USA Boxing to allow transgender women to fight born women

IwantToRetire · 30/12/2023 23:59

The amateur mainstay of the unpaid code in the sport set out guidelines each transgender boxer must follow to trade blows with a cis-gender.

So far, the move has been met with anger from some. Meanwhile, the transgender and broader LGBTQ community has welcomed it.

The complete list of rules can be read here https://www.worldboxingnews.net/2023/12/30/usa-boxing-transgender-boxing-policy/

I've used the link above as it is quite specific about age, testosterone, etc.. But for a more pacy read there is always the Daily Mail https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/boxing/article-12912389/USA-Boxing-transgender-women-compete-female-boxers-2024-policy.html

USA Boxing to allow transgender women to fight born women

USA Boxing set out its 'Transgender Policy' for 2024 with male-to-female transitioners to be able to compete against born women.

Good old daily Mail. I hope more people read it

Ffs! Women will be killed and/or badly injured. Insanity!

ZoomerDinosaur · 31/12/2023 00:12

The requirement for full reassignment surgery (though I notice this has been vaguely worded), together with the hormone requirements, will disqualify most transwomen from taking part. But not all of them.

The athlete, for a minimum of four years after surgery, has had quarterly hormone testing and presents USA Boxing documentation of hormone levels.

It honestly makes me rage when sports bodies bring up "acceptable" hormone levels as though this puts a transwoman on the same footing as a woman. They are spectacularly missing the most important advantage, which is that men have bigger bodies, more muscle and more inherent force behind their punches.

Codlingmoths · 31/12/2023 00:17

Totally unclear if just a boob job counts as reassignment surgery, but I’m also surprised at the ‘broad lgbt support’, aren’t they usually furious at conditions like surgery is required and a 4 year test period prior to being allowed to compete? Do any current boxers meet this (potentially, I guess they haven’t been regularly tested to prove it)

IwantToRetire · 31/12/2023 00:21

Let alone the time and money they are spending on this to placate a tiny minority of men at the expense of women.

Personally I dislike boxing, but if there are women who want to take part, why isn't the Association focusing on helping them and other wome get proper represenation and opportunity within the sport.

Yet again, what should be about women gaining equality is being hijacked by a few mediocre men, who want to cheat by competing against women.

Why cant everybody just get together and say no the the trans agenda.

Nothing wrong with having women who reject traditional feminity or men rejecting macho culture.

But for heavens sake just get on with it and stop expect the whole world to stop and re-arrange itself.

It's like everybody has totally lost perspective on reality.

I wonder how this will go over with boxing clubs and actual boxers? My so boxes, so I see a bit of that world, and I really can't picture it being accepted. Finding fights and sparring partners for women and girls can be tricky, and people go to some lengths to try and make it happen. You'll see men and women spar but the men are clearly holding back. Or fights where one woman is much more experienced and so holds back. No one has any illusions about the differences in male and female strength, or the need to be evenly matched for fairness.

Froodwithatowel · 31/12/2023 08:59

Men. They are men. The whole 'transgender women' wording is how this has been able to happen in the first place. Men are not women, and they have made very clear that any kind obfuscation to salve feelings will be used to physically harm and literally hurt women in this case, with flat out risk of killing one.

So no. Men. End of.

I don't think they will be satisfied until a woman is killed - and maybe not even then.

It might be that even the nutters recognise deep down that having a female killed or seriously injured) in a boxing ring would be bad publicity.

So I guess for them this policy upholds the principle that they "should" be able to compete but in reality the stringent conditions will likely prevent any actually doing so?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 31/12/2023 11:49

Men kill other men in the ring regularly. It's a dangerous sport and always has been.

I can't see any man, boxer or trainer, in my old gym ever being prepared to put a female boxer into such a position - they used to dish out summary justice to the men who were enjoying sparring with a female partner a little bit too much, never mind this deathmatch shit.

