Nex Benedict false narrative

theprettywreckless · 27/02/2024 12:29

Autopsy has revealed the non binary student did not die as a result of trauma.
Police cam and school CCTV has also revealed that the student started the fight with the 3 girls by pouring water on them and that all of the students walked out of the school bathroom where the fight took placed, of their own accord. Police body cam shows Nex chatting away in a hospital bed admitting they started the fight.

So the narrative that they were beaten to a pulp and left for dead in the school bathroom was completely false.

Of course it’s very sad a child has died, but it is looking more like they took their own life. Not that they were murdered as a hate crime.

I don't know anything about what happened, but it's awful for a family to go through the death of a child in the glare of media attention.

Snowypeaks · 27/02/2024 16:08

I hadn't heard about this, but the misreporting/invention of circumstances is very wrong and also very distressing for the parents and wider family. For them, the truth about how a loved one died, even if painful, is essential knowledge. I hope they did know, even if media tried to mislead everyone else for ideological or political reasons.

LentilFaculties · 27/02/2024 16:17

How sad. Yeah it's hard to tell whether it's an ideologically blinded family leading a narrative or whether they are being used by the media or both.

I hope at some point people who consider themselves trans allies will realise that asking for safeguarding to be upheld and for the truth to be told benefits people with trans identities just as much as it does the rest of society.

It was reported a 16 year old non binary child was killed by 3 girls in a school bathroom. Which we now know wasn’t the case

What was the cause of death?

DrBlackbird · 27/02/2024 21:45

This young person’s death is a tragedy. It had been reported that she stumbled/fell/was pushed and hit her/their head on the bathroom floor. Got up and was ‘okay’ but went unconscious the following day and died. I thought it was similar to Natasha Richardson’s death ie a hematoma. Though the cause of death has not been released, there is nothing to indicate anything about possible suicide AFAIK. It must be stressed that this is heartbreaking.

ScrollingLeaves · 27/02/2024 22:23

Yes, the death of this young person is heartbreaking. And so is that I think of so many teenagers we seem to hear about almost every week. They are such a vulnerable group.

Re: The cause of death it seems unsure at the moment - The New York Times reports:
“On Feb. 21, the police said preliminary autopsy results found that Nex “did not die as a result of trauma.” The state medical examiner’s office has not yet made public its report on the autopsy and toxicology results”.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/02/2024 01:26

It's very sad, but this has clearly been latched onto by various groups for political reasons. It doesn't sound to me like a hate motivated crime was committed, just a fight where both sides gave it some and unfortunately one poor girl died later for so far inconclusive reasons.

Searching YouTube for "Nex Benedict" there are videos referring to:

  • the "Transphobic Slaying of Nex Benedict"
  • "Oklahoma vs Nex Benedict"
  • the school "performing Conversion Therapy" in the toilets;
  • protests in New York;
  • students walking out of school in Oklahoma;
  • how "anti-trans laws played a role" in her death;
  • White House Press Briefing where Karine Jean-Pierre is asked does the White House think there should there be a Federal Hate Crime investigation
and many more in that vein.

There are other videos where doubts are expressed that Dagny aka Nex seriously identified as non-binary, or that if she did that it was not of much significance to her, as she is seen on video not reacting to being referred to by she/her pronouns.

Even some videos referring to a "Hate Crime Hoax" and drawing comparisons with Jussie Smollett, which hardly seems justified.

This seems to be the most complete video of the conversation between the police officer, Nex and her mother, in either the nurse's room in the school or in the local hospital (accounts vary) after the altercation between Dagny and her friends and three younger girls in the toilets. This is followed in the same video by audio of the conversation when Nex's mum called the emergency services the next day.

Some of the audio is not very clear so turning on captions helped me to follow it.

The police have been criticised for releasing the video.

This guy has done a pretty thorough exploration of events plus some social media reactions and press coverage "from both sides of the political aisle". A "regular guy" who goes off-piste and starts talking about how there ought to be a "Normal Month" and is unimpressed with the extreme reactions and infantile social media posturing on both sides.

There are details and numerous links in the video description.

HATE Crime HOAX, Nex Benedict and What REALLY Happened

There is a family grieving and this circus is going on around them. The three girls who were involved in the altercation, they and their families are probably scared for their lives at the way this has blown up and is being used as a political football.

Comparisons are being made with how the police, media and politicians played down then memory-holed details about trans-identified Audrey/Aiden Hale, who committed the school shooting in Nashville last year, killing three children and three adults.

So the family are seeing their daughter, who poured water over some kids who made comments about her clothes, spoken about in the same breath as a mass murderer - just because they both identified as trans.

They are getting blasted by the Rainbow Mob because they have posted an obituary referring to their daughter as "Dagny" and using she/her pronouns. Even for referring to her as their daughter. Such unhinged cruelty. What is the "preferred non-binary familial relationship terminology" anyway? Offspring? FFS! The madness never ends!

Meanwhile, the The Covenant School, scene of Hale's mass shooting eleven months ago, received a bomb threat on Monday.

I hope that isn't a sign that this is spiralling even more out of control.

I'd heard about over-zealous protesters targeting the family for referring to Nex as their daughter, and using the name they knew Nex by. Such cruelty. Leave bereaved families to grieve and commemorate how they see fit.

