Edinburgh Arts Group to launch play about JKR called TERF C**T – where Daniel, Rupert and Emma stage an 'intervention'

The play, which will be performed on stage in New York next month and is being touted for the Fringe this summer, sees the author's 'surrogate children – Daniel, Rupert and Emma' stage an 'intervention'

Civil Disobedience, which has its roots in the Edinburgh Fringe and was launched by Barry and Josef Church-Woods in May 2016, described it as a "vital think-piece on Joanne, exploring just what could motivate a person with such privilege to take such a divisive stance on issues that affect her fans".

It has been written by Joshua Kaplan, a "queer screenwriter and playwright", and will be performed at The Actors Studio in New York City on Thursday, February 8.

A press release advertising the show claims: "Please note: TERF C**T is not a kill piece. It provides space for reflection and ultimately offers the audience time to explore some of the more contentious aspects of JK's life."

The synopsis for the show continues: "Joanne led a blessed life – for a woman. Billionaire. Literary phenomenon. Natural ginger. And most importantly, beloved. Completely beloved. Until she blew it all to hell.

"From book deals to divorces, family dysfunction to broken friendships, TERF C**T goes beyond the headlines to explore the woman that captivated a world with her books only to unravel a legacy with her tweets."

Interesting that it's a Guardian review.

As in the actual Guardian, given its recent trans reporting, referring to JKR as 'this generous liberal-minded novelist' with no apparent snark. Liberal minded: so not far right, then.

"We meander back in time to see examples of the author’s troubled history with men and her substantial charitable donations (which surely cannot have been as begrudging as they seem here), but we see nothing to connect this generous liberal-minded novelist with her divisive social-media output."

duc748 · 04/08/2024 23:00

Hmm. Reading that again, I'm not so sure there's no snark there. Ambiguous, maybe.

That’s not my experience, I even had strangers (adults) in the street yelling insults at me as a teenager.

It's ancient (well 1200 years) memory - Danes often had red hair, so that might be the origin of dislike? I like red/ginger/auburn hair and wished very much I had it. My late MiL was a natural redhead - I never heard her say she was called names or that anyone disparaged the colour - perhaps it's recent (even though the origin is ancient)? MiL was born in 1920.

Not sure if this has been posted, but I saw it by chance on Sky news.

Totally biased report about poor actors and writer getting death threats. Happy to describe as though perfectly normal to have a play imagining an "intervention" with a living women because she not only wrote popular childrent's fiction but also dared to speak about women's sex based rights.

No reference to what JKR thinks or might feel about being exoloited and misrepresented in this way, but just added perhaps as she lives in Edinburgh she might pop in.

How this qualifies as "news" when it was basically PR for the play.

Astonishing.

Not the point of the thread but I’m surprised to see “natural ginger” listed as a blessing, it’s been the bane of my life, constant bullying as a child/teenager and some less than complimentary comments as an adult, personally I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

I’ve never understood why people are so nasty about it. I think it’s a beautiful hair colour. But I’ve never understood why people are so nasty to each other about natural characteristics in general.

From the reviews, it sounds about as nuanced, politically astute and hard-hitting as a Legz Akimbo play.

I don’t think I can be fucked to go and see it.

We could go together? Dildos day trip?

How many different euphemisms can male reviewers find for men beating women, I wonder?

This week the IOC have given us a new one! "It's sport you bigot" it can barely fit on the excuses shelf beside all the other "she was asking for it" baubles of patriarchy but they'll always find more space for reasons to excuse the abuse of women.

woofyoof · 05/08/2024 09:17

It could have been an amazing play.. I would love to see a movie about JK's life. It could show all the different viewpoints and let people decide for themselves.

EXCEPT... if they did that, everyone will peak 😂

DisgustedOfMorningside · 05/08/2024 10:25

@NicolaSturgeonsMarzipanDildo @TheMarzipanDildo Ooh can I join you - two Dildoes and a Disgusted?

I feel obliged to point out that Disgusteds don't notice the Fringe apart from moaning about the crowds in Princes Street. Arty Disgusteds get posh tickets for the main Festival, the rest of us boast about going away for August.

JKR doesn't live in Merchiston any more but I like to think of her spending August sipping pina colada on a tropical beach (or picking up shells in a high wind on Mull) Whatever rocks her boat. Which probably wouldn't be watching a show that even the Guardian only gave 2 stars.

Did no-one grow up wanting to be like Anne Shirley of Green Gables, or Jo March? To whom we can now add JKR

All the fictional characters I wanted to grow up to be like were male.

Oh ...

EmpressaurusOfTheScathingTinsel · 06/08/2024 19:53

I’ve seen some idiots claiming that Jo March was trans. Although I don’t think they’ve tried it on with Anne Shirley.

I think someone tried it on with L M Montgomery though. I remember something to do with Anne wanting to be clever and that being autobiographical and therefore the author was trans. Or some such bollocks.

So many are exploiting her now, as if she was some sort of universal mother whose coat tails they hang off.
Its so noticeable.
Stick JKRowling in your title wether podcast, book, play or tweet and guarantee traction.
What I want to know, is why is he here?
Since Brexit it seems we have been flooded with mediocre Americans on our media.
I dont think its good for us at all.

I have flame red hair. It is the witches curse. So many people wish they had it. So many people suggest that you smell or are an orangutan. The real downside is clarting up with SPF70 from April until September.
My red hair is part of me, along side my white skin and freckles. Why should it be a thing?

NoBinturongsHereMate · 06/08/2024 23:31

I'd like red hair, but I'd like to be an orangutan even more (provided we can get rid of the people endangering them).

The people endangering them are in part, the British public stuffing themselves with bought biscuits cakes soups and all ready meals full of palm oil, knowing full well the damage cos we have been told exhaustively in every media, but intentionally looking away from the reality that a habit that is causing not only our sickness and the destruction of their habitat and every other species that lives there.

Does anyone remember the poem "I Want to be an Orangutan"? I remember seeing it read out, maybe by the author, but not who that was. It had the line "I've dyed ma oxters orange". It was brilliant!
