Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Young voices - some not allowed

arethereanyleftatall · 12/03/2024 09:57

My 15yo DD was invited by her school to go to a 'young voices' event. An event for children to share and discuss their views on a wide range of topics.
She was one of 8 from her school, many other schools attended with same numbers. Hundreds of pupils. She said there were many children their with pride pins etc on display.
She is gender critical and believes sex matters.
Basically her views were not allowed. She was shouted over by other pupils in the discussions and organisers did nothing.
They all had to write on a post it who their inspiration was, and pin in to a board. She put JKR. The board was being manned by the organisers. When she came back to the board her post it has been removed and placed on a 'hate' board alongside terrorist organisations etc.
She absolutely hated the day, said it wasn't 'young voices' at all, but 'young voices as long as you agree with us.'
She is petrified of being expelled/suspended/told off because of her views.

Any advice please on what to do?

No advice, but imo your daughter is awesome.

And my spelling is terribul.

Flickersy · 12/03/2024 10:13

Hopefully she got lots of photos of her contribution on this "hate board"?

I'm not sure. I'll ask tonight. They weren't allowed phones though so I doubt it.

I'm not sure I understand this. Are you saying you don't believe me/her?

That’s disgusting, no respect shown to your daughter. I’m not sure what you can do, apart from praise her for standing up for her convictions and for women’s rights.

Ramblingnamechanger · 12/03/2024 10:16

Well done to your girl. This is a big problem when disagreement is seen as hate. She has done nothing wrong and if she is any sort of trouble I am sure you will be at her side. In the end she will be stronger, but I am sure will feel wobbly for a while. Hugs to you both

I don’t think she means that at all. She is supporting your daughter.

Who organised it (is "Young Voices" a thing, that I haven't heard of). How are they financed. Who do they get their training from.

PuttingDownRoots · 12/03/2024 10:20

So a person who ...

  • Donates millions to charities each year including for disabled children
  • has funded shelters for abused women
  • has ignited a love of literature in billions of children
  • who herself was a victim of abuse
  • who has released statements about how everyone should be able to present as they please

Is akin to a terrorist?
Not exactly good critical thinking there

The only thing I can find on Google is a choir event, which doesn't sound like what OP is talking about.

Yup.

And simultaneously mocking my spelling which entailed an edit.

Apologies if it landed badly.

arethereanyleftatall · 12/03/2024 10:22

Thank you everyone. I am wanting to show this thread to her in support because she is absolutely distraught. What a lesson to learn so young in how women are silenced.

Ah, I see @IcakethereforeIam .
My apologies, I didn't get it, because the spelling was edited to be perfect when I saw it. Thank you so much. I agree, she is.

Its ironic that JKR made her billions from witchcraft since she is basically the victim of a witch hunt.

arethereanyleftatall · 12/03/2024 10:24

I think you need to know the county to find it on google, and I'm loathe to give it as she wants to be anonymous.

The Suffragettes were told they were awful, hateful unwomanly creatures who should just shut up.

Yes, all of this. Who are these people? Why are they in schools with 15 year olds?

When she came back to the board her post it has been removed and placed on a 'hate' board alongside terrorist organisations etc.
What was the point of this board? Why was her pin moved, how did they justify that?
So many questions!
Pleae give a hint as to where you are. Your DD is anonymous.

arethereanyleftatall · 12/03/2024 10:29

I've found the website. It's 'youth voice' plus name of county.

This stuff drives me nuts.

At 15 she is entitled to her views. She should not feel at risk of exclusion from education because she has a view.

If she can could she speak to someone at school about the event and how it made her feel. She will know by now who is the right person in school to support her. And school should be aware of what kind of event their are sending the kids in for. Dreadful.

senua · 12/03/2024 10:32

Hi OP's DD. It's part of growing up, I'm afraid. Females are taught to #BeKind and act accordingly. After a few years of being trampled on by others who aren't being kind, females tend to find their inner anger. Welcome to the sisterhood!
You don't follow the herd, you are capable of critical thought. Get facts and figures on your side (legislation, legal cases, etc -ask your mum) and the school can't harm you.

WaterWeasel · 12/03/2024 10:32

It's outrageous OP. I imagine that your daughter will have had a very eye opening experience with this - not in a good way.
Tell her to stay strong - there is an army of women who feel the same way and they cannot silence us all. 💪

Peskysquirrel · 12/03/2024 10:34

Funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport? That one?

ErrolTheDragon · 12/03/2024 10:47

That's appalling.

I'd definitely want to talk to the school about this.

Her beliefs are legally protected since the Forstater ruling as being 'worthy of respect in a democratic society'. The organisers of this event are being exclusionary and suppressing free speech and open debate.

Without identifying you, is this the one organised by the county council. If so I think there may be some GC councillors who would be mighty interested in how this went. Particularly as the event I looked at suggested they influenced services. If you are not sure how to identify GC councillors a generic email to every councillor raising your concerns would get responses back from the ones who would take it further (and the others can just fuck off) Just BCC them all,
