Thanks for reminding me of that poem NecessaryScene when I was little we had a recording of the book on cassette, and it was beautifully read. Sadly can’t remember who by. The poem was read very seriously and earnestly and I always found it really sad! The lack of connection and listening and then the sad memory at the end. Even though it’s so silly.

I wonder how far away we are from abandoning pronouns altogether and just using names… which will be a nightmare for me as I never remember them…

I usually say whatshisname or whatshername when I can't remember a name but it is terribly sex based.

DadJoke · 05/02/2024 18:48

He's fine with he. He's doing a performance bit.

Fenlandia · 05/02/2024 18:48

My pronouns are ampersand/hyphen

DuchessNope · 05/02/2024 18:49

Do you not think this person is satirising the pronoun thing?

Walkingtheplank · 05/02/2024 19:02

judy has to be taking the proverbial.

MrsWhattery · 05/02/2024 19:07

Found this explanation from judyself on the web:

”My gender is performer and my gender pronoun is 'judy’ because I wanted a gender pronoun that is an art piece, that makes people pause and consider and laugh because everyone is so uptight about getting it right.”

MrsWhattery · 05/02/2024 19:08

which I kind of have some time for and apparently as DadJoke says, he is him in his personal life.

OkPedro · 05/02/2024 19:36

I'm confused! who uses the pronoun Judy?! I thought it was your wan Felicity using it 😂

Yet the Guardian published it without irony. That’s the bigger problem for me.

Imnotthemonalisa · 05/02/2024 20:27

I am outraged! This is cultural appropriation! As every right minded person knows 'judy' is a very old Irish/Scouse word used by men to describe their girlfriends.

I know. Guardian innit. Wouldn't expect anything less than them not only respecting that "pronoun" but making sure they unnecessarily shoehorned it in. Where they used it, it would be more standard to use the person's name.

NotBadConsidering · 05/02/2024 20:59

And it was only used in that one paragraph. So they probably know it’s bullshit but have painted themselves into a corner where the have to use it because they’ve done it for everyone else, even rapists like Karen White.

You can just imagine it, can’t you? All nodding sagely at “Judy/Judyself” pronouns while inwardly congratulating themselves on their progressiveness and being glad of an opportunity to demonstrate it.

popebishop · 05/02/2024 21:12

It's clearly a jokey bit of fun to anyone who reads it. I can't understand what serious angle anyone even think exists?

ReversedFerret · 05/02/2024 21:24

If the full set of pronouns is "judy", standing in for he/him/his/himself, I'd think it has the potential to become quite confusing.

If you see Mac, could you please ask judy if judy can stop by my office and bring judy books with judy? I don't need anyone else's books, just judy - but I need judy to bring them judy.

If this becomes normalised, I suspect English will evolve similarly to languages like Korean where it's standard to just use the name every time - or to skip pronouns completely if the meaning isn't ambiguous.

(Also, Apple autocorrect insists on making "judy" into "Judy", so there's a microaggression waiting to happen).

MrsWhattery · 05/02/2024 21:48

so there's a microaggression waiting to happen

I lolled!

Boiledbeetle · 05/02/2024 22:01

What you need is a family who all use judy as a pronoun. Jude and Judith with their children Juditta and Jud.

it would be absolute hell!

Taylor Mac is the writer named in the first line of the article.
