Singer of the Runaways speaks out against surgical transition of young people

Good to see Cherie Currie, singer of the Runaways (Joan Jett etc) speaking out strongly on X/Twitter against surgical transition of young people. Alongside a publicity pic of herself from the 70s, she writes:

'Misgender this! A few years before this pic I was so into Bowie I wanted to BE HIM. Dressed like him, swung like him. I was CONFUSED about my ‘gender’. It was a PHASE. Today, it would be male hormones, cut off my breasts, destroy my life. Love them enough to WAIT. Please.'

She also comments on the difference between 70s pop gender nonconformity and today's surgical transitioning:

'That’s what made it magical. Now it’s a horror show.'

Good on her.

DustyLee123 · 03/01/2024 10:29

Good. Many teens go phases, our parents let it run, they didn’t rush to doctors/surgeons.

ArabellaScott · 03/01/2024 10:42

Good for her.

A small part of me is waiting patiently for St Joan to chime in.

She doesn't give a damn about her reputation. Oh, no.

I believe the rush for trans surgery peaked during global lockdowns and is now coming down rapidly. Basing this on anecdotal evidence only as private clinics do not (shamefully) seem to share stats or track medium to long term outcomes. But so much anecdotal evidence has been emerging over the past few years of the adverse long term effects of exogenous hormone treatments and top and bottom surgery (especially phalloplasty) that I think many prospective patients are thinking again. Lots of chat to this effect on the relevant reddit subs and tik tok. Young people saying they prefer to 'wait until surgical techniques improve' and then shortly after realising that they are NB rather than full trans.

I'm glad about this as these surgeries do not have a defined protocol and there seems to be very little sharing of knowledge, technique or outcome tracking. But I feel there is a big class action lawsuit to come in the US by people who have been damaged by surgeries.

I think it's dreadful that young people in mental distress were (it seems) encouraged to have these surgeries. Great news if numbers have indeed peaked but HCPs should not have been advertising them in the first place.

So great to see her speaking out on this; the more the better and she has kept this nice and clear.

ArabellaScott · 03/01/2024 10:56

She's based.

Someone says how glad they are to see her speak out:

'No choice Hackney. To sit ideally by would make me complicit in the worst horrors of our lifetime.'

Yes. Let 2024 be the year we all stand up for our children, to protect our gender non conforming children, and let them know they don't need to do anything to their healthy bodies to try and fix some abstract, arbitrary idea of 'gender'.

Abhannmor · 03/01/2024 11:43

Good to see this. Hope she doesn't get mobbed. But it backfired when they came for Alice Cooper. He's semi retired anyway though?

Abhannmor · 03/01/2024 11:46

Ps ....and minted

IcakethereforeIam · 03/01/2024 11:46

Good for her. Especially as a woman sticking her head above the parapet. Shame on the ones who know better but stay silent.

The TRA mob never puts as much effort into cancelling men as they do women.

If they did then Dave Chapelle wouldn't still be making £££££ from Netflix.

Rightsraptor · 03/01/2024 11:56

I've never heard of her but she's clearly not a 'young thing' any longer if she's talking about herself in the 70s - so a bit younger than me.

And that's key, surely. She's beyond the age to give a shit. The bulk of her musical career is behind her, so what fear of being cancelled? Probably zero.

Well done, Cherie. Don't ever apologise for it.

Please take pity on me and explain what based means - I've seen it everywhere and am baffled! In context, it's a positive thing but I've no idea what the origin is!

Waitwhat23 · 03/01/2024 12:19

And also, good for her. Her post was clear and unambiguous. Hopefully courage will call to courage.

RainWithSunnySpells · 03/01/2024 12:20

I read it as short for based in reality a sort of modern alternative for the saying of 'having your feet on the ground.'

ETA. This is a reply to Waitwhat23's question RE 'based.'

Great statement. The old repeats of TOTP on BBC4 are a great advert for expressing yourself with clothes and make up, which could change from week to week. The pop stars generally seemed to be having enormous fun in the old days too. Right Said Fred looked like they'd just wandered out of a gay sex dungeon and been given the bemusing news that their novelty song had got to number one...

Would Aerosmith's 'Dude (looks like a lady)' be released today?

Talking of Vince Neil and the gender bending hair metal scene...

Except Glinner? I think he was punished for peaking too soon. Like those 'premature anti fascists' pre WW2.

Brewdug · 04/01/2024 08:49

Was interested to see this on Twitter as she replied to someone giving her grief by stating outright that Joan Jett does not support child transition. Not something you want to get dragged into if you're not ready.

FrancescaContini · 04/01/2024 08:59

Good for her but I guess she’ll be “cancelled” now for being a “fascist bigot”.

Beowulfa · 04/01/2024 09:18

Thanks for the lovely picture of Axl when he was so pretty; a reminder of the many posters of hot rockstar males with beautiful flowing locks I had in my bedroom. I heard a music reviewer describe the arrival of Nirvana on the scene as suddenly making Guns N' Roses et al look like a bunch of gay pirates. Harsh but fair.

I'd imagine so, Steve Tyler's an "anti-woke" Republican gun nut, who thinks that Donald Trump is dangerously liberal and a closet commie.

Yes, the list for gender NC musicians is endless. Musicians are misfits as a breed and so many celebrated artists would be labelling themselves as trans if they came of age these days.

There was a shock factor to just be man or a woman dressing unconventionally. Now people want to 'diagnose' their weird.

Well done to the amazing Cherie Currie.

Waitwhat23 · 04/01/2024 18:37

Cherie is taking absolutely no shit from TRA's on Twitter - she must be replying to every comment. It's glorious to see.

Delphinium20 · 04/01/2024 19:02

I was really into Duran Duran as a young teen and read all the fan mags, including when Nick Rhodes married his wife and they wore matching purple eyeshadow for the wedding. I ran out and bought a 3-shadow pack and sported purple shadow above and below my eyebrows for a good few months.

I thought Nick was so cool.
