then is there "raging" or does it stop after "really really"?

Tell me you don't have a clue what "gender critical" means without telling me you don't have a clue what gender critical means..

Fair question. Two brief thoughts:

1. Yes, I care about lots of other issues – including poverty, justice, human rights and the environment.

2. A party's views on gender ideology for me has become a bit of a litmus test. It indicates how they view freedom of speech and women's rights, how swayed they are by current fads, their understanding of truth etc.

Surely there are other equally pressing issues?
Would you not be voting for the candidate who proposes solutions for those? Child poverty, homelessness, NHS waiting lists, for example?
Shouldn’t choosing a candidate be looked at in the round rather than a single issue?

If people want to vote on a single issue, that's up to them. And there are very few issues more important than women and girls basic human rights.

Sorry, I disagree. Child poverty and homelessness are my priorities, whatever the sex of the person living with them.

I’m a 59 year old woman. I’m aware of having encountered 3 transgender people in my lifetime. I suspect my experience is common. The number of people whose lives are blighted by poverty and homelessness is vast.

I love how it's just women who get told to set aside their needs based on who they are. This sort of post would not be posted about any other group. We see it time and again.

Well that's your priorities. Other women have different priorities.

It's not about trans people per se. It's about men. MALES. I am sure you have come across more than 3 males in your lifetime and should know they don't belong in womens spaces.

Why do you feel the need to question OP's priorities?
