The initial decision sounds utterly absurd. Have they been putting something in the water up there? A long way to go before they get back to full sanity, I suspect.

Bopk · 07/02/2024 07:51

How can anyone in their right mind possibly see him as a woman??

StealthSpinach · 07/02/2024 09:41

I genuinely don’t understand how someone so divorced from reality and basic science can be studying biological sciences. Do they just get to ignore scientific facts if they are considered “transphobic”?

HagoftheNorth · 07/02/2024 09:43

I notice that the US university had teamed Bloodworth with a man to be room mates - so the US university (Colorado?) is less woke than I’d imagined.

The article notes that Bloodworth could just apply for Canadian citizenship - did Bloodworth also crave a refugee identity? (surely you just say you are….)

PurpleAxe · 07/02/2024 10:01

Outrageous! Clearly he identifies as a refugee.

Holeinamole · 07/02/2024 10:03

Classic Daily Mail story. That newspaper really delivers for its readership. (That’s not a dig, btw.)

Some interesting details: this person is 36 years old, still a student and on the run from a landlord and a debt collector?

TempestTost · 07/02/2024 10:44

I don't think Canada is really returning to sense, alas.

I woke up this morning to an emotive 20 minute radio spot about attempts to pas rules that parents of "trans kids" need to be informed if they want to socially transition at school. It was all, trans kids will kill themselves, parents will kick out trans kids, etc etc. The stuff that was in the UK media 7 or 8 years ago.

There is an increasing backlash but the id pol people are holding the line stronger than ever, helped along by the legal changes TRAs have achieved.

Hoardasurass · 07/02/2024 11:05

@TempestTost having just read this I think you're correct about my over optimizum

Outrage as FIVE trans students dominate the women's volleyball court

A recent collegiate volleyball game in Canada consisted of five trans players among two teams, in additional to the biological females.

Fixed it for you.

The guy seems on the run from reality to me.

lechiffre55 · 07/02/2024 11:21

@Hoardasurass
That's the plot of the movie Ladyballers.
Spoiler warning for how it turns out.
Another team hires all male pro basketball players and beats the Ladyballers in the final.

It's a modern remake of this classic movie where Spain fielded an entire basketball team of athletes with no disabilities at the 2000 Paralympics in Sydney in order to win the gold medal. The athletes with disabilities just couldn't be bothered to train hard enough to compete against athletes who identified as disabled and lost because of that arrogant laziness.
In the remake they swap disabilities for uteruses.

The biggest cheats in sporting history: Staggering story of Spanish basketball team who pretended to be disabled to win Paralympic gold

The former head of the Spanish Federation for Mentally Handicapped Sports, Fernando Martin Vicente, has been found guilty of fraud over the scandal at the Sydney Olympics.

An interesting situation, the issue seems mainly to do with the open carry gun policy rather than just the [perceived] transphobia. I would hazard a guess that many other groups are at increased risk due to the gun laws, notably young black men, and to give refugee status to (in essence) a white, middle aged, male seems a bizarre decision. It makes me question if other routes to gain citizenship were not possible (? previous convictions, ? Debt collectors) and therefore this was trying to force Canada's hand.

I'm not sure refugee status should be given based on not liking a law in a country especially when there is no risk of torture or imprisonment. The trans element in a way is a red herring.

Lots of people study older in Canada to be fair. Student funding works very differently there and people will often study over a much longer period of time, depending on their circumstances.

Rightsraptor · 07/02/2024 12:07

It's not beyond the realms of possibility that any violence from the former landlord and debt collection agency were because he just owed them money and they were mightily pissed off.

Or is being trans an excuse for not paying your bills?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 07/02/2024 13:10

Canada due election soon, I believe. Trudeau out?

Almost certainly, he is deeply unpopular.

I blame Monty Python. If they had never done the Lumberjack song.....

Based on the furious reaction to Alberta premier Danielle Smith's "common sense" policy on trans issues, I think things are beginning to turn. The Prime Minister and cabinet are against her as is the leader of the national NDP. The provincial NDP are against her. The legacy media manage to feature no one who supports her. The usual talking heads on supposedly diverse panels, marching in lock step, misrepresent the policy and criticize her. The Alberta Medical Association made a statement against her, as have the public sector unions, teachers, and social workers or their representatives.

And yet .....

She has wide support of people across Canada. The most quoted figure is 78%! I have read hundreds of comments on the news reports posted by legacy media to youtube and these are almost universally in support and indicate people know what the issues are.

Today, the leader of the Opposition Pierre Poilievre stated in response to media questions, that he is against the use of puberty blockers for minors.

As to the trans person in question. For someone who is so afraid of guns he had to flee his own country, the Yukon is an odd choice.

Yes, this is quite an interesting thing.

Alberta always seems to have a higher proportion of more conservative people, but this isn't confined to Alberta or even the prairies.

But all those groups coming out with statements about her - it really does seem to indicate that there is this bubble of managerial university educated people who are very much at odds with the population at large.

I think PP is a twit, I had very much hoped for a different choice in the leadership convention, but goodness knows there is a need for a change in direction.

fromorbit · 08/02/2024 06:45

Canada has to have an election before October 20, 2025. So could be this year, who knows - the conservatives are consistently ahead in the polls. Trudeau is a huge liability now.

The conservative conference last year voted on a bunch of measures to reduce gender madness. Pierre Poilievre has been dragging his heels behind the rest of the party. Alberta is doing what many think is necessary.

Pierre Poilievre's statement on stopping experiments on kids is a major and welcome shift.
