Knife crime against women and girls doubles as campaigners warn not enough is being done to tackle crisis

New figures obtained by The Independent show the number of women who were killed, injured or threatened by a knife soared from 6,000 in 2018 to more than 13,700 in 2022 – laying bare the scale of the crisis. The offences include ones relating to robbery, rape, homicide, public order and theft.

Campaigners say the statistics, which cover the last available full year of 2022, show the country needs to tackle the crisis, particularly when it relates to domestic violence, with Labour MP Jess Phillips warning: “Things are getting progressively worse.”

Nick Gazzard, whose 20-year-old daughter Hollie died after being stabbed 14 times by her violent ex-boyfriend in 2014, said: “If this was terrorism, there would be a national outcry.”

It's a real shame Sadiq Khan got rid of Joan Smith from the London VAWG board because she researched a link between terrorism and DV. So taking violence (including knife crime) against women more seriously could have the knock on effect of tackling terrorism as well.

I was going to mention Sadiq Khan too...

As 'woman' and 'womenhood' are degraded more and more that number will just keep going up.
Porn is also part of the problem.
Women are just not listened to.

Worse, it's seen as legitimate to abuse and attack 'Karens' and absolutely yes, bring back Joan Smith.

IwantToRetire · 08/01/2024 18:53

I think also the increased use of knives in gang related crime is also part of it.

Men and young boys who years ago wouldn't have had such a weapon now see it as commonplace.

And as we all know violence against women has always existed. Now men have one more form of violence to intimidate, threaten and kill women.

As with guns, knives themselves aren't the problem.

The problem is male violence.

The knowledge that so many boys and men carry knives definitely leads more boys and men to carry knives out of fear. And a significant proportion of men worldwide see women as lesser humans and therefore that it's ok to enact their fucked up feelings on our bodies. So taking knives out of circulation would be great and all, but I really wish men would sort themselves out too.

ArabellaScott · 09/01/2024 12:19

Yes, Joan Smith is a huge loss.

I really wish men would sort themselves out too.

Absolutely.

Saw on the news that Idris Elba has started a campaign against knive crime, but it is the usual mantra, just mourning the death of young people. Obviously this is horrible, but making it an issue just about young people detaches it from the real issue.

Male violence.

It's wretched and a growing problem within the recognised public health issue of VAWG.

But VAWG and knife crime is so different from that involving men that it's chronically overshadowed.
