That was a long, sad, read. I think one sentence in the beginning says it all really, and we need to be able to tell teenagers that most feel this way. It's normal, it is okay to feel this way, it will pass.

Powell, like many teenagers, didn’t feel comfortable in her own skin.

Excellent article. So helpful (though painful) to see it all laid out clearly.,

Thank you very much for the share token. I do hope this might be a sign that the writing is on the wall for the affirmative approach in North America. Given how influential US culture is on the rest of the world, it's been disastrous.

I'm glad more and more articles are coming out about this. Only 10 years too late but at least it's coming...

Codlingmoths · 05/02/2024 13:26

Wow. That is a refreshing read. So glad they feel they can publish this now.

Brilliant article thanks for sharing. Finally no debate is over.

Is the NYT known to lean in either political direction?

bignosebignose · 05/02/2024 14:07

Broadly left-leaning editorially, so this is a pleasant surprise.

Quite left leaning and it even published articles/opinion pieces calling JKR transphobic. That was when I unsubscribed from the NYT.

I have wondered, when did we stop telling teenagers this? It was emphasized a lot when I was a teen.

Particularly, did they stop telling kids this before trans ideology became mainstream?

Pamela Paul wrote a follow-up to this article (common at NYTimes) and I find it almost better info than the original piece. It's half reporting sources and half rebuttal to some idiots fuming about her original essay.

This stood out^ As I wrote in my column, “Nobody knows how many young people desist after social, medical or surgical transitions.” Admitting you don’t have an answer is hard, but it’s especially important for journalists to do so.^
