I'm not really interested in whether it's hate speech to be honest. But I'm interested that a Labour representative on the Women and Equalities Select Committee appears to be comfortable using a term that's abusive of women who want to retain single sex spaces - a policy her own party is meant to support.

The devil is in the detail though, isn't it?

I suspect they are using a different definition of "single sex" to the rest of us.

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 31/12/2023 18:11

I think the same, Margot. Osbourne's attitude is strongly indicative of what lies behind Labour recent weasel words.

NoMoreFalafelsForYou · 31/12/2023 18:11

Does she not realise that just about everyone and their mother is a "TERF"?
🙄 No, not everyone is. Speak for yourself.

EasternStandard · 31/12/2023 18:13

And people are keen for Labour

Floisme · 31/12/2023 18:18

Yes that well might be correct Margot but, if they want voters like me to believe them - which I assume they do - then as an absolute minimum, the leadership need to get a grip. Because saying nothing while your backbenchers openly tweet their contempt for what's supposed to be party policy is a dreadful look.

FrancescaContini · 31/12/2023 18:19

Really obnoxious of her to give the middle finger to Sharron. How old is she - 14?

I don't have to.

Just about every poll that has been done on this issue says the same thing.

Can you show me where Labour have said they will protect single-sex female-only spaces?

I thought they’d only ever mentioned women needing “safe spaces”, in a tricksy sleight of hand.

FrancescaContini · 31/12/2023 18:42

I’ve just had a quick google of Kate. Apparently she’s 57! And has two children! So she must know better than to flick the V sign.

I read that she’s just said on Twatter: “Politicians have got to realise that their language has consequences.” I wonder how she squares this with using TERF?

PronounssheRa · 31/12/2023 18:47

To be fair it's Linda Riley flicking the V, Kate is sitting next to her grinning like a fool.

But, 57 and acting like your involved in student politics 🙄

So Isla Bryson should be in the female estate then?

As long as you are prepared to own it, then crack on.

*Can you show me where Labour have said they will protect single-sex female-only spaces?

Anneliese Dodds has twice said that Labour will protect the Equality Act
'and its provision for single-sex exemptions.'
Once in a Guardian article a few months ago and a second time in the House of Commons a couple of weeks ago (in a debate with Kemi Badenoch where she - AD - was quite spectacularly wooden).

Both times she repeated the phrase pretty much word for word. Whether that's because she wants to be precise or because this is lawyer approved wording that conceals another sleight of hand ... well I've not decided yet.

Well, I think I have... 😛

It's a bit like, when politicians say, "Let me be clear..."

Floisme · 31/12/2023 19:24

I may end up agreeing with you duc748 but they have until polling day to convince me otherwise. They won't be able to complain I didn't give them every possible chance.

duc748 · 31/12/2023 19:28

Likewise. I'm still (just) a Labour Party member. But I don't like or trust Starmer.

I take that to mean protecting the status quo. Ie what we have now. The EqA as it is and a situation where women lose out

Edited

Yep. The Act says it is legal to provide female only rape crisis groups but any organisation which wants to provide them will find itself targeted over allegations of transphobia and forced to include trans women or starved of funding and shut down.

LoobiJee · 31/12/2023 19:46

Thanks floisme

So it’s several paras on how Labour are going to make it easier for men to get a certificate which says they are female but will be more canny and tactical in how they approach that goal than the SNP were. And then this:

Moreover, let me be clear: we are proud of the Equality Act and will oppose any Conservative attempt to undermine it. We will protect and uphold it in government, including both its protected characteristics and its provision for single-sex exemptions.
^^
We need to recognise that sex and gender are different – as the Equality Act does. We will make sure that nothing in our modernised gender recognition process would override the single-sex exemptions in the Equality Act. Put simply, this means that there will always be places where it is reasonable for biological women only to have access. Labour will defend those spaces, providing legal clarity for the providers of single-sex services.”

Doublerainbow23 · 31/12/2023 19:48

Wow. How can someone who uses hate speech be an MP (leaving aside all the other ways I could criticise her)?

UtopiaPlanitia · 31/12/2023 20:01

Feck’s sake Osborne, act your age not your shoe size 🙄

ResisterRex · 31/12/2023 20:06

Can't believe she's 57.

Floisme · 31/12/2023 20:23

Yes I take it that way too - protect it as it is but do nothing to strengthen or clarify it. If I were in the Conservative Party, I'd be moving heaven and earth to get them moving on that commitment they made to clarifying that 'sex' in the EA means biological sex. I think that could really put some pressure on Labour.

NoMoreFalafelsForYou · 31/12/2023 20:25

Yes, must be all proper in your 50s.
Goodness.

What does "proper" as in "being all proper" mean here?
