It's an immature response that belies an immature understanding of the issues at hand.

We deserve more from our MP's than these sorts of comments on social media where they ignore their constituents in favour of random likes on X.

NoMoreFalafelsForYou · 31/12/2023 20:34

Exactly
I'm not the one saying she's not acting her age, or "can't believe she's 57!"
Like there's a way you're supposed to act when you're in your 50s.
🙄

TWETMIRF · 31/12/2023 20:38

I'm a councillor and there are people in my parish who I feel are utter scum. If they came to me for help as a councillor then I would absolutely help them just the same as I would anyone else. I am elected for everyone, not just the people I like. I certainly wouldn't post online that I only listen to a proportion of people, it's a breach of the Nolan principles and I could be disciplined for it.

She's surely got to be in breach of a number of parliamentary rules for her actions

I did wonder that.

So she has no care to represent a large proportion of her constituency. Sad that I'm not surprised

Well you're supposed to act like you're older than 12.

Can't believe she's 57
Yes, must be all proper in your 50s.
Goodness.

I was surprised that she's in her 50s. I think public representatives should behave with dignity, and they should take care not to alienate the people they're paid to represent. Indulging in childish name-calling is not 'proper'. But when it comes to people who were elected very young, and have had very little life experience, it makes it a bit more understandable, though still not right. I, too, thought she was much younger.

ArabellaScott · 31/12/2023 21:34

It is childish and unbecoming of an MP, yes.

I find it more worrying that a member of the WESC thinks its appropriate to use a term that is most often used as a slur, and is hugely divisive and "othering', especially given the very tense situation surrounding the very issues she is paid to discuss in Parliament.

Imagine if an MP in that committee used the T word that is also a slur, often 'reclaimed' by trans people but certainly not one that is acceptable for others to use. (And not one I've ever used, fwiw).

She should not be sitting on the WESC. It's untenable.

  • sorry, I also meant to say, she is actively saying she refuses to listen to the views of gc women. That is discrimination, given her position, surely?

Jeez, I dunno but my response would have been something like "OK Love, give it your best shot".

Like an adult. HTH. Hence why I commented on how juvenile her behaviour was.

Women and Equalities Committee
Strategy Statement

The Women and Equalities Committee makes sure that Government is fulfilling its duty to reduce discrimination and create a more inclusive society, including through the Equality Act 2010 and cross-Government activity on equalities. It also looks at the work of the Government Equalities Office, the Equality and Human Rights Commission and the Social Mobility Commission.

High-level objectives:
In our work, we are guided by four aims:

Hold to account the Government, government bodies and other key stakeholders on their action to reduce inequalities.

Listen and engage with those with protected characteristics about the inequalities they face. Making their voices central to our work by championing their needs and influencing improvement in their lives.

Provide analysis of equalities by using the information we gather, facilitating discussion, advancing effective recommendations, and increasing the availability/accessibility of useful information on equalities in the public domain.

Build public confidence in Parliamentary scrutiny on equalities by providing leadership on the equalities and inclusion agenda.

Inclusive
creating a space for a diverse range of contributions

Compassionate
listening and responding to people’s experiences of inequalities

Collaborative
bringing together our collective capabilities and knowledge within our cross-party membership

Influential
being accountable for how we seek to deliver critical thinking on equalities issues, and contribute to public understanding and public engagement

Transparent
visibly using the best available evidence

Let's hope enough voters make it their NY resolution to vote that waste of space out of office.

Thanks floisme

So it’s several paras on how Labour are going to make it easier for men to get a certificate which says they are female but will be more canny and tactical in how they approach that goal than the SNP were. And then this:

Moreover, let me be clear: we are proud of the Equality Act and will oppose any Conservative attempt to undermine it. We will protect and uphold it in government, including both its protected characteristics and its provision for single-sex exemptions.
^^
We need to recognise that sex and gender are different – as the Equality Act does. We will make sure that nothing in our modernised gender recognition process would override the single-sex exemptions in the Equality Act. Put simply, this means that there will always be places where it is reasonable for biological women only to have access. Labour will defend those spaces, providing legal clarity for the providers of single-sex services.”

Coming back to this point about the Labour party’s position.

I note that the article is carefully worded.

Moreover, let me be clear: we are proud of the Equality Act and will oppose any Conservative attempt to undermine it.”

It’s only attempts to undermine the Equality Act put forward by the Conservative UK Government that Labour will oppose. Not any attempt to undermine the Equality Act. I suppose their commitment to opposing the undermining of the Equality Act has to be very narrowly defined - given that in 2022 they supported the SNP’s attempt to undermine it via the Scottish GRA bill.

A slightly different point but your post has made me think of it

The biggest amendment that could help us is changing the definition of sex to biological sex.

Labour - “Moreover, let me be clear: we are proud of the Equality Act and will oppose any Conservative attempt to undermine it.”

They will oppose this and defend the act

Weasel wording spin mean many on here think Labour have ‘changed’. They haven’t they will make the GRC easier and oppose any move to pretty much the only solution we have.

Good spot LoobiJee, I hadn't seen that. Yes I'm very wary of slippery phrasing, especially after the way Anneliese Dodds repeated part of that article pretty much word for word in the House of Commons. She even repeated 'Let me be clear'!

Can you remember when she repeated it, floisme? I’d like to read the Hansard record of the precise words she used.

Floisme · 01/01/2024 09:49

It was in the debate with Kemi Badenoch a couple of weeks ago. I couldn't access Hansard at the time so I read it on 'They Work for You' instead. I'll see if I kept the link, hang in

MandyMotherOfBrian · 01/01/2024 10:01

The same Kate Osborne that a group of Labour women pleaded to not be allowed to stand as an MP after she shared an image of Theresa May with a gun to her head (during the first GE following Jo Cox’s murder)? At a time when women, and particularly in politics, were suffering unprecedented levels of abuse via social media. She isn’t fit for office for all kinds of reasons, and no, she should not be sitting on the WESC.

Was it the 6th December session on gender recognition?

I’ve put KB and Hansard into Google and that seems the likeliest one in December.

Edited to add: I’ve found it.

Let me be clear: Labour wants to modernise the Gender Recognition Act while making sure that that does not override the single-sex exemptions in the Equality Act. We recognise that sex and gender are different, as the Equality Act does, but I am afraid the Minister’s statement only underlines how chaotic her Government’s approach has become, with the Conservatives apparently completely divided on these issues and focused on rhetoric rather than delivery. LGBT+ people deserve better.”

1.47pm in the debate

Floisme · 01/01/2024 10:07

Here's the link to the whole debate on 'They Work for You' - not the official Hansard but I normally find it pretty reliable. Scroll down for Dodds' speech.

It was the repetition of 'Let me be clear' that tickled me the most, although it's not funny really because you I don't think you'd parrot a phrase like that unless you needed to stick to a script because you weren't on top of your brief.

Thanks floisme, I started reading the Hansard but your link is better as that website has the MPs’ photos, which makes it easier to keep track of the exchanges.

BobBobBobbing · 01/01/2024 10:23

Thanks for sharing this- we are in her constituency and that'll be 2 less votes for her from this left wing house.

Ties in with the attitude from the Labour canvassers in the local elections. My vote was genuinely up for grabs with this as my key issue. The labour canvasser literally backed down the front path when I said I had concerns about Labour's position on single sex services. The green canvasser had a thoughtful and nuanced discussion, including that biological sex was important and different to gender. And talked about how he advocates within the party to this effect. The greens got our votes (despite their national position) and won.
