Labour candidate suspended for 'transphobia'

Labour’s London region has suspended the party’s candidate for a closely-contested council by-election in Hackney following allegations of “transphobia“.
Party members were told by email early this morning by Hackney’s borough organiser that “all planned campaign sessions” in the Cazenove ward had been cancelled, including those that were to have taken place today.
A Labour source has confirmed that the candidate, Laura Pascal (front right in photo), has been “administratively suspended”, which means a complaint has been made about her by another party member and a decision taken to investigate it.
The timing of the suspension means there is not enough time to nominate a different candidate in time for the by-election, which will be held next Thursday. This means that if Pascal wins, she will sit as an independent councillor. The source confirmed that Labour will do no further campaigning for her.

About time KS got a grip.

Another woman punished by the Labour party for stating a biological fact. What a surprise.

RebelliousCow · 13/01/2024 16:16

This is the reality of the Labour Party - no matter what the messaging from the front bench. Truly Orwellian. One Person with axe to grind can make a complaint - and then the Labour party machine immediately abandons that candidate. whoever made the complaint should make themself known and be expected to justify their actions. They've thrown in accusations of racism to make sure.

LoobiJee · 13/01/2024 16:21

The article quotes the Tweet. She doesn’t say anything about trans people. Or use the word woman. She just talks about biological sex.

My embodied reality as a member of the oppressed sex class is experienced in a world where biology has a significant impact. You can believe what you want but I believe that biological sex is a real thing and neither law or some kind of new scientific concensus wld change that.” In her X/Twitter profile she describes herself as “feminist”.

Helleofabore · 13/01/2024 16:23

So, has Laura posted something recently that has caused these complaints? Or is this an organised action similar to what is happening with Rosie and Tonia?

LoobiJee · 13/01/2024 16:23

Sorry I missed a bit.

In social media exchanges, Pascal has said: “trans women are not female. By definition they are male”.

Froodwithatowel · 13/01/2024 16:24

How long is KS going to look in the other direction and whistle?

According to the article.

“Pascal’s views about biological sex and gender identity were known well before she was selected as the Cazenove candidate and are expressed in a pinned post on X/Twitter, published on 30 July last year.

MidCenturyLangClegs · 13/01/2024 16:25

Poor Laura.

Laura, if you're reading this, I'll happily get my shovel out.

How dare the Labour Party break the law over and over again. Gender Critical beliefs are protected under the Equality Act 2010.
Keir Starmer, pull you head in, put your big boy's pants on and start to protect at least the 99% women in your Party who don't have a p3nis.

Boomboom22 · 13/01/2024 16:26

I hope she gets elected then stays independent when they have to back down and say well yes, tw are actually men and many recent legal cases have shown it is ok to acknowledge that reality.

Froodwithatowel · 13/01/2024 16:26

Would she and Rosie consider starting a socialist party that does socialism and sanity rather than identifies as doing it?

Whole lot of voters with nowhere to put an x, who'd really like to.

Yes. But the article also refers to her attacking male individuals amongst other things.

I am wondering though if she has done something very recently, or whether she is a new victim of the same organised attack Rosie and Tonia had seen.

I guess I am asking before I go and do a deep social media dive to find out. I can’t do that just yet as I am on my phone and need a larger screen to do it. So I am being lazy ☺️

RoyalCorgi · 13/01/2024 16:29

This is in breach of the Equality Act, surely?

I think that has happened in the Green Party too, with several people taking them to court over suspensions.

Abhannmor · 13/01/2024 16:32

If I was Sunak ....or whichever attack dog the Tories have hired this time ....I'd run very hard with stories like this. They have eff all to lose now. Just lead with 'loony lefty councils ' 24/7. Worked before.

BTW I swept Cazenove Rd in a previous life. Wonder what my old lesbian workmates make of it all?

If you follow the links in the article she tweet-quoted a tweet comparing womanface with blackface, which presumably is the racism she’s been accused of.

Floisme · 13/01/2024 16:35

I really, really hope I don't know the whole story yet - always possible - because, if it turns out that Labour have decided they would prefer to lose a by-election than field a candidate who recognises biological reality, well then the thread my vote has been hanging on might just have snapped.

Rightsraptor · 13/01/2024 16:36

Laura's spot on.

Thanks loobi! I wasn’t going to click on links in the article. But now I will.

Froodwithatowel · 13/01/2024 16:44

You'd have thought that the findings of Rachel's case this week might have given pause for thoughts. What with the discussion of when someone with an unreasonable axe to grind makes a complaint, those being complained to need to do a bit of critical thinking and investigation. And sometimes the answer is 'no'.

Particularly considering the costs coming down the track for discriminating and harassing people in this way.

swallowedAfly · 13/01/2024 16:44

can she run as an independent without incurring entry costs or whatever they’re called now?

Not sure how gentrified Hackney is now. Hopefully not so middle class they’ve swallowed the kool aid.

I cannot vote labour and can’t vote Tory, Green or Lib Dem 🤷‍♀️

Helleofabore · 13/01/2024 16:38

I’m not on Twitter but I could scroll through her feed which (what I was able to see at least) was entirely photos of her doorstep campaigning going back seven years. It wouldn’t let me look at the Twitter feed of the David Duffield person who has been posting “don’t vote for her” and accusing Labour of transphobia on Twitter.

EasternStandard · 13/01/2024 16:48

More of the same from Labour

Januarydontbecool · 13/01/2024 16:51

Presumably the voting papers have already been printed. If so, they will say she is the Labour candidate.

Unless Labour continues campaigning, but not for her (how?), many of the voters who would normally vote Labour will be guided by the voting paper and vote for her.

EasternStandard · 13/01/2024 16:55

RoyalCorgi · 13/01/2024 16:29

I can’t see why she wouldn’t have a case

EdithStourton · 13/01/2024 16:57

Fucking hell.

I feel like putting up an advert:
ONE VOTE AVAILABLE
Are you honest? Do you believe in ideals of representative democracy (that is, you won't trample over the views and beliefs of the majority)? Do have a social conscience?

And finally... (tricky, this one...) Do you - deep breath - know what a woman is?

Currently there isn't a party I can vote for. As not as though I'm making a mad series of unreasonable demands.
