Edinburgh Arts Group to launch play about JKR called TERF C**T – where Daniel, Rupert and Emma stage an 'intervention'

The play, which will be performed on stage in New York next month and is being touted for the Fringe this summer, sees the author's 'surrogate children – Daniel, Rupert and Emma' stage an 'intervention'

Civil Disobedience, which has its roots in the Edinburgh Fringe and was launched by Barry and Josef Church-Woods in May 2016, described it as a "vital think-piece on Joanne, exploring just what could motivate a person with such privilege to take such a divisive stance on issues that affect her fans".

It has been written by Joshua Kaplan, a "queer screenwriter and playwright", and will be performed at The Actors Studio in New York City on Thursday, February 8.

A press release advertising the show claims: "Please note: TERF C**T is not a kill piece. It provides space for reflection and ultimately offers the audience time to explore some of the more contentious aspects of JK's life."

The synopsis for the show continues: "Joanne led a blessed life – for a woman. Billionaire. Literary phenomenon. Natural ginger. And most importantly, beloved. Completely beloved. Until she blew it all to hell.

"From book deals to divorces, family dysfunction to broken friendships, TERF C**T goes beyond the headlines to explore the woman that captivated a world with her books only to unravel a legacy with her tweets."

Sorry OP but once the derailers and bots have arrived on a thread there’s very little you can do apart from waiting for it to fill up and then start another one with the topic you want to discuss.

Yes ideally we’d ignore them but it seems many people cannot bear to let an egregious statement go unchallenged. I can see why, although I do wonder at all this training we’re giving the bots and how much they’re learning from it.

popebishop · 22/05/2024 21:18

To be fair, the play's not out till summer so no-one can watch it to comment on it hence the discussion arising from someone misunderstanding what 'the C-word' meant relating to the title.

But I get what you mean OP.

Boiledbeetle · 22/05/2024 21:36

There is one positive to a thread being derailed. Aston University and Eden Palmer were planning on disregarding any threads that were derailed for her PhD about Mumsnet. So there's that!

Yes, anything that veers off topic gets discounted from the corpus. Tell me you've never read MN without telling me you've never read MN.

Is eden palmer going to be the new cancel the cheque, Mexican house thief and elderly Korean woman?

Probably!😁

NicolaSturgeonsMarzipanDildo · 22/05/2024 23:03

Is Eden Palmer going to discount threads mentioning Eden Palmer? That's just too much temptation to resist!

What??? 😂

SinnerBoy · 26/05/2024 15:54

It's a thread in classics:

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/mumsnet_classics?page=1

I can't remember the name of it, but a poster had a holiday home in Mexico and when they turned up, the caretaker had been renting it out and there were people in it.

MoonlitPeaGreenBoat · 14/06/2024 22:52

Have just seen in the news that no female actors have accepted any roles in the play. Brilliant!

Unless there is some plot twist whereby they acknowledge the intense mysogengy inherent in calling a DVA survivor a woman of great privileges.

Yes she is rich and successful now but she has been through horrific abuse. Being rich won't have made her forget how that felt, having to run away with a baby from violence and abuse.

Unfortunately I know how that feels and even if I did get rich someday, that wouldn't invalidate my experience.

Seen this on Twitter: https://twitter.com/IndiaWilloughby/status/1804957441337028642 'They’re trying to cancel Josh Kaplan’s play ‘Terf’ about JKR at the Edinburgh Fringe.Venue owner suddenly threatening to pull the plug after being very supportive.' Answering tweets blaming it all on 't*rfs', accusing feminists of hypocrisy, censorship etc. What actually seems to have happened is that the venue owner has got cold feet after all the bad press. Massive irony considering how TRAs have pressured venue owners to shut down feminist events over the years!

NotTerfNorCis · 24/06/2024 08:48

One tweet in response:

https://twitter.com/miffythegamer/status/1804961649448866113

'Bunch of fascists. The same w*nkers who screech about being cancelled.'

My irony meter.. has blown up.

Needmoresleep · 24/06/2024 09:07

Or...

They have got the venue on the basis of a down payment and a promise to share a percentage of the box office receipts. The venue owner is realising that this is not going to be a sell-out, and has a better offer.

This appears to have been the decision that the better known venues made, so why not this one. But easier to blame "terfs".

When I saw Elaine Miller's sell out show a couple of years ago there was a trans comedian in one of the other rooms in the same building. Much more hype and bigger posters, but no evidence of much audience demand. Edinburgh is now very commercial. Money will talk.

Heading the poster with ‘Civil Disobedience and Theatre of the existential Void Present’ would be enough for me to avoid it without knowing a single thing about the play. Just what pretentious twattery is that? 🙄

UpThePankhurst · 25/06/2024 19:49

To be fair, Pretentious Twattery is a strong theme in many theatre festivals.

Igneococcus · 07/07/2024 06:51

They had to go all the way to Texas to find someone to play JKR:

Igneococcus · 07/07/2024 06:53

Actually no, she's Texan but lives in London.

RedToothBrush · 07/07/2024 07:14

Search her. She's got next to no profile. She's looking for a decent break. Picking something controversial makes sense. She's got fuck all to lose in terms of her career. By her own admission parts dried up and became less interesting as a female who was older and had time out the workplace...

RedToothBrush · 07/07/2024 07:16

Still, they managed to pick someone much younger than Rowling. Because the older you get the less actresses there are full stop. Precisely because of the lack of decent parts and the sexism of the industry which drops older actresses...

The irony klaxon is off the scale in its misogyny

Bailey, who does not use Twitter, admits to having been “terribly uninformed, woefully uninformed” about the issue before taking the role

“Trans people deserve trans rights and human rights,” she said. “That’s just a given. And I don’t understand why she would attack and say some of the things she said on Twitter.”

Strewth. Given she says she's done her character research, that comment is not going to age well.

"I've researched what JKR has said on twitter thoroughly by not looking at twitter and seeing what JKR has said."

Facepalm.

UpThePankhurst · 07/07/2024 08:05

"Trans people deserve trans rights"

Not to deprive women and children of their human rights for their own benefit they don't. Ffs.

Seriestwo · 07/07/2024 08:40

Brilliant news. I’m definitely going to see this!

theilltemperedclavecinist · 07/07/2024 09:01

In one scene Rowling accuses Radcliffe of “treating propaganda as if it were gospel, opinion as if it were fact, and god forbid someone should even hint that maybe up is not down, you bravely silence them with 280 character smears”.

That's not the sort of unhinged attack on jkr that I was expecting. Could this play turn out to be useful or interesting after all?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/07/2024 12:50

I thought they wanted a male to play JKR?
