you are on holiday in Scotland and someone looks funny at you. Lucky you are in that caravan park

off to get some fish at the fish farm place someone misgenders you. Thank fuck for the fish farm

off to get some shopping and a Weegie calls you a bam pot. Thank god I am in East Kilbride shopping centre

thank you my Scottish government I feel so safe

Edited

Once again, I'm fucking embarrassed by the state of our government.

Everyone, the majority of the Scottish populace thinks this is just as fucking batshit bampot bollocks as everyone else does, only more so. We have to fucking live here!

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 13/03/2024 17:48

Are they Magic Mushrooms?

PurpleSparkledPixie · 13/03/2024 17:51

Have the people who will be taking down these reports been background checked? Could those who are on the sex offenders register be able to do this? Will they have those enhanced police checks (forgot name, brainfog) for those under 18yr needing to report? Who holds the original data especially if it's written down (for any reason).

If the complainant isn't comfortable reporting in a station or online to the police, what happens if the police want to take that report further?

So many questions 😱

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 13/03/2024 18:02

As a PP said, presumably this is going to be a GDPR nightmare, even if the reportee remains anonymous, presumably data will be held on the alleged perpetrator.

Morwenscapacioussleeves · 13/03/2024 18:08

I'm surprised that anyone who lives in the SNP's land of milk & honey can be surprised by this - this is 100% on brand 😩

MyLadyDisdainlsYetLiving · 13/03/2024 18:08

Fucking hell. I mean, I’ve visited the Stasi museum in Berlin and I’ve actually learned from history unlike some others in power.

Cosmosforbreakfast · 13/03/2024 18:08

Why on Earth are retail staff expected to deal with the outraged and offended because someone looked sideways at them?! Why can't people just report to 101 or even Crimestoppers? Just when you think ScotGov can't get any more ridiculous they go and outdo themselves. We're a complete laughing stock.

SoupDragonsFriend · 13/03/2024 18:21

And what happens if some bored crones with pointy hats be-ribboned in purple, white and green, or even some friends of Mark Thomas (see ) decide to test the new system by reporting to the police via the sex shop a hate crime of hearing something said in the sex shop that they found offensive? This could get very tricky.

FantasticElasticBand · 13/03/2024 18:29

Exactly Soup - what would happen if JKR walked in and to report the flowery prose she receives.

”computer says no”

ArabellaScott · 13/03/2024 18:30

Women are not protected. Only the people with special feels.

ArabellaScott · 13/03/2024 18:33

Oh, dear. Police Scotland is trending on Twitter and everyone's taking the piss.

Yes, someone could report you for looking at them a bit funny, you become the talk of the mushroom farm and, before you know it, it's all over the Cairngorms that you were arrested for harassing elderly Hungarian lesbians, or similar.

inkjet · 13/03/2024 18:45

What happens if you consider some of the items in the sex shop to be a hate crime? Will the staff still report it accurately?

Or maybe there’ll be an offer? Free fluffy handcuffs with every hate crime reported.

Are the any other crimes that you can report at your hairdressers or mushroomery? This is utterly mad.

IcakethereforeIam · 13/03/2024 19:05

Perhaps you could set up an account. A sort of disloyalty card.

Their website seems to be 'undergoing scheduled maintenance'. Could the site have crashed having already been inundated with crimes in advance of April Fools' Day? Has there been a run on the fluffy handcuffs offer?

JanesLittleGirl · 13/03/2024 19:11

Is this the sort of thing that Donald Dewar had in mind?

Oh, they learned. They saw the pertinent history books as an instruction manual rather than a cautionary tale.

On 1st April, Scotland will face Canada in the finals of the 'Most Mental Country in the Anglosphere' cup, and at this point it's too close to call.

Next season England will be hoping to get back into contention under the widely tipped Keir 'let's kill the old' Starmer.

Yes, explain this. People are being informed they can report crimes, any crime, presumably? But as long as it’s thought to have been motivated by hate? Burglary? Graffiti? Physical assault? Sexual assault? Why not those crimes if not motivated by hate? Why outsource the “hate” part when it probably needs more specialised assessment?

This is a defence lawyer’s dream. “You told the police story X, but only hours earlier you told Dennis at the sex shop counter story Y. Your story changed after your conversation with Dennis, did it not?”

EvelynBeatrice · 13/03/2024 20:30

Eh? And how are the reporting places supposed to obtain the name and address of the alleged perpetrator?

Will we see the sex shop staff or customers in the kebab shop performing a citizen's arrest on the person who tutted?!!

Or are they expecting the alleged perpetrator to hang around obligingly until police Scotland swing by.

Of course Scotland has a lot of security cameras - maybe they'll spend hours looking at security footage Confused

NumberTheory · 13/03/2024 21:13

I know sex isn’t included in the hate crime legislation, but religion, and therefore belief, is, isn’t it?

If so, does this mean that all the GC women in Scotland can go to Luke and Jack’s and report people who harass them on twitter for their beliefs, and Jack and Luke’s will have to take that report and pass it on to the police?

Because there’s something quite tempting about that, isn’t there?
