It's depressing how often I think I can no longer be rendered speechless but it happens too often. Latest one:

“Not thought through” is to be blamed for so much…

Boiledbeetle · 24/12/2023 09:58

some people appear to have lost the ability to think at all about the consequences of their actions!

Fucking Muppets!

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 24/12/2023 10:05

The idea not having been properly thought through must be THE understatement of the year.

What, exactly, was there to think about? apart from children sending gifts to paedophiles being a spectacularly bad idea in anyone's terms?

Australia, WTF.

It’s not even just the not ‘thought through’ serious issue that some inmates are paedophiles. Why the fuck are children being used to boost the morale of criminals to begin with? Children are not validation tools for anybody Ffs. 🤦‍♀️

Yes children are not to be used as support persons for criminals.

I wish I could say I am boggled, but actually, no.

Peasand · 24/12/2023 10:16

I wonder who their third party provider is

Froodwithatowel · 24/12/2023 11:11

Anyone who needed to spend time 'thinking that through' is questionable in their capacity to be in any position of responsibility.

SamW98 · 24/12/2023 11:15

WTAF??? Seriously I’m with the OP being lost for words.

Just when you think this shit can’t get any worse, along comes another story from Oz or Canada where the authorities go ‘can’t someone think of the poor perverts’ - grim as fuck

WhereYouLeftIt · 24/12/2023 13:55

If I'm reading this right, secondary pupils made the gifts and cards and passed them to St Vincent Hospital for them to distribute - so I think that the kids thought they were making stuff for hospital patients. However, the Hospital also runs the medical services at the maximum security Port Phillip Prison. The prison bosses don't seem to have known about it, which makes me think some Hospital muppet thought it would be 'nice' for the prison patients to receive the gifts too and just went ahead and distributed them, and didn't stop to think what those prisoners might be in for.

It looks like the Hospital is at fault rather than the prison.

Pretty much.

Children make cards and presents for those in hospital.

Said hospital includes some prison inmates, some of whom were convicted of sexual offences against children.

Hospital staff are unaware of their patients convictions (as per the Telegraph article in the tweet).

Hospital staff distribute presents at random (as per Telegraph article).

So this isn't "children making presents for paedophiles", this is a prison officer not keeping a close enough eye on their charges in hospital.

Helleofabore · 24/12/2023 14:42

It is an issue who ever stuffed up. That is the fucking point!

Chariothorses · 24/12/2023 14:43

No idea why my post was deleted! Will try again when I've heard from mumsnet!

That makes sense.

I can't believe this, even of ultra-woke Australia. The tweet says the idea was not well thought through? Someone didn't think at all. Insane.

Igmum · 26/12/2023 08:27

Oh good God. I feel dirty just reading that. Those poor kids.

That message is even more lame than 'lessons will be learned.'

NitroNine · 26/12/2023 18:59

I mean 🤦‍♀️

”Don’t give the stuff from the kids to the nonces [or other convicts].” seems fairly obvious to me, really; & also as if it shouldn’t be that hard to achieve 🤨 not sending any of it into the prison should cover most bases; & I’m assuming that, should a prisoner become so unwell as to need treatment in a hospital they’d also have guards with them, so not including any patients with prison officers minding them should sort out the rest?

I’m guessing that what was probably a long-standing project is now likely to be shut down which is a shame for the people it made a difference to. Often friendships fall away when you’re disabled/chronically ill & have spent years going in & out of hospital (because you can’t do fun stuff, have no life outside medical stuff & hanging out in hospital loses its novelty value quickly) so to isolated people of any age contact like that can mean a lot. Especially to the elderly, I’ve noticed, who’ve been isolated by bereavement & mutual infirmities [as it were] - it’s that thing about being acknowledged as a human & having at least one card to put up to have a visible/tangible display of the fact other humans acknowledge their humanity & they are not as alone as a hospital Christmas can make you feel.
