Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Why aren’t we using our democratic right to protest?

WhiteVelvet · 29/02/2024 21:45

We have a democratic right to protest in the UK.

We have the right to publicly protest for our biological sex rights to be upheld.

Other than a small but dedicated group of people under KJKs movement, women have not taken to the streets. In numbers, there is safety.

So why aren’t we?

Sorry wrong thread!

Nope, you’re in the right place.

That was exactly my sentiments in my brain right at the moment I read your previous post.

The UK has become a dictatorship.

As long as you still think you live in a democracy and behave as though you do, the more they’ll take away. Because the truth is democracy is dead in the UK. If it wasn’t, they wouldn’t have taken our rights, language and choices away from us without allowing us to vote on it. Without allowing us a say.

Just thinking out loud: I’m inclined to agree with a PP that getting more people to attend KJK’s LWS events would be a start.

Also, whether it’s LWS events or something else, I think leadership and instruction/encouragement from said leadership is needed to galvanise people. And in numbers.

So eg would/could the leaders of the various GC groups get together and agree to encourage their members and supporters to attend X protest on Y date.

Another thought I’ve had - related to the tipping point perhaps - is that it will take a Big Thing to spur people on to turn up to a march. Maybe that Big (enough) Thing hasn’t happened yet. Not that we necessarily want to wish it will.

SoupDragonsFriend · 01/03/2024 20:25

Can someone point me in the direction of any old discussions that might explain the divisions that came about between different GC factions that have been mentioned on here? I'd just like to catch up and understand what went on. Thanks.

IwantToRetire · 01/03/2024 20:46

Echoing what Leafstamp has said, assuming that OP is wanting a march about sex based rights, that a good starting point would be to contact the various groups whose focus this is and ask if they would be interested in taking part.

Stressing that it is meant to be a cooperative event that would help show the number of organisations (including LGB?) campaigning on this issue. Lots of opportunity for placards and banners.

The idea being to show how many people (some men would want to come???) are actively concerned about what is happening. ie women's rights being erased by prioritising trans rights eg EA etc.. (re men marching, I have a vague memory of a Turkish Women's groups who always came to IWD marches with men - not because they needed escorts but because in Turkey IWD has always been mixed) and they always marched at the back.

If existing groups are on board, they each have mailings / sm followings so info about the event could be spead more easily.

And some of us on FWR on virtual feminist groups could think about even if it is only one neighbour or work colleague then could work with to share info about the event locally and make shared travel arrangements.

And taking a chance on good weather if it was held in the summer the march could end up in a park and we could have a huge picnic, no need for macho spray painting etc.. And a chance for FWRers to show their dedication to cakes, whether making them or eating them!

Dogs and children welcome?!

We could have ballons as well. Purple, green, white ...

Not sure of any threads although am sure they have been discussed, but the main differences are (and others can expand)

Those who support trans rights and transitioning but think more needs to be done to protect women's sex based rights.

Those who fundamentally reject the notion of transitioning as a lie being sold to people, and that it is a men's rights movement deliberately undermining women's rights. (which doesn't mean they dont recognise that a small % of people may suffer from actual gender disphoria)

Also and this has come up on threads, I am afraid some of the spats or put downs we see aren't so much politics but personalities, which can get a bit fevered when it appears one faction is getting more publicity / traction than another.

It mostly took place on Twitter and reached a crescendo in 2021/22. KJK talks about it in some of her videos on her YouTube channel at that time. If you go back far enough and watch her vids around that time, you’ll grasp some of it.

For clarity, there is no such thing as trans, it is all fiction and make believe.

There are only males and females. Some of who are suffering some kind of psychosis where they believe they are something/someone else.

That may be so but in this instance, that wasn’t what happened. Different factions put their politics before their rights. KJK was accused of all kind of nasty. None of it true. Her movement was attracting the general public and growing, it could have broken through into the mainstream at that point but other factions put an end to that.

Here we are anyway.

Cos we are too busy with child care and juggling work (whilst the blokes were out watching footy or Doing Something Else Really Important. Like going fishing).

