The play, which will be performed on stage in New York next month and is being touted for the Fringe this summer, sees the author's 'surrogate children – Daniel, Rupert and Emma' stage an 'intervention'

Civil Disobedience, which has its roots in the Edinburgh Fringe and was launched by Barry and Josef Church-Woods in May 2016, described it as a "vital think-piece on Joanne, exploring just what could motivate a person with such privilege to take such a divisive stance on issues that affect her fans".

It has been written by Joshua Kaplan, a "queer screenwriter and playwright", and will be performed at The Actors Studio in New York City on Thursday, February 8.

A press release advertising the show claims: "Please note: TERF C**T is not a kill piece. It provides space for reflection and ultimately offers the audience time to explore some of the more contentious aspects of JK's life."

The synopsis for the show continues: "Joanne led a blessed life – for a woman. Billionaire. Literary phenomenon. Natural ginger. And most importantly, beloved. Completely beloved. Until she blew it all to hell.

"From book deals to divorces, family dysfunction to broken friendships, TERF C**T goes beyond the headlines to explore the woman that captivated a world with her books only to unravel a legacy with her tweets."

I think Josh has a point though, when he said to Julie “you haven’t seen or read it yet”.

She was criticising his use of language and him not speaking to GC people before writing it - but he’s not an investigative journalist, he doesn’t need to provide balance. He’s created art, potentially lazy, defamatory art, but he is right, we don’t know that yet because we haven’t seen the play.

I think Josh will be disappointed - there won’t be protests because that’s not what Terfs do, we generally support freedom of speech. It’s far more likely that terfs will buy tickets and laugh in all the wrong places, which can be difficult for actors to manage, especially if the actor is the director’s 95th casting choice. If Josh has done his homework he’ll know the Terfs are inside the room not outside being disruptive, the first rule of the Arts is “know your audience” after all.

We are four old Fringe hands, we got all the clap and all the contacts over our collective years of performing and producing.

We know men often have a problem writing female characters - especially if the man is a bit of a prick. The fringe is full of those.

My friends and I are really looking forward to it, we won’t be wearing logos or suffragette colours. We are taking sweeties and notebooks and then going for a pub lunch to pick it all apart and I’ll report back.

The best protest available for this play is tumbleweed outside the venue.

Chersfrozenface · 01/08/2024 18:24

Oh dear.

No protests and 40 people in a 350 seat venue.

lcakethereforeIam · 01/08/2024 18:27

Thanks for the share token. What an anti-climax for him

Of course, the Fringe is no stranger to hullabaloo and protest, but judging by the complete absence of chanting and placards outside the Assembly Rooms on the opening day of the festival — not to mention the modest turnout of about 40 souls in a 350-seat venue — it would appear that Disgusted of Morningside didn’t get the memo about this one.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 01/08/2024 18:31

This is absolutely priceless Grin

"The only trans character in the show remains largely mute, with tape across her mouth, suggesting the lack of trans voices in the debate about their rights and women’s rights."

UpThePankhurst · 01/08/2024 18:33

😂

EmpressaurusOfTheScathingTinsel · 01/08/2024 18:33

He should have hired actors to stand outside & protest. It must be very disappointing that we didn’t bother.

Suggests to me it was the only way they could get him to shut up, probably about being silenced.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 01/08/2024 18:48

He should have hired actors to stand outside & protest.

I'm actually surprised he didn't. Maybe the budget had run out for the "crisis actors".

Oh she did, she did. 😂

Review in the Times eh? It's really working for him.

Chersfrozenface · 01/08/2024 19:15

Not sure how many people will be tempted by this review to pay to see "an overlong and rather messy slog".

There's another 3,500-odd other productions on in town this month.

lcakethereforeIam · 01/08/2024 19:15

The Telegraph have written about it but not reviewed it, apparently no reviews until Friday

'Lost and flavourless, and an overlong and rather messy slog.'

And only 40 people went and no protests.

ApocalipstickNow · 01/08/2024 19:27

He must be tremendously relieved 😂

lcakethereforeIam · 01/08/2024 19:54

Look at both the sides, go on! Look at them. On one side we have GC feminists and anyone even tangentially supportive being demonstrated against by masked men with violent and/or pornographic sign. Kicked out of venues, forced to hide in shops, spat on and assaulted. And then we have this <sad trombone noise>

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 02/08/2024 07:37

"Eyerolls and tuts"? Literal violence! Trans teens have fled their homes for less.

There is just no comparison is there?

RoyalCorgi · 02/08/2024 09:01

Forty audience members in a 350-seat venue for a play that has been extensively publicised in the Times, Telegraph, Guardian and Mail.

Not very impressive, is it?

The Times reviewer comments: "Or could it be that, despite the clamour around trans rights — notably the Gender Recognition Reform bill that proved such a headache for the Scottish government — this is not as inflammatory an issue as some would have us believe?"

That misses the point by a country mile. As we have pointed out many times, the aggression, hostility and violence all come from one side. Trans activists issue bomb threats to venues hosting women's meetings, throw smoke bombs at women's gatherings, throw water at them, turn up in black masks and drown out speakers with chanting and physically assault women. It is women who have to hire security for their meetings, not trans activists.

Women, on the other hand, don't turn up and throw smoke bombs at a play just because they disagree with it. We don't issue threats to the venue or throw water or assault people.

When will the media stop spreading lies?

Chersfrozenface · 02/08/2024 09:17

"At around 40-60 people, it was a very healthy turnout for a Fringe show"

If that is true, why did the producers bother booking a 350 seat venue?

The original venue has 300 seats.

I rather think they were expecting more than 40 in the audience.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 02/08/2024 09:32

40-60 is good for the preview of a new show by unknowns. It will increase over time, how much depends on the reviews and publicity. The publicity has been very good because the much-vaunted "controversy" has brought the big newspapers in. The reviews are not brilliant, "overlong" is not good for a show that was less than a hour and a half but even 3 stars should get a reasonable audience to a main venue.

RedToothBrush · 02/08/2024 10:06

There were 40 to 60 people there.

And half of them were paid journalists doing a review.
