What do you think about Prince Andrew?

theilltemperedclavecinist · 05/01/2024 12:04

Sexual exploitation of women and girls used to be saucy (think Carry On movies, the Playboy Mansion or seaside postcards) and no-one wanted to think about the power imbalance apart from hairy feminists.

Now we know that Epstein was a sex trafficker, the media and the public think that every man who met him must have known about it and is therefore equally vile.

It's not as though misogyny has gone away though. Daily Mail articles about teen pregnancy for example attract highly rated comments about those slutty girls.

Why the discrepancy? Everyone seems to suffer the same kind of magical thinking - that every individual has perfect knowledge and perfect autonomy. The hard-of-thinking celebrity who gropes a pretty girl (or worse) and thinks its all good clean consensual fun? Definitely a p@#£do.The devious fourteen year-old, plotting her way to a cushy life on benefits? Definitely couldn't be a victim. Always think the worst of everyone.

Not sorry for Andrew, except insofar as he's a careless wielder of unconscious privilege who probably still doesn't get what he did wrong. But frustrated by the portrayal of misogyny as a parade of pantomime villains rather than the everyday menace that women all know about.

@ZenNudist you do know Scotland is part of Britain, don't you?

Exactly

Atethehalloweenchocs · 05/01/2024 13:39

But you can get to fuck with exiling him to Scotland Zen. We don’t want him and last I looked we are British too.

I did think that suggestions was a bit hard on the Scots!

FizzingAda · 05/01/2024 13:43

Exile him to Scotland??? Excuse me, we don't want him. In fact most of us don't want any of them 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. He's just the tip of the iceberg.

Theunamedcat · 05/01/2024 13:45

Look at all the other names where is the outcry over them is it as much as over him? Didn't Obama show up as going to the island and trump they had way more power and influence than randy Andy who is pretty insignificant TBH and he literally had people throwing himself at him he was stupid enough to believe in his "celebrity" status

I agree he is being used as a scapegoat but I would struggle to find sympathy for him the royal family really need to change hopefully will and kates era will be better with the children being raised better following some of Diana's examples

pickledandpuzzled · 05/01/2024 13:45

I agree. He acted entirely in accordance with his job- be a high profile, dashing playboy figure. He won’t have wondered why or how the girls were there- he was surrounded by facilitators and ornaments at every turn. That was what life looked like- a bit James Bond.

I question whether he was allowed near anything sensitive, as a representative. His job was to stand and smile and talk Polo looking dashing. I’m sure aids did anything significant.

He’s been stripped of pretty much everything possible from what I can tell.

The work of keeping such people contained will never end. At least it’s no longer acceptable.

Well you would be tougher on the wee shite but it might be too late for him to learn a lesson or two

beguilingeyes · 05/01/2024 13:48

It still boils my piss that the only person who's been jailed from this is a woman. Why am I not surprised...?

cerisepanther73 · 05/01/2024 13:51

@theilltemperedclavecinist

How 🤔 predictable 🙄 boring to say that Grown up women in Carry on films were sexually exploited,
another words you are making out that they were niave or stupid females ?

How is it that 🤔 that sea side post cards are offensive and that they sexually exploitive in any way?
🥱 big yawn -a thon -time -again

I am wondering is it fashionable or something to be easily offended by things nowadays,!?

everything is something to be triggered or easily selectively offended about these days,

I have a theory about easily offended about allmost anything and everything people ones

Is that it could be a way to fill an emotional dissatisfied in life in general type of feeling,

I am female and from what is classed as an ethnic background in western society and i am not easily offended by allmost everything i see or hear.

fedupandstuck · 05/01/2024 13:52

There's no evidence that Obama was involved, to date. There was a widespread photoshopped fake photo that purported to show the Obamas (Barrack, Michelle and the two children) on holiday on the infamous island, but it's conclusively faked.

Men exploit women (because they can) and women get the blame, unless there's proof incontrovertible of a male crime, in which case there's an outbreak of NAMALT.

I think it's a power differential thing-the only other instance I can think of is white versus black in the US.

@cerisepanther73 you might want to re read the op as you seem to be reading a different one to the rest of us.

No one has said they are offended ...unless they are Scottish 😬

cerisepanther73 · 05/01/2024 13:56

@theilltemperedclavecinist

I think 🤔 it's because i am grown up female and emotionally strong one at that,

who has experienced a lot of adverse very disvantaged experiences at a young age...
sort of experiences that could easily have made me want to turn to drugs and alcohol to numb the psychological and emotional traumas i went through...

I think he's been caught out by a change in our culture. I think he was always a sleaze and suspect a lot of Royal men of being similar in attitude. They expect that despite not being the best looking and neither pleasant nor intelligent they will attract women, they believe themselves to be 'the catch' and the women lucky.

I think it's disgusting behaviour for (as Andrew was at the time of the epstein/ guiffre business) a family man of 40 something in a position of representing the UK. Apparently a thick, libidinous, unattractive, overprivileged man in what was considered worthy of representing our interests abroad.

He was a bloodsucker getting to leach expenses paid jaunts overseas on the taxpayer's dime.

He's never done anything worthwhile in his whole life.

I think they should exile him to Scotland and no longer inflict him on the British public ever.

What did we do to deserve him, @ZenNudist! And Scotland still is part of Britain, despite the SNP’s best efforts.

AnnaMagnani · 05/01/2024 14:00

My impression is it's hard to work out who is involved and who isn't.

Epstein ingratiated himself with so many rich or influential men.

Some will genuinely have just gone to a conference. Some will have enjoyed a free flight on his private jet or week on the private island sunbathing.

And some will have been there just for the sex.

Unfortunately there are so many it is easy for them all to claim they were just there for a tech conference.

He was jailed too but he is dead so last woman standing takes the fall

theilltemperedclavecinist · 05/01/2024 14:03

@cerisepanther73

I was trying to convey an ambience rather than express disapproval as such. On the topic of seaside postcards, though, I do recall one, the 'joke' of which was that a man would deliberately run out of petrol so that he could 'break down' in a remote location with his female companion. Is that funny?

People also joked about vicars and choirboys. Funny?

Agree with the change in culture aspect. Years ago no one really batted an eyelid when Bill Wyman was with a 13 year old Mandy Smith. Underage groupies as they were known hung around pop stars.

I think PA is arrogant, pompous and privileged. I also think he probably had no idea the girls were trafficked such that the bubble he lived in. He most likely thought they all wanted to be there?

Still an appallingly lack of judgement regardless.

In jail but not jailed like she is. He was never convicted. He could have ended up free. His death, like PA being made a scapegoat, just makes you wonder who and what is being hidden. Plus his death was very suspicious imo.

Epstein hanged himself in his cell at the Metropolitan correctional center in Manhattan in August 2019, while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges.

CurlewKate · 05/01/2024 14:12

I find the fact that the RF are continuing to support him, and people are continuing to revere the ex Queen despite that profoundly depressing.

I had hoped that Charles would hang him out to dry and be accountable but it looks as if they are still supporting him. Even wheeled out Sarah Ferguson to try to ‘clean up’ his image!.

LakeTiticaca · 05/01/2024 14:19

Whether or not he's innocent of the accusations, he is arrogant, pompous and tone deaf. Many who have crossed paths with him have voiced these opinions

He is walking on very thin ice now his mother has gone, I think Charles needs to toughen his stance and banish him to a small cottage somewhere remote

Slightly off topic, but can you imagine what Emily Matlis was feeling like in ‘that’ interview?! She hardly had to ask anything, just give him enough rope to hang himself. And he just kept going. You would have thought he’d have an advisor or someone to walk on set and call a halt to it.