Every woman in the UK could join a march and shout and wave slogans - and then what? They'd go home to carry on getting paid less, doing all the childcare and housework. Social change requires sacrifice. If women in Europe actively chose to ensure financial independence, lived alone, and refused to have children, society would change. Continuing to believe that women can have heterosexual relationships and somehow achieve equality is a fantasy.

I think mobilising behind Kelly and her Let Women Speak events would be a good place to start, the more people who start showing up to those events the better

Agree, especially now she's set up the party of women. Protests are happening - kjk has a clear message - let women speak. That's all, but we don't even have that, routinely drowned out (with loudspeakers which are supposed to be banned), regularly intimidated with violent threats.

Anyone wanting to follow the suffragette path imo needs to support kjk who is more than walking the walk.

If you can’t name yourself because the descriptors are no longer yours, how can you ask or negotiate for anything?

Don’t take this the wrong way, but you sound beaten down. Maybe take a break.

Agree. It seems there has been a concerted effort to not let women speak. Kjks events were growing, some of them were big. But yes some lies and also some women were probably put off by events like NZ and the less well policed UK events.

Fair enough.

I came to see if women were braver now, if they’d finally had enough but I think we aren’t that much further on from where it was a year ago before I took a break. The appetite just isn’t there. We’ve clearly not been persecuted badly enough yet.

Take a break from what - I've been financially independent and lived alone in my own place since for nearly 20 years. I don't have children and supported women in my life in many different ways. What would a negotiation through protest look like and what is the end goal? That men magically realise women are their equals and treat women with respect while continuing to provide a prince charming fantasy? What do women need men for except to protect them from other men? Men are indoctrinated to believe women are lesser humans who exist to serve them. No amount of protest will change this belief. Women need to reject men en masse if they want to see real change

spookehtooth · 01/03/2024 23:22

You do NOT have the right to protest. That ship sailed. What you have is the right to ask the police to shepherd you through streets that won't cause anyone too much bother or annoyance before you quietly go home and just accept nothing will really change.

What we have is a pantomime version of democracy, carefully scripted and managed. Its disappointing, how few people are prepared to take any risks whatsoever. The only past the draconian anti-protest laws is for people to turn out in large enough numbers. When the police are caught off guard or low on numbers, they negotiate rather than use their powers to arrest because of paperwork. I've seen it on a small scale

pronounsbundlebundle · 01/03/2024 23:27

I think there have been loads of protests, they've just not been reported. The Media is captured. I've seen tiny just stop oil protests with far fewer people than at lws reported whilst lws hasn't been.

Maybe we need to make the events more headline worthy, or stop traffic. Am sure kjk has some ideas for party of women events but there is a need to consider safety too.A difficult balancing act

What instance are you talking about? You seem to have a very narrow view of what has happened and what should happen when not scolding women who dont agree with your perspective.

Why ask for opinions or experiences by starting this thread and then tell everybody they are wrong because they dont share the analysis you have decided (based on 4 years by your own admission) that is how things work.

I admire KJK but she has never had a movement. She has had lots of followers. It is because we no longe have a movement that events such as the one you want never happens, because the inter connecting automonous groups do not exist. So long as most women are happy to follow and support a few individuals nothing much will happen.

Woodentu · 02/03/2024 02:39

KJK has been vilified, slandered, libelled, physically attacked, arrested, banned from all sorts of platforms, not just by men, but by women and groups that one would expect to be on the same side.
She has persisted, and in spite of all the above, she has inspired support all over the world. She has created a political party, despite every possible obstacle being used to stop her.
IMO she is the movement. By joining the POW we will get publicity and an opportunity to be heard.
WRN and FWS are providing opportunities too, for women to join local groups. It is like trying to turn a tanker, but it has to be done.

What is it that you want from the conversation?

You don’t want to protest. You don’t believe what I am saying about a scenario from the past. Ok. So what then? Just step out of the thread if you aren’t into it.

If you want an argument with me, i’m afraid I am going to disappoint you and decline.

You pulled a face when I said a whole load of women don't have the time or money to protest. And can't afford to take the risk due to their responsibilities.

What do you want from us?