ArabellaScott · 28/02/2024 09:09

God, the poor child. And poor family. What a tragic thing to happen.

Goodness me! What a mess. Thanks for doing all that digging.

pickledandpuzzled · 28/02/2024 12:55

Thank you for the further information. I hope the various witch hunts will reflect on themselves and on story telling in general, and the power it has to twist situations.

nauticant · 28/02/2024 13:13

This tragic story was the subject of the first half of a very recent episode of Blocked and Reported (BARPod):

https://www.blockedandreported.org/p/episode-204-jeffrey-marsh-vs-shumirun

The second half of the episode is about the Jeffrey Marsh vs Shumirun Nessa feud on TikTok and its spill-over into the real world.

I really like the discussions on BARPod. I don't agree with all that's said but they are willing to apply rational criticism to whichever extreme they look at.

InvisibleBuffy · 28/02/2024 16:09

I'm finding incredibly horrifying. The facts are so fundamentally different to what's playing out on social media and in protests and vigils.
There's still little out there about how Nex actually died, but we do know that parents have lost their child, and now they have to deal with an absolute media circus as well as a screaming mob who seem eager to blame them too.
We also know that there are three girls out there who were younger than Nex (so under 16) who had water tossed at them for no reason other than that they were giggling in a school bathroom. All of them walked away from that in a confrontation that supposedly took less than a couple of minutes and now those girls are being accused across the US of beating someone to death for being non-binary, despite there being little evidence. I can't imagine the pressure and fear those children and their families must be feeling.
The incredible lack of empathy shown to every person involved is terrifying, as is the eagerness to start witch burning.
I can only hope that calm heads set out the facts of what actually happened and the media reports on it responsibly.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/02/2024 18:05

The climate in the US over this is deranged. It's scary to listen to the madness in this video. Apparently this actress used to be in Greys Anatomy.

Actress Sara Ramirez goes on unhinged rant at vigil for Nex Benedict- accusing me, @elonmusk, @jk_rowling, @RonDeSantis and others of being “wicked adults” who created an “infrastructure of anti-trans hate”

She then bizarrely suggests Nex is being surrounded by “transcestors”

Gatorpickle · 28/02/2024 18:13

Thank you, @theprettywreckless , for sharing this.

The Americans I know are referring to this as "murder" and that one person in particular spent last week weeping and wailing about how difficult she was going find talking to her trans child (sex not specified) about this.

On MSN Start (the news site aggregator, for want of a better word) reported that there were midnight vigils in support of Nex's family.

I hope all those saw this as a way to promote their adored victimhood narration have realised that they didn't have any - let alone all - of the facts.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/02/2024 18:16

Yes the tweet I shared from Libs of TikTok has a video of one of these vigils. It's all very unhinged. Reminds me of when several Labour MPs were outside Parliament for the Brianna Ghey "vigill" with notorious convicted torturer and attempted murderer TRA Sarah Jane Baker, while a huge mob chanted "Fuck Keir Starmer".

EsmaCannonball · 28/02/2024 18:51

I read an American newspaper report on this case and the use of 'we' and 'they' pronouns throughout (sometimes when quoting Nex's own words) made the whole thing really confusing. If I had been a juror I would have had to ask for clarification on what had actually occurred. It brought home how court cases and media reporting around non-binary identifying people are going to have to put some effort into ensuring pronoun-respect doesn't obfuscate the truth.

theprettywreckless · 29/02/2024 13:30

Being a bully is of course unacceptable, but I can’t say I’m not glad that those 3 girls don’t have murder charges coming their way. There is always room for growth and development in a person, especially teenage girls. And it’s incredibly unfair that they have been branded murderers for an altercation that they didn’t instigate

And without wishing to undermine what was clearly a nasty fight, Nex didn’t appear to be visibly injured or in disarray while at the hospital that afternoon. She didn’t have signs of nose bleed, bruising, torn clothes etc. I came out of scuffles at school far worse than at.

ScrollingLeaves · 29/02/2024 20:15

I wonder what actually killed her if there was no trauma showing in the autopsy? It is a horrible incident. I do think her death seems accidental though, in the sense of not being intended but the result of a fight going badly wrong among the teen girls.

In the police video Nex said she threw one of the girls against the paper towel dispenser. Normally those are metal with sharp corners. If so, that too could with bad luck have caused a dangerous injury to that girl who was one of the three.

Tinysoxxx · 29/02/2024 20:28

I don’t want to listen to the tape but it indicates she had a seizure. It could be something like encephalitis brought on by a virus. My Dd had no warning but sometimes someone with encephalitis shows erratic or confused behaviour for hours or days beforehand. People can feel ill and will head to the toilet. Same with strokes, heart attacks etc.

This is why it is critical that public toilets have doors with gaps at the bottom, to safeguard everyone, male or female. If you collapsed behind one of the gender neutral universal toilets that the government seem to be favouring, you would have no chance. At home you would also be at risk if you lived on your own and weren’t in contact with anyone but why maximise the risk publicly?

shockeditellyou · 29/02/2024 20:33

I still don’t know if Nex was a biological female or male.

I still don’t know if Nex was a biological female or male.

In the police video from the hospital room ( posted earlier) I think I heard Nex’s mother referring to her as ‘she’.