Hopefully, there will be a wholesale refusal - champions and titleholders saying 'Nah, I want to box, not be murdered in front of my family, thanks', as no amount of #bekindoryoureanevilterf could realistically persuade somebody that they stand a chance against a male opponent in the same weight class and with an added 'interest' over and above the usual desire to box.

Most of these female athletes rely on sponsorship to compete and won’t risk losing them by standing down for a single competition. They risk not being able to compete in future and losing funding.

Pretty sure that Carini was pressured into apologising (to the man who punched her) and why there wasn’t a more general outcry from all the female athletes.

Neither of the male boxers lost a single round in the entire comp, both won golds, pushing every other female down the rank, as well as subjecting them to hateful ridicule for not being ‘better boxers’.

….no doubt emboldened by the IOC stance, this absolute fantasy piece was written by a trans woman justifying their inclusion in the female category, void of any balance whatsoever and promoting the latest male athlete muscling in on the female disability category at the Paralympics.:

Grammarnut · 13/08/2024 11:11

Perhaps the transladies can box the gentlemen with XY chromosomes who have been AFAB, having a male DSD?

Retiredfromthere · 13/08/2024 11:31

Can I ask about insurance? I can't see insurers being happy. If boxing promoters cannot insure events what happens? Or are boxers not insured?

Retiredfromthere · 13/08/2024 11:34

'Re sponsorship. When it's a brand like Coca-Cola how are they affected by this bad press. If they sponsor a woman who gets maimed or killed or a 'woman' who maims or kills this is not a great look for their product!

duc748 · 13/08/2024 13:06

Carini's apology much like Roisin Murphy.

BrightDog · 13/08/2024 14:47

It was interesting that the Coca-Cola bottles that were present in every IOC press conference, were missing in Thomas Bach's last press conference. There was a lot of talk around sponsors and what they may or may not want to be associated with on 'X'.

Loads of solutions to how you might structure the female boxing category but the IOC are stuck on a self-ID ideology (don't want to test athletes but legal ID such as a passport is adequate), and weren't open to taking the same stance as World Athletics, Aquatics, Cycling etc (all of whom do not allow anyone who has gone through male puberty into the women's category).

Personally, I love boxing and martial arts, and have participated in both. All of the classes I've attended have been mixed sex, and the trainers always made it clear that if you were a woman training with a man (this happened for a number of reasons), then the guy was always expected to reduce his punch / kick power to whatever the woman could tolerate. Neither the men, nor the women had a problem with this. The woman was always in control.
I am very short, and non competitive (five ft one inch), but technically, I was very good. I remember being paired with a guy who was very short, very slight, and lacking technical ability, and he wiped the floor with me simply because he was a male, with all of the advantages that one gains from being XY.
It's impossible to describe how much more powerful a man is, compared to a woman, even if they have relatively similar physiologies. The guys I trained with were extremely respectful, and would have been mortified at the thought of going into a ring with a woman.
It's horrendous that the "female" Olympic boxers assumed that they were engaging in fair fights with their XX opponents. It might sound old fashioned, but "proper" combat sports are about honour and respect for yourself, your opponent, your club ) country, cand your sport. Where is the honour in XY fighters who gloated in their victories against XX opponents?

Only if they step into the ring with them.
If the get organised and refuse to fight them, it won't happen.

The hearing took place as the Biden Administration's Education Department is pushing to change Title IX to support the inclusion of trans athletes in women's sports ( from the Daily Mail article)

How could the Biden Administration be so stupid?

Your experience was always my experience with amateur martial arts. You respected your own ability, especially when fighting less experienced or smaller, lighter opponents.

However, when you fight competitively, respect goes out of the window and the only honour is in winning. This becomes a big problem for women fighting men.

I was competitive but no way could I beat a physically-matched male opponent.

Every man who takes to the ring knows he can - or, in the case of retired, could - beat a woman in a fight. And hurt her.
