Why aren’t we using our democratic right to protest?

WhiteVelvet · 29/02/2024 21:45

We have a democratic right to protest in the UK.

We have the right to publicly protest for our biological sex rights to be upheld.

Other than a small but dedicated group of people under KJKs movement, women have not taken to the streets. In numbers, there is safety.

So why aren’t we?

Women in Scotland have been rallying and holding street stalls, to show the public what is happening regarding the removal of their rights, for several years now. We gave been networking, ribboning, stickering, slating and judicial reviewing our Gov for years. And we are the ones with actual legislation on the table.

Excellent!

I’m really talking about good numbers of people mobilising to the streets all over the UK for huge rallies and often. Like the numbers seen for the anti lockdown protests which were frequent.

There is very little public visibility around the movement. Lots of news articles in certain publications but not enough direct action.

I think it’s mainly because we just don’t have enough tractors.

Don’t really get this, i’m not party political.

I just want our rights back.

It was an attempt at dry humour.

Whilst making the point that politicians will listen to some protesters.

In all seriousness, they have visibility. It makes a difference.

The miners were joined by the lesbian and gay movement in the 80s... and that worked for both sides I believe.

Completely different agendas but joined under the fight for their rights.

I think you're right. I too have contributed to legal crowdfunders, written to my MP, signed petitions, had careful conversations with friends and family pointing out the madness that is happening.
So many successful legal cases but the last 48 hours show it's going to take YEARS to unpick this at the current rate. I feel there's been a shift and the public is really waking up to this.
I've got a dinosaur costume. If there's a march, I'll be there.

newtlover · 29/02/2024 22:35

yeah, where are the miners now when we need them eh?

oh, wait....

Strong agree. I am disappointed we can't organise a million women march. We need it.

Runningwildish · 29/02/2024 22:44

I'd go on the March, I've been to a LWS event, but the stakes are high for some women, jobs etc. but it's like the emperors new clothes it needs a critical mass and the BBC and ITV need to start reporting on it, rather than hiding what's happening

But what if we could though? What if we could mobilise great numbers of women? I believe it is possible but the tipping point has to happen - the moment masses of women tip from writing/thinking their anger into walking the streets instead.

So many of us have been cowed into acting under the radar by the bullies’ threats to our livelihoods. They’ve effectively taken away our right to state an opinion and fight for our right to retain our hard-won rights.

I really think the time has come for direct action like mass protests.

helpfulperson · 29/02/2024 22:49

Have you tried organising a protest or do you actually mean why isn't someone else using their democratic right?

Good woman!

I’m done with politely worded letters and emails pleading for my basic human rights back.

It’s not really working or else we wouldn’t still be here with our polite pleas falling on deaf ears.

I’ve wondered this too. I’d have to be in disguise (witch or dinosaur) because, y’know, being sacked and losing my livelihood for stating facts, but tell me where and I’ll start making my placard!

No, but I believe that’s what i’m trying to do now. I’m not on my own trying to raise an army, there is already a movement but it hasn’t been mobilised or galvanised into a big rally. My feelings are it is possible.

I don't work so I have the luxury of not having to hide my face. I get fed up of stickering everywhere but never seeing any other stickers. I wonder how much good it does ( I still do it and spend quite a lot on KJK's website)

I would love to march for women...and children.

Loubelle70 · 29/02/2024 23:06

Ive been to many protests over the years....i dont think its subject matter but rather that people are fundamentally lazy...keyboard warriors.
Yes people are busy...i was running household ...full time work..but still protested. Its down to laziness...imho.

Yes I suspect that is not untrue, but I do believe there comes a point when it is too excruciating to just sit and tap out the anger and there’s nothing else left to do but get up and do something about it. There are many other issues which people rally for or against, ours is just one of those.

I haven't ever been on any political protest. Well, maybe one back in the day when Sir Keith Joseph was Education Secretary and there were leaflets handed out at the student union. So I don't know how they are organised. I'm not a member of any political party or any large organisation. How do people like me know when and where?

We’ve got to generate enough interest first and I wasn’t thinking i’d be in charge of it all 😂It’s got to be teamwork ladies!

I have been bemused as to why the other orgs such as SexMatters, FairPlayForWomen etc haven’t suggested we march. The Suffragists and Suffragettes did. They raised awareness via visibility.

A significant part of it for working women is that trade unions are very anti woman when it comes to this topic. They would support almost anyone else in political protest who came under fire at work for it but not women.

SwordToFlamethrower · 29/02/2024 23:37

I've been to loads of protests and spoken at a LWS event too.

I'm waiting to join a big protest march though, I'll be there. We should all team up, all the WRAs.
