Mostly plugging her new book but the interviews bring up the trans issue:

"I am not trying to propel Roberts back to a 2019 skirmish in the trans wars in which she tweeted that “biology is, quite simply, messier and more wonderful than some people like to believe” and advised doubters to “ask a clownfish” — a clownfish being a fish that starts life as male but becomes female. It does, however, strike me that if human female and male brains are the same, how can it ever be said that a baby possessing male genitalia was born into the wrong body.
There is quite a pause.
“I think that’s a very difficult philosophical question. It’s very difficult to pin it down, isn’t it? And we’ve had decades of feminism where we’ve been trying to get away from women being reduced to their genitalia. My own feeling is that you approach everybody as an individual.”

No Alice, it really isn't difficult to pin down, and it's not about genitalia, it's about gametes.

On a side note, it seems if it weren't for Alice we'd still be clueless about the causative agent of plague:
"Her chapter on the Black Death of the 14th and 15th centuries reveals its genesis as the Yersinia pestis bacterium,"

Alice Roberts: ‘I’ve been estranged from my family for years’

The country’s most famous archaeologist talks to Andrew Billen about her new book, a near-death experience, family rifts — and the power of pink hair

This reminds me of this meme and the takedown.

I can’t read what that says, is there a link to it?

On an SM forum thread?
there are all sorts of people we discuss for whom we don’t use their earned titles. You don’t think posters who’ve got one should have them used do you?Confused

Dr Lucy Worsley was a visiting professor, so a short term appointment.

I’m not sure many people refer to her as Dr Worsley.

Americans call bungalows "flat houses" ...

They’re usually called ranch homes.

We lived in one.

MarieDeGournay · 10/09/2025 21:23

The most evil thing I know about Dr? Prof? Worsley is that no matter what the subject is, she is 100% going to end up in fancy bloody dress by the end of the programme.😬

Oh yes!

DH refuses to watch anything with Lucy Worsley because it inevitably involves dressing up.

Ditto Ruth Goodman.

Most famous archaeologist???

My fat menopausal arse.

I think this honour should go to the late Mick Aston, or, if not to Phil Harding, Carenza Lewis or Helen Geake.

Or potentially to someone who is not a media personality but who gets on with the job.

She's not actually an archaeologist at all ... Grin Boils my piss a tiny bit when people constantly call her one. She's an anatomist/pathologist, a medical doctor, a presenter of human science to the public, and her PhD is indeed on palaeopathology (eg pathology of ancient or at least old people) - lots of experts from other fields work and lecture in archaeology departments.

I do still like her, despite everything. Wish she'd stop Being Kind though. I always wonder if she does an inner cringe when she pulls lines like the Clownfish one, or if she genuinely is a true believer? (Ironic, given her past role as British Humanists president!)

You can’t simultaneously claim clownfish and do an inner cringe.

The (American) Humanists threw out Richard Dawkins for heresy

American here who has never heard the term 'flat house' but we use bungalow all the time.

Well that's what my DB was telling me - he's landed in Tennessee.

As far as I can see from internet searches, LW isn’t a ‘Professor’.

Ruth Goodman is no stranger to a corset but my God, the woman commits to whatever time-period she’s inhabiting. I was watching her only the other day ripping the guts out of poultry and mattocking roots from hopelessly weed-choked ground (NB not at the same time), while dressed in full 17th c yeoman farmer’s wife gear. IMHO she does actually put in the hard yards as opposed to chucking on a farthingale and simpering.

Yes, RG wears the clothes so she can feel how it was to do the work in them. I'm sure I remember one programme where she was giving the corset some side-eye at the beginning but later on said it was actually supportive when doing heavy work, and likened it to a weight-lifter's belt. I think she's ace.

RedRec · 11/09/2025 12:34

I can't forgive Alice Roberts for not going to her estranged mother's funeral. She cut her mother out of her life for being upset at her (AR's) Humanist campaign to remove state funding for religious schools. And guess who sent her children to a CofE school?
Hypocrite.

Lottapianos · 11/09/2025 12:59

'I can't forgive Alice Roberts for not going to her estranged mother's funeral'

I'm no fan of AR but that is entirely her own affair. Other people's family situations are usually way more complex than they appear from the outside

Absolutely. Her personal life is her business.

LittleBitofBread · 11/09/2025 14:44

Slight derail, sorry:

Does anyone know if any of Ruth G's programmes are available to watch? Are they BBC? They sound right up my alley, but for some reason they've passed me by.

GCAcademic · 11/09/2025 14:50

I’ve actually worked with one of the academics mentioned on this thread and their position on trans “rights” doesn’t surprise me at all. It’s extremely unlikely that they believe that a woman can have a penis, but they are ruthlessly ambitious and individualistic and wouldn’t think twice about trampling on anyone who got in their way, in their pursuit of career advancement. Of course, they are all #bekind on social media.

Tales from the Green Valley was the first thing I saw RG in, @LittleBitofBread - I caught an episode of it the other day on Together TV (I think), but this is the link to the series on YouTube.

It fascinated me because I live in a house of very similar date and construction, and it gives me a bit of a chill to think of the former inhabitants dressed in the same sort of clothes, doing the same sort of things as they went about their daily lives 400 years ago.

In Sydney, we had a style of house we called 'Californian bungalow'.

https://www.quokkascorner.com/blog/a-closer-look-at-the-californian-bungalow-a-beloved-aussie-classic

How do they compare with what you call 'bungalow'?

Yup. We'd call that a bungalow.

SerendipityJane · 11/09/2025 09:30

Well that's what my DB was telling me - he's landed in Tennessee.

News to me, but I'm a long way from Tennessee. Maybe that's what they call it there? Could be a southern thing.

We use both 'bungalow' and 'single-story home' but I've never, ever heard 'flat house'. Where I live, we need steep and/or slanting rooflines to keep snow from collapsing a building, so a 'flat house' is highly unlikely to be built.

You'd have to know my DB 😀He's the sort of chap that tries to make you feel he's the first person to do anything. So he's the first person to visit the US (to be he did settle). So I've had a lot of "in America they ... " shoved down my throat.

Took him years to forgive me for learning the US Constitution by rote to annoy him.

Anyway, on with podcast thread

Excuse slight derail, but so YouTube links are allowed on MN now? Every time I've tried to link them lately (mostly just music, I think, nothing controversial) they haven't worked.

Oh, I wasn’t aware of any prohibition on YouTube, but if the links don’t work you could just search for any of her programmes on it directly. The one I mentioned plus 'Victorian Farm', 'Edwardian Farm', 'Wartime Farm', ‘The Victorian Pharmacy' etc etc etc….
