Elon Musk and new pronoun rules on Twitter

PriOn1 · 02/03/2024 05:01

It seems that people on Twitter face being penalized again for correctly sexing people and using their original names.

The new rules were quietly introduced, and Musk originally said he was “looking into it.”

Now it seems he has caved, defensively claiming that it’s only for “repeated, targeted harassment”.

So much for free speech. I guess now he’s taken a load of money from people in return for a blue tick, extra words and increased visibility, he has decided to shaft them all again. Bizarre behaviour.

Anyone who purposely uses different pronouns to what the person uses is obviously an asshole, so not sure what the problem is?

I honestly have no idea why you'd purposely call someone different to what they call themselves. It's just rude. It's not nice in any situation ie not pronouncing someone's name correctly etc.

To quote Magdalen Berns, I’d rather be rude than a fucking liar.

Some men are sexually aroused by the act of forcing women to tell lies.

Giving them the power to penalize women who resist is to place additional power in the hands of bullies.

Anyone who claims they cannot see why that is a problem is supporting the bullying of women.

Yes, science is definitely "looney"
Do you think it's appropriate to use mental health slurs? Is that the right side of history now?

GoodOldEmmaNess · 02/03/2024 06:33

It does say "to address someone". In other words, it isn't requiring anyone to respect non-sex-based pronouns in general, just not to knowingly tweet at someone with sex-based pronouns that you know them to not want.

TBH, although I can see that it is annoying, this seems fair enough. Twitter is a horrible, aggressive place and no purpose (other than to make it more so) is served by knowingly tweeting at someone in this way.

People act like they are at war on Twitter, and "addressing" someone in this way often a skirmish in that war. Better not to do it. Not just for the recipient of the message, For ourselves too. Aggressive actions aren't cathartic. They reinforce anger, twist us up inside.
EDIT: At least, that's my understanding of "address". Perhaps they aren't speaking with precision here and mean something different. But, in any case, 'reducing visibility' is an unquantifiable punishment given the whole slew of visibility manipulation that is in play. Just one more turd in the sewer so to speak. Way better than santioning the tweeter.

PriOn1 · 02/03/2024 06:34

The only argument offered as to why it’s important that we should lie to appease people is you’re all looneys and assholes.

I’d like to say it’s odd to be lectured about politeness by someone who starts and ends with name calling, but it’s not.

Elon Musk is giving power to bullies like Tatonka, perfect demonstration.

I’m looking forward to the time when slurs about people with mental health issues are seen as as unacceptable as slurs directed towards anyone else.

Im not holding my breath.

You’re happy to use an outdated and offensive slur about people with mental health issues though?

ResisterRex · 02/03/2024 08:04

And if you won't be polite, face the consequences!

What are pronouns like? they’re like … https://fairplayforwomen.com/pronouns/

Pronouns are Rohypnol • Fair Play For Women

There’s a lot of chat around about pronouns right now. Specifically, ‘preferred’ pronouns. By which is usually meant, the pronouns a person would prefer.

It's rude - I won't borrow your other term - to control other people's speech and behaviours whether or not they have consented.

Particularly as it relies on 'be nice' and that softly softly coercion to then require calling someone like Tiffany Scott 'female' and let male people rape away on prison blocks and hospital wards, and that sadly is in NO way exaggeration.

It is not a game I consent to play. And it has reached a point where being purposefully truthful and explicit matters enormously for women, women's equality, rights, safety, child safeguarding and basic sanity in the press. Whether or not someone's going to be miffed or sad is no longer relevant unfortunately, we're long past that. And it was the TQ+ movement that chose to push us here.

Froodwithatowel · 02/03/2024 08:30

And as you enable them - under coercion - to live in their belief, they by return have no interest whatsoever in yours.

I do not consent to engage in a power exchange relationship. Particularly not with total strangers.

Because it's a lie. Humans can't change sex. It's compelled speech.

ClutchingOurBananas · 02/03/2024 08:32

The entire statement ‘uses different pronouns than a person uses for themselves’ is actually nonsensical.

I use the pronouns I and me for myself. As do we all.

Everything about the 2020s obsession with pronouns is about controlling how other people think and speak about you.

People should protest by only using the pronouns I and me to refer to everyone.

We don’t do it for another group, yet some people believe lying is appropriate for this group?

Why have some people given abusers the coercive power over society? And by that, I am not saying all trans people are abusers by the way.

How would one ‘address someone’ with the wrong pronouns? 🤔 U instead of you?

Completely agree. If you're repeatedly tweeting at someone using the wrong pronouns to intentionally wind them up / distress them, it is harassment and shouldn't be tolerated.

It actually says the problem is using different pronouns than they’d use for themselves.

I assume most of them use I/me/myself for themselves. So presumably everyone is being dreadful bigots by using second or third person pronouns. We should pedantically be referring to them using the pronouns they use for themselves.

Unless they’re weirdos that refer to themselves in the third person, I assume that’s I/me.

Usually you don’t address people in the third person though. And second person pronouns are gender neutral.

So the complaint is how people are talking about them, not how they’re addressing them personally.
