In the Telegraph today, sorry I can't do links, but at least he has definitely stated his side, though his reasoning is puzzling to me:

Pullman is hard to pigeonhole, and not everybody who agrees with his stand on freedom of expression will go along with his views in the great Terf vs Trans war (“I’m in sympathy with the trans side in this quarrel because I think that’s the side of the imagination, and I’m in favour of that.”)

Imagination and fantasy are fine in fiction.

In the actual material world we need to base everything on reality and fact.

Paradiddlediddle · 01/03/2024 15:56

TRAs have absolutely no imagination, so that’s weird. They can’t even begin to imagine that predatory men might use trans ness as a reason to enter women’s spaces, they can’t imagine mediocre men using it to encroach on women’s sports, they can’t imagine repressive regimes using it to “correct” homosexuality, they can’t imagine young women using it as an escape parachute from the mind fuck of
adolescence, and they can’t imagine inadequate men using it to get jobs reserved for women. None of that stuff could ever happen right?

theilltemperedclavecinist · 01/03/2024 15:57

He's on the side of the Magisterium. Really?

TheSlantedOwl · 01/03/2024 15:57

He’s on the side of the untrue, that’s all, and happy for untruth to oppress women. His position is men’s needs come first. He’s a crushing disappointment.

nauticant · 01/03/2024 15:57

Phil's advice: you can just reinstate missing body parts by imaging that they're back!

WomaninBoots · 01/03/2024 15:58

What a pompous twat.

Hsew · 01/03/2024 16:00

Ha! I think that’s a fairly ‘transphobic’ position actually. To suggest there is imagination involved in the trans position, and that reality might not actually agree with them.

theilltemperedclavecinist · 01/03/2024 16:04

The comments 😂

eg

Has he recognised his foolishness, misogyny and homophobia in falling for 'trans' ideology yet?

Theeyeballsinthesky · 01/03/2024 16:06

‘Pompous man with no skin in the game remains twat as before’ news flash

This is what I was going to say. He's pretty much said that trans people aren't who they say they are, it's just all in their imagination!

100%

of all the old man misogynists that have disappointed me he's one that disappointed me a lot.

Imagine suggesting that kids should be able to cut off their daemon & replace it without damaging them.

Ha! You're correct but they'll presumably choose to hear it as being artistic or something....& he's protected from any backlash by penis power anyway.

DeanElderberry · 01/03/2024 16:35

I never warmed to the man - found his books derivative, narrow-minded, and priggish, and am not at all surprised by this.

teawamutu · 01/03/2024 16:36

Sexist dickhead who identifies as a big thinker.

Still not over him informing me loftily that TWAW because Simone de Beauvoir.

I pointed out he'd clearly not read anything more than the fridge magnet. He did not deign to respond. Knobber.

IcakethereforeIam · 01/03/2024 18:57

Notice they have to put JKR's work in the headline to get the clicks. I quite enjoyed the Dark Materials but couldn't be doing with his other stuff.

The two latest Book of Dust novels are very much meh.

I think age is catching up with him.

I think I have the first one on kindle when it was 99p, I've not read it yet. My hopes weren't high.

Even for 99p I refuse to put any more money in the twatbadger's pocket.

I did actually download the Audible version of Amber Spyglass, but even though the DC adored the TV version and quite liked the first two books, they refused to finish it (the mulefas tipped them over the edge).

His seething jealousy of JKR is quite amusing though.

turbonerd · 01/03/2024 19:43

I really enjoyed His Dark Materials. Both the books and the latest series.
The film was no good, despite having Daniel Craig in it. Sorry, Daniel.

But why would trans = more imagination?
And why is he dissing JKR’s Potterverse?

Douche.

popebishop · 01/03/2024 19:48

Calling "the trans side" as "the side of the imagination", as a compliment, is genuinely very hilarious on several levels. Well done that man!

WickedSerious · 01/03/2024 19:57

What a prick.

And not enough imagination to see the possibility that men can have widely differing preferences and characteristics, but still be men (and obv the same for women). Imagine a world where men were allowed to like pink and sparkly, allowed to express their emotions, allowed to not want to be leaders, but still be recognised & respected as men. Shame Pullman can’t imagine that

Cancelledcurio · 01/03/2024 20:49

Oh he's just a misognist man standing up for the Ladz isn't he ? Boring. And I found his books dull. As did my weans when they were young. Boring old misognist.Who needs him!

PriOn1 · 01/03/2024 21:49

Ah well.

I didn’t like His Dark Materials enough to get past the first few pages.

A man of little taste and very poor judgement.
