Bit of a nothing sandwich in so much as no concrete proposals but good to see it being talked about and the recognition that the reason it was permitted is now obsolete

Gender self-identification ‘loophole’ could be closed

It goes back years, but it really needs reassessing.

If its a means to 'live as the opposite sex' to help with the GRC application, the process needs to be justified and a time limit put in place. Ive heard men say they have had a female passport years with no intention of getting a grc.

The public need to be made away that a passport isn't proof of sex whatever happens.

D Hayton is one such man. His wife won't agree to their marriage being redefined as "same sex" so he compromises by all documentation being updated except his birth certificate.

Your passport shouldn't have an incorrect sex on it.

A marriage can be annulled if one partner is transitioning to another gender. The gov website then links to obtaining a GRC. I dont know if the annulment is only allowed if an application for a grc is made? If thats the case, the ability to obtain strong government issued id indefinitely, may trap religious women in marriages.

Men with female passports can use the trans helpline for DBS checks, as well as anything a passport is used for id. TRA are correct when they say getting a GRC is pointless bureaucracy, one of the few things that cannot be changed without a GRC is id with HMRC, most others can be.

It really is a loophole, even if its being going on for years.

What I always wonder about this is what happens if someone turns up at passport control who is clearly one sex and their passport says they’re the other. Do the officials question whether they have the correct passport or whether it’s a forgery or does the sex marker just not count for anything so doesn’t need to be there in the first place?

You don’t even need a doctor’s note if you use the ‘crossdresser’ option!

It will be interesting to see the discussion but I suspect nothing will happen.

I don't understand why the rest of us should accept self-ID. If my 12 year old self-identified as 18 to buy alcohol, he'd be told to naff off by the shop keeper. But if an individual self-IDs, why do we all have to go along with it? It needs re-assessing.

A good analogy.
