There isn't a big choice of moderate , sane , honest tory leadership candidates it is true. Because Johnson, Cummings et al drove them out of the Conservative Party.

Presumably there will be another struggle post election. If its up to the membership another right wing candidate will surely prevail. Perhaps Farage , Lee Anderson or Badenoch herself. Will conference change the rules though, so the rump parliamentary party can find someone halfway sensible?

They don't need to rule change, the parliamentary party can still sew it up between themselves if they want to. If only one candidate has sufficient MP support, the membership never get near it. The bigger issue, I think, is that what survives the next GE is mostly not going to be from the more moderate wing.

Aside from the fact that she’s a cultural warrior who seems to revel in stoking division - did you see her in the leadership debates? Her manner is terrible - very patronising and rude. I cannot imagine her connecting with the wider public well.

Edited

What is a 'cultural warrior' ?

Her manner is forthright and direct - exactly what I like to see and rare in a politician of any stripe.

Lots of people get upset by strong women and it appears that you are one of them. Never mind.

A culture warrior is someone who chooses to waste time endlessly making speeches about their “war on the woke” rather than actually dealing with the issues facing the country. Someone who seeks to divide rather than to repair.

It is incredibly patronising of you to say because I disagree with both Kemi’s politics and her rhetorical style that I’m somehow upset by “strong” women. I just don’t think of her as one.

Thedance · 01/02/2024 17:16

I can't think of anyone worse

ruby1957 · 01/02/2024 17:18

No - I would not want another woman as PM - they cannot run the country just on women's issues/women's rights.

A PM must take account of all sides on the issues and I can think of very few of any stripe who have managed to do that.

NoMoreFalafelsForYou · 01/02/2024 17:27

Hell no!

Also this
@artant
The last thing the country needs is an even more right wing government. The way to achieve equality is not to make things shit for everyone

Dapbag · 01/02/2024 17:58

I wouldn't vote for her on the basis of her voting record.

She voted against:

  • raising taxes on banks
  • laws to improve equality and human rights
  • paying higher benefits to those unable to work through disability
  • measures to prevent climate change.

She voted for

  • restricting access to legal aid.

Nothing in her voting record at all to suggest that she cares about improving the lives of anyone in this country - least of all women and children.

TheGreatGherkin · 01/02/2024 18:23

@ThePenguinIsDrunk

Agreed

Pigeon851 · 01/02/2024 18:30

Agree with much of the above- I admire her stance on women's rights but the rest of her politics are much too far to the right for my liking.

I love her straight talking manner - I imagine she'd be a fun pub companion (as long as you avoided any politics chat!)

BatteryPowerGnat · 01/02/2024 18:50

ThePenguinIsDrunk · 01/02/2024 10:32

Nope. While I admire her stance and actions wrt women's and girl's rights and single sex spaces I disgree with her on almost all else and think many tory policies would be devastating for women and children however they ID

^^ exactly this is it for me

Dapbag · 01/02/2024 18:56

Really interesting that the only posts on here supporting Kemi are because of her strong woman energy, because she does her research, speaks her mind and would be fun in the pub.

Nobody has said they admire her politics.

The tories are not right wing enough at the moment hence them losing votes they usually count on.

England is inherently conservative and votes in self interest as I will be doing.

Labour has no policy so far that benefits me as a childless higher rate tax payer with no mortgage and private insurance.

Are you kidding me? Did you actually just say you don't want a woman PM, on the feminist board?

Reasons why the Tories are losing votes they took for granted

  • running the country into the ground
  • allowing pollution in our rivers
  • failing on all housing measures
  • ruining the economy
  • HS2 failure(s)
  • increasing the tax burden on individuals
  • the parlous state of public services
  • reducing Environment Agency spending by 75% in 10 years
  • NHS waiting times
  • PPE contracts for friends and family
  • Michelle Mone PPE contract
  • Partygate
  • Liz Truss mini budget
  • gold wallpaper
  • Boris Johnson's £15,000 holiday
  • tractor porn
  • three Prime Ministers in a year
  • four Chancellors of the Exchequer in one year
  • tax fraud
  • Pritti Patel's bullying and the resultant expensive compensation at tax payers expense
  • rule breaking over lobbying
  • Sunak's non-dom tax loopholes
  • cash for favours
  • Hancock's snogging in the office
  • Watered down environmental targets
  • Sunak's heated stables and swimming pool whilst public baths close
  • Liz Trusses resignation honours list
  • Ending SureStart
  • No dentists
  • Poor public transport
  • The parlous state of our roads
  • 4.2 million children (29% of all UK children) in poverty - up from 3.6 million in 2010 - 11.

I'd be very interested to see the data on how many votes they're losing because they're not right wing enough.

TempestTost · 01/02/2024 20:45

I think she is quite intelligent, and in some ways I value that more than seeing policy the way I do myself.

That being said, she'd be crazy to go for it now. The Tories are almost certain to lose, or perhaps they could end up in some sort of minority position. I tend to think they'd be best off to stick with Sunak, he isn't actually a complete failure.

This is not true - or certainly not true any more - the polling for Tories amongst anyone under 49 is catastrophic and moving rightwards is absolutely not the way to improve it.

whenlifegivesyoulemonssuckonthem · 01/02/2024 22:03

Well I’m 48 and none of them affect me….

own my house no mortgage
generally work abroad when I do and mostly invest
private health

environment don’t really care as I’ll be long dead by the time it really matters

Children are not my problem - their parents problem as they. Hose to have them.

Corruption? We would all do it if we thought we could get away with it.

borntobequiet · 01/02/2024 22:33

No. She’s right on this issue but that’s it.

Hmmmmaybe · 01/02/2024 22:36

What are her views people don’t agree with? I only know her gender views which I think are researched and coherent

Speak for yourself.Hmm Corruption costs all of us, particularly women and children.

DojaPhat · 02/02/2024 00:11

I admire the optimism she has to aspire to be PM but she wouldn't be elected, and doubt she'd manage to get in via the backdoor a la Rishi. He'll also be gone when it comes to election time but again - the optimism is nice.
