Well this will be interesting! I hope to see much TERFery but it might be the total opposite.

Can't see where it says you have to live in Wales or be Welsh to apply to this, so pass it on if you know anyone who fancies getting into some controversy.

It specifically says artists can be based anywhere in the world.

'How does a woman decide the kind of woman she is? Who's looking? Who's judging? What insight might the experience of transgender women provide? '

Rightsraptor · 21/01/2024 00:04

I can't see how the experience of 'transgender women' would provide actual women with any insight into themselves (the women) at all. How could it?

Unless perhaps I think of someone like Munroe Bergdorf and I realise how very glad I am that I've never aspired to be anything at all like MB appears to be.

I'm not sure that's what they mean, though.

Fuck all as they are men!

Sounds like they have problems with the definitions of the words 'real' and 'woman' from that.

Art which has no basis in reality is often a bit crap imo.

The experience of transwmen provides a very clear and valuable insight:

That the power differentials between women and men are due to misogyny, because nothing changes for transwmen - the fact that they retain their male privilege is evident.

This is par for the course for bog standard publicly funded art. They hang it on a "progressive/social awareness" peg to justify their funding/relevancy and trans is flavour of the day.

They'll have conceived that exhibition specifically to virtue signal that they are openminded and accepting of these new male women that others seem to find challenging.

The art world likes to think of itself as boundary pushing and open minded but they basically buy their political opinions off the shelf.

It's going to be a car crash 🍿

Edited to add, someone should make an artwork/installation of GCSE biology textbooks or vol.1&2 of Under the Duvet of Darkness.

Or a 'not =/=' then a collage of you know who's.

Yip.

This could be a premse for some really good art, exploring how trans simply reinforces stereotypes and sex cannot be identified out of. Sadly pieces entered in that vein might not make the final cut, but I hope some GC artists think about entering.
