Yousaf: We’d work with Labour on gender Bill before election

Humza Yousaf said the Scottish Government has been unsuccessful in working with the current Westminster Government, following the Section 35 order of the Scotland Act which prevented the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill from gaining royal assent.

But in a statement outlining Scottish ministers would not seek to appeal against a Court of Session decision which ruled the block was lawful, Social Justice Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville appealed to “future” UK Government’s to revive the laws.

“We’re willing to sit down with the Labour party – frankly now, let alone if they end up forming the next UK Government – to see if they have concerns about the Bill.“If they do, then let’s work together to try to mitigate any concerns that they do have.”

Alba’s MSP Ash Regan – a former SNP minister who quit the government over the legislation – wrote to Sir Keir last week urging him not to unblock the Bill.

I don't think Labour would be dumb enough to try and copy the failed SNP legislation. They saw how unpopular it was, in fact it arguably galvanised them into distancing themselves from self ID.

It doesn't mean I trust them, just that I think the next attack will come from a different direction and in a different form, e.g. possibly new hate crime legislation.

I will be amazed if the Labour manifesto makes anything clear and I expect it to be written in such a way that all sides will be able to read it as favourable to them if they so wish. But I'll bide my time and see exactly what it says.

Labour has already published thr basis of its manifesto.
https://labour.org.uk/missions/
"These five bold missions will form the backbone of Labour’s election manifesto and will drive forward a Labour government.”

Nothing about gender will be in thd manifesto.

If asked about "trans rights" (and that's a big "if") we'll get "It's not important to the electorate", "It never comes up on the doorstep", "It's a side issue", "It's right wing culture wars nonsense'.

It will be dismissed, the subject will be changed.

Yes and how dismissive is that

It’s messed up. The GRA was a bad idea and now look where we are, no answers for voting for our dds

I despair at all this. It’s so bad

I don’t think Corbyn’s refusal to be clear about his position on Brexit helped much in that election (although more to do with degree of losing than losing the chance of winning).

That’s still recent enough history to consider if rolling the dice with a lack of clarity again is a good move.

Don’t know enough about politics in Scotland (beyond this issue and the financial hoo-har that was in the headlines) to work out if it’s a clever chess move to try and force Starmer’s hand one way or the other. IIRC Labour was the biggest loser when the SNP gained a lot of ground, so could it be a strategy to ward off a Labour revival at the SNP’s expense in Scottish seats ?

”The manifesto will answer our questions on gender when it comes out.”

Oh bless you. If you genuinely believe that to be true then you’ll deserve the legislation that follows.

(I apply that equally to all the political parties).

Worth remembering that the other issue on the Tory back burner is the EA.

If which every office is working on this still hasn't finished by the time Labour gets in, there is every possibility that the ammendment to the EA could be the one the TRAs want which is that the word woman doesn't mean biological sex.

And the GRA could be tinkered with so that it effectively matches the GRR.

So then there wouldn't be any legal challenge as the Scottish GRR would then be compatible with UK wide law.

Leaving the door open for Wales and NI.

It was interesting to see how few Labour MSPs were in the debating hall, in Holyrood , when the announcement was made that the Scottish government were not going to appeal the GRC judgement a couple of weeks ago. Sturgeon also slipped out before the announcement. Scottish Labour could be distancing themselves, but we women up here aren’t in the mood to forgive & forget.

This.

And that this rich lobby has heavily paid these parties to do this .

They're in hock to the madness.

Madness. Mainstream media needs to push on this now and get labour to squirm. I really think if they don't come down on the side of reality soon labour could actually lose.

The mainstream media won't push it. Most are completely captured.

Have you read the thread about Naomi/Nathan O'Brien? And the BBC's response to those who complained about this male offender being referred to as "a woman" and "female"?
