Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Young voices - some not allowed

My 15yo DD was invited by her school to go to a 'young voices' event. An event for children to share and discuss their views on a wide range of topics.
She was one of 8 from her school, many other schools attended with same numbers. Hundreds of pupils. She said there were many children their with pride pins etc on display.
She is gender critical and believes sex matters.
Basically her views were not allowed. She was shouted over by other pupils in the discussions and organisers did nothing.
They all had to write on a post it who their inspiration was, and pin in to a board. She put JKR. The board was being manned by the organisers. When she came back to the board her post it has been removed and placed on a 'hate' board alongside terrorist organisations etc.
She absolutely hated the day, said it wasn't 'young voices' at all, but 'young voices as long as you agree with us.'
She is petrified of being expelled/suspended/told off because of her views.

Any advice please on what to do?

I wanted to update you all, because we had a very positive result.

I copied, pasted and edited many of your very wise words on here (too many to name but I recall @MrsOvertonsWindow,@ErrolTheDragon, @Datun) and came up with a letter which I emailed to the school.

They took it very seriously. Hoy, and head of this event all involved. My letter was (names and pronouns (!ffs) removed and forwarded on.

My dd has received a letter back from the head of the organisers. Huge apologies to her, but also, action taken!! The company pulled in to run the lgbtq+ room will no longer be allowed to run it. They will all receive training on impartiality. The letter acknowledged that sex matters. (of course it blooming does, why are we even discussing this) .

Best of all for dd, she's moved on, feels she's made a difference, but can let it go now. (Thank you to the poster who detailed this isn't her fight, I passed that on). She also knows she can state sex matters at school and can't be bullied for these views.

Huge thank you to all who posted. Women rock. ❤️

Fantastic news - well deserved!

MarieDeGournay · 15/05/2024 10:14

Wow that's great news OP! And thank you so much for getting back to us to share it.

Your DD was always a star for raising the issue, but she's now a successful star who is responsible for making changes that will benefit others, and I hope she's feeling chuffed about that, she deserves to.
Many of us are multiples of 15 and haven't achieved what she has achieved.
Big praise to your good self too for pursuing it, but my cuppa is raised this morning to one heck of a brave 15 year oldStar!

BettyBooper · 15/05/2024 10:24

Well done to your DD (and you, for supporting her!).

Yay 🙌

ErrolTheDragon · 15/05/2024 11:18

Well done the pair of you! So glad you've got this resolved so well. Hopefully you've given the school and perhaps even the company involved considerable pause for thought.

ScrollingLeaves · 15/05/2024 11:31

That is wonderful. Well done to you
and your brave, very special daughter. Imagine standing up and speaking as an individual in the face of all that group-think ill will.

RimTimTagiTim · 15/05/2024 11:42

Well done to both of you.

WickedSerious · 15/05/2024 12:37

Really pleased to read this. I have been wondering how the story ended and hoping for a positive outcome. Thanks for taking the time to update us. And yay for you and your daughter.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 15/05/2024 13:08

That's a fantastic outcome OP. Well done to your daughter and to you for supporting her so intelligently.
The more parents wade in and challenge what's being done to children the better for all of them.

Your daughter is amazing, OP. Well done to her for having the courage of her convictions.

RedToothBrush · 15/05/2024 13:25

That's absolutely brilliant!

It will give your daughter so much confidence and self worth and willingness to challenge where appropriate in the future.

We NEED young women like her!

EdithStourton · 15/05/2024 13:30

Excellent, full marks to both of you!

lady69 · 15/05/2024 13:34
