Okay I'm not good at X Twitter which is not a good place to try and share information because its format is against the exchange of in depth info! But as far as I can make out:

Meeting called by Brighton and Hove Council as part of a series, to specifically talk about VAWG https://twitter.com/AndreiCzolak/status/1746619505940254911

And groups like Rise encouraged women to attend https://twitter.com/riseuk/status/1746867237003088186

Someone brought some leaflets to highlight the lack of provision of women only support services referencing @IamSarah

FiLia's tweet (or is it now an X) is not at all clear, but if you click on the photo of the leaflet it is just about legible.

And apparently someone went round the room snatching up copies of the leaflet https://twitter.com/FiLiAcharity/status/1752031167090397288

I know Brighton is full of fanatics, but even by Brighton standards this seems a bit extreme.

Anyone got any more info who did this.

Was it the organisers ie the Council?

Was it someone from Survivors Network?

Or was it because in view of upcoming court case it was inappropriate?

Or just another day in the heady TRA capital - Brighton?

Poor old Brighton CC. The notion of democracy or the rights and safety of women rarely troubles their thoughts does it?

PriOn1 · 31/01/2024 10:11

I continue to find these people quite unbelievable. Where did they learn to be so rude and consider it normal? How can they believe themselves somehow to be righteous, when behaving like playground bullies?

Their behaviour is simply bizarre. It’s as if they are possessed.

Mention of the Sarah Summers case may have caused the problem, because it is ongoing. However, sounds more like the action of deranged activists.

I've wasted what seems like hours, but probably 30 minutes and can see not follow up. On one level it seems quite serious, so am surprised there is nothing else.

I am 90% certain this is the woman who wrote the leaflet but all she does is qutoe FiLia. https://twitter.com/firehorse21

Very strange. But odd there is no comment from meeting organisers.

Or maybe just a reflection that twitter isn't as powerful as people think.

And couldn't find anything in local papers.

Local paper has now written about this and surprise surprise:

when a council officer saw them, she began gathering them up – and even went so far as to snatch them out of at least one attendee’s hands. She and other council officers and councillors described them to other attendees as “offensive” and “transphobic”.

Honestly how is it possible that people in charge of serious decisions, such as violence against women strategies feel entitled to do this.

What a shit show Brighton is, or rather the council.

I used to visit as it the easiest place for me to get to to be by the sea. And watch the "murmaration" (lovely word) of starlings. Now I dont even think of visiting.

Gender critical leaflets snatched out of hands by council officer, campaigners say

A gender critical leaflet written by a survivor of sexual abuse was ripped out of the hands of delegates at

This is quite a long article explaining what happened at the meeting and clearly it was more than one council worker getting a bit ahead of themselves, ie not deranged activists but council employees.

Sounds a really manipulative meeting - at the expense of women as a whole, and specifically women survivors of men sexual violence.

Does our council have a woman problem?

A year ago I published an opinion piece asking Does Brighton have a woman problem? It described ways in which
