GC in NZ

I am a British woman who works in a professional role in NZ. I am left wing, hard left some would say, and gender critical. I never used to be, but in the last couple of year have done a complete 180.

I feel like I'm going mad. All of my friends and colleagues accept this ideology uncritically. I am living in anticipation of the day when I will have to come clean. I just don't get it. It seems so obvious to me now what bullshit the ideology is. In the UK I follow so many strong GC women but in NZ it just seems like "be kind" is the mantra.

They’ll get it. Try graffiti on toilet walls

nameychangerrrrrr · 08/01/2024 00:44

I'm honestly not sure they will! A conversation seems to have opened up but not to the extent it has in the UK.

Family & friends of mine in NZ are too worn out/overwhelmed/pissed off by other things going on there to be particularly vocal about this too.

Rightsraptor · 08/01/2024 04:11

Haven't you recently had a change of government in NZ that seemed promising? I'd thought they seemed more balanced and rational, nor believing in the gender fairy etc, that the last lot.

Maybe it takes time to filter down. Goodness knows it'll take years to undo the harms done by this ideology.

nippa · 08/01/2024 05:40

Kia ora, I’m GC in NZ, too! You’re right, the general view over here is be kind, but there are plenty of gender critical people around, if you know where to look: check out Ani O’Brien and Speak Up For Women on twitter, and you’ll soon find others. Ngā mihi.

NotBadConsidering · 08/01/2024 06:41

There is someone from NZ who posts regularly here whose username I’ve forgotten and there were some brilliant YouTube videos of women saying loud No to everything when the Laurel Hubbard fiasco was happening, but I’ve forgotten the name of the channel too. Sorry, I know that’s not much help! Someone will come along soon with the answers I’m sure.

But you’re not alone, is the point, and you’ll be surprised how many people actually agree with you.

everyonesacf · 08/01/2024 06:51

Yep, I'm in NZ and also GC. Trust me there are loads of us here! The tide is definitely turning.

nameychangerrrrrr · 08/01/2024 07:16

I really hope you’re all right. Just seems like such a fringe minority here still.

giadaros · 08/01/2024 07:22

Kia ora! We are around. I don't have much of a social circle here and I'm fairly rural but we are definitely here 🙋🏼‍♀️

literalviolence · 08/01/2024 07:38

Where does NZ stand generally in relation to women's rights? is it generally more regressive than the UK? is that why its got behind such a sexist, homophobic ideology more robustly?

PriOn1 · 08/01/2024 07:41

I think that feeling of isolation is deliberately induced. There’s been an intense and very public campaign to denigrate anyone who speaks out. It’s hard to overcome, but will be reversed eventually, even if it takes longer in some places than others.

No I don’t think it is. But there seems to be a large crowd of people who have accepted this ideology without any sort of debate. I almost feel like we are where the U.K. was 5 or so years ago.

I guess you're getting a men's right push back then and perhaps there are more of them population than you'd have like to think who don't care about the vulnerable. Sad times when you realise how much women are hated in your country.

jiggyjiggyjig · 08/01/2024 08:02

I was speaking to my relative just the other week. He is hard right and quite unreconstructed yet even he said how weird it is that in the UK we are GC where in NZ 'we just accept things more and are perhaps less judgmental' 😳😳😳
Ironic as he and other NZers I know are more judgemental and anti woke if you will than anyone else I know.

I think that weightlifter at the olympics is relevant. They were from NZ. So NZers supported them. I did point out that I question how NZ would have felt has their actual female weightlifter been beaten by a trans woman lifter from another country and whether the support was due to wanting 'their person' ti win (they didn't) and he couldn't really say.

This sounds weirdly specific but NZ is a small country. Their first real big news story about transgender was regarding a trans sports person they wanted to win. This seems to have set in course a pro trans rhetoric nation wide after all they could harder support the Olympian but then change their mind about other trans people. Cognitive dissonance

NZ women's rights are complicated. One of the first countries to give women the vote but shockingly bad with maternity leave.

5 years ago, the FWR board was despondent because self-id looked unstoppable. Hopefully movement is possible for NZ, too - sounds like there are a few green shoots to tend?

Eketahuna · 08/01/2024 09:43

Kia ora, another GC Kiwi here. We’re around… Laurel Hubbard was a wake up call for many, but our media is shockingly one-sided on this issue. Do you follow SUFW on social media?

Eketahuna · 08/01/2024 09:46

Can I ask, OP - you say you’ve done a complete 180 in recent years, what brought that about for you?

EasternStandard · 08/01/2024 17:30

The media is a problem

At least your gov has changed I guess and it might get some policy changes

Similar here concerns me but the opposite, half the media fighting it but post GE policy toast

The last few days posting have shown me many just don’t care. In fact actively embrace gender ideology

I can’t recall exactly what it was but I was always aware there was “another side “ I just assumed it was bigotry. But the voices on the left became more prominent and when I started to understand the issues it clicked. Bearing in mind I’m British and follow politics and news in the U.K. closely. I do follow SUFW but I think it will take a strong female voice on the left to galvanise others like me?

OP posts:
Eketahuna · 08/01/2024 19:03

I agree - we need a LW female politician to speak up, currently it’s only the RW men. Could be a long time coming, since Labour and the Greens do not tolerate dissenting opinions (I’m an alienated lefty myself).

FizzyLemons · 08/01/2024 19:12

I'm in NZ and the majority of people I've discussed it with are GC, whether they would use that term or not. I've been broaching the subject with more friends recently and none have bought into GI. I would say that most don't know how far NZ is down the track though. I'm quite well read on the subject but I didn't know the Harold the Giraffe (our travelling primary school 'health and relationships' advisor :) ) was telling year 5 & 6 kids about trans issues. Apparently that has been stopped by our new government but how did we not know it was happening?

My son's 'be kind' GF said yesterday that she thinks all this gender stuff will be over soon as the young people are starting to realise and actually say that they think it's wrong. May be wishful thinking but at least they're talking.

nameychangerrrrrr · 08/01/2024 20:11

Labour and the Greens are just a huge disappointment. I cringe when I hear some of the lines parroted.

OP posts:
GourmetLettuceMix · 08/01/2024 22:58

Kia ora! I agree that a lot of people are "be kind" and just don't realize the extent of the issue because other stuff is going on.

But, I am on several groups on FB, incl gardening and DIY groups, and people often poke fun at gender issues ie someone posts a pic of a weird vegetable and half the replies say it's non binary, things like that. I get the feeling people are increasingly questioning gender identities and are no longer scared of joking about it. That's not to say I've seen any bullying of any trans individuals, but people are less likely to take these ideas very seriously.

Sean Plunket on https://theplatform.kiwi/ has interviewed KJK a few times as well as others from her visit to NZ.

From posts here on FWR the situation in New Zealand does seem very difficult for anyone with GC / Sex based rights views.

But it was only during the Let Women Speak tour to New Zealand that it was bought home to some of us.

Not sure if you have the time OP, or if it is worth it, but you could look through the threads from that time as quite a few NZ groups were referenced.

Just a thought.

But in the meantime you have FWR to post your views and news. Not the same as IRL contact but who knows what you and others in NZ might start.
